does anyone know why illegal things are taboo on boards? is it limited to CM or do you run into this other places?

A lot of what we do is illegal in some states, even sex toys, so i'm not sure how they drew the line at the topics that they don't allow. Maybe a moderator can answer that.

There are also things (of an unmentionable nature) that are not illegal but are taboo on this board.

I've noticed that wording has a lot to do with what is allowed, and also context seems to have a lot to do with it.

anytime a privately owned and operated anything is used by others it is subject to the control, authority and whims of the owners. maybe the owners have no other reason other than it squicks the living bejeezus out of them for folks to discuss things that would put their livliehoods in jeopardy. to date, this slave knows of no announcement made to the participants here, WHO the owners are and WHAT their positions are save for the TOS.

this slave sees it as respect for the owners of the site that one would refrain from posting about subjects deemed by them inappropriate, regardless of the criminal implications.

well my last thread that was deleted, didnt have any unmentionable words, and everyone was pretty good at alluding without coming out forth right with it, but was still deleted. . .

i became frustrated because the CM community appeared to have an abundant interest in the matter and IMO that should result in being allowed.

maybe the matter is SOOO taboo the hate mail received in regards of allowing conversation on the matter is too unbearable.

The other message board I frequent has totally different restrictions. Like, quoting articles and citing sources. If you don't follow the guidelines, your post gets deleted.

I guess the restrictions HERE have to do with the sexual nature of the whole forum? I dunno.

i had a poll deleted a few weeks ago about drug of choice, which included nicotine, alcohol and illegal items. it was deleted for mention of items, even though in some states one of the items was not illegal

i wrote mod 11 back and asked if it was taboo because of its illegality, although after reading mercnbeths reply, i can see how feesable it is for me to not receive a reply on the matter

Yanno, though, given the conservative climate of our nation lately, I can't blame the mods/owners or whoever for being overly cautious, now that I think about it, lol

well mod 11 wrote me back but didnt answer my question. i wont push it since my "second thread removed for mentioning illegal activities" i am scared to write back a second time for fear she thinks i am trying to antagonize her. well, hopefully a Mod who knows how topics that are not allowed were chosen and enlightens us. right now i am going to go scower the guidelines

edit to add:
all i found was the "Subjects which are unacceptable regardless of circumstance include, but are not limited to - minors, bestiality, incest, necrophilia, snuff and criminal activities. Any other questions of acceptability will be determined based on the content of the given essay."

but did you know one lines replies are a no no too?

"One Liners - Please keep your one liners in the appropriate section (Polls and random stupidity or the lounge) Please do not bump threads with one liners that contribute nothing to the topic. This also includes emotes."

I'm a mod on a different forum with a topic related to a hobby of mine. The fact is I delete any post that advocates illegal activity. I don't want somebody pointing to a post on that forum advocating some illegal activity as to where they started doing whatever they're in trouble for. As a matter of fact repeat violators of that policy are the only ones I've ever had to ban. It almost seems like its some sort of mania to encourage others to do stupid illegal things.

With the subject matter of this forum it is a lot more complicated but if I was a mod here I'd leave the between consenting adults stuff alone, although a post telling a resident of Alabama how to smuggle in sex toys might get the axe, but still draw the line at discussions of drugs or copyright violation etc.

I know this is going to be met with a lot of "No way" but one thing to remember about CM. It's free! That being said, I don't remember ever having to send anything to those running the sight telling them exactly how old I am. Granted I am much older than many of you, BUT. . . .I'm sure there are many on here who are, dare I say it? Under eightteen.

GASP! NO! Say it isn't so!

There's not supposed to be anyone under eightteen on here! This is an adult sight! If there were anyone under eightteen then there might be someone trying to lure them into illegal activities! You know, those bad persons who prey on children! Bad pervert! Bad Pervert!

That said, I fully understand why CM won't allow certain topics and restricts discussion of those that may lead to certain threads which may open too many loopholes.

Plus, always remember and never forget what George Orwell taught us. For those who were born before "1984" you may get my meaning.

You have to look at it, sometimes, as what are the things that would get unwanted attention from law enforcement, and sometimes those things change over time.

Sometimes, it isn't even illegal activities, but anything that could be seen in hindsight as leading to some illegal activity.

And the limits about what can be discussed always has to be a judgement call on the mods, and from the owners, if for no other reason than what's illegal in one location, may not be in another. Age of consent is just one example. BDSM activities are another. And that's just in the US.

So it comes down to the "comfort level" of the owners, and their reps, the mods. You might disagree with their assessments, but, then again, you aren't likely the one to be on the receiving end of a court order one day.

As the owners, if you can show that you made a good faith effort to ensure that your members adhere to the TOS (and that the TOS forbids the topic that caused the court order), you have a much better chance of coming out of the legal system hide intact.

At the end of the day ... it's always a judgement call.

That's perhaps an understatement to a degree.

The current climate is: The FBI will show up at a hosting site, and places of business, and seize EVERYTHING.

Servers, PC's. Paper Records, whatever. Because they got paperwork to do it, being all the justification or explanation forthcoming. And you'll generally not argue with the armed federal agents.

At that point, you're out of business, and if perhaps the "recreational" site was piggybacking on a REAL server, then that business is out of business also. Paranoid yet? Good. That's the goal of the entire process.

If we can't discuss, say a topic lawful in one jurisdiction, but unlawful in another, then the topic of kicking in the Declaration of Independence to reboot the Federal government is never going to get discussed.

It's simply a matter of trying to keep your head down, so it doesn't, like the blade of grass standing tall, get cut down to size.

That's a horrible metaphor.

Look what happened to yahoo - the chat site was basically shut down because it was overrun by a particularly perverted proclavity that was illegal. i am glad they prohibit some of that stuff here on CM- i'd rather not read about all that stuff anyway - so much nicer things to talk about!!

While I am opposed to any form of censorship when it comes to speech, I believe the reason for banning certain "illegal" topics is just that...they are illegal in the majority of the US, and CM doesn't want to give the Gvt any excuse to scrutinise the site and those who use it.

Scrutiny isn't the issue. ALL internet traffic is copied to the Feds for storage, retrieval and later analysis if necessary. It's more about them not wanting to give the Government any excuse to take the servers and ruin their businesses.
