ATTORNEY'S ADVICE - NO CHARGE
Read this and make a copy for your files in case you need to refer to
It someday Maybe we should all take some of his advice! A corporate
Attorney sent the following out to the employees in his company

      1. Do not sign the back of your credit cards. Instead, put "PHOTO
ID REQUIRED."

2.. When you are writing checks to pay on your credit card
Accounts, DO NOT put the complete account number on the "For" line.
Instead, just put the last four numbers. The credit card company knows the rest
Of the number, and anyone who might be handling your check as it passes
Through all the check processing channels won't have access to it.

3.. Put your work phone # on your checks instead of your home
Phone. If you have a PO Box use that instead of your home address. If
you do not have a PO Box, use your work address.  Never have your SS# printed
on your checks. (DUH!) You can add it if it is necessary. But if you have
It printed, anyone can get it.
4.. Place the contents of your wallet on a photocopy machine.
Do both sides of each license, credit card, etc. You will know what you had
In your wallet and all of the account numbers and phone numbers to Call and
cancel. Keep the photocopy in a safe place. I also carry a Photocopy of
my passport when I travel either here or abroad. We've all heard horror
stories about fraud that's committed on us in stealing a Name, address, Social
Security number, credit cards.
Unfortunately, I, an attorney, have firsthand knowledge because my
Wallet was stolen last month. Within a week, the thieve(S) ordered an Expensive
monthly cell phone package, applied for a VISA credit card, had A credit
line approved to buy a Gateway computer, received a PIN number From DMV
to change my driving record information online, and more. But here's some
critical information to limit the damage in case this happens to you or
someone you know:
5.. We have been told we should cancel our credit cards
immediately. But the key is having the toll free numbers and your card
Numbers handy so you know whom to call. Keep those where you can find
them.
6.. File a police report immediately in the jurisdiction where
Your credit cards, etc., were stolen. This proves to credit Providers you
Were diligent, and this is a first step toward an Investigation (if there
ever is one).

But here's what is perhaps most important of all: (I never even thought
To do this.)
7.. Call the 3 national credit reporting organizations
Immediately to place a fraud alert on your name and also call the Social Security
Fraud line number. I had never heard of doing that until advised by a bank
That called to tell me an application for credit was made over The Internet
in my name. The alert means any company that checks your Credit knows your
information was stolen, and they have to contact you by Phone to
authorize new credit.
By the time I was advised to do this, almost two weeks after
The theft, all the damage had been done. There are records of all the Credit
checks initiated by the thieves' purchases, none of which I knew about
before placing the alert. Since then, no additional damage has been
done,  and the thieves threw my wallet away this weekend (someone turned it
in). It seems to have stopped them dead in their tracks.
Now, here are the numbers you always need to contact about your
wallet, etc., has been stolen:
       1.) Equifax: 800-525-6285
       2.) Experian (formerly TRW): 888-397-3742
       3.) Trans Union: 800-6807289
4.) Social Security Administration (fraud line):800-269-0271

Thank you
Ross

Interesting post. But- as it is some nit wit from new york became "me" in the 80s. I randomly change account #s - every so often.

When you call a call center- often such call goes to India, where US privacy law does not apply.
about 12 insiders were busted selling data to buddies...

There isnt too much you can do.

On the gas pumps- all one does is swipe card-at pump- no one checks it.  Gas up a bunch of "friends" SUVS= and bamm.

I get 4-8 calls from India a day- trying to sell me stuff. -Im too cheap to buy caller ID, so I usually let the machine get it.

ID theft, in itself could be unwise. The persons identity that gets compromised could have a warrant out for their arrest....[1out of 6 males, on probation, parole, ect. I forget???]

PaHunk, I get a lot of sales calls daily too and sometimes I like to have fun with them.
"What, you're selling vinyl siding?" "Jeesh buddy I have a Log House!"
"What? Replacement windows?" Damn! You should have called three months ago I just had them all replaced!"
"Life insurance? Sure, I'll take all you can give me!"
"How old are you?"
"92."
"You're selling Timeshares? " I've always wanted to go to Iceland!"

Unless you can name every thing you carry in your wallet (without looking) it's a good idea to photocopy the contents every 3-6 months.

If you need to report a possible identidy theft, the credit reporting companies have two levels - credit alert for 90 days where you are contacted at a designated phone number when any new queries come in, or a credit freeze which is a more stringent process.  Contacting one credit agency with a fraud alert "should" establish an alert for all three credit reporting agencies.

LOL, if I have time, or maybe I'm sitting here at the computer and I happen to get a sales call (we are on the no call list, so not too many anymore) But I will let them go on and on and just answer their questions ... until they have used up their time and thnk they have a sale and they say ... so can I sign you up fpr the mega-super-duper-deal?  and I pause and simply say ... "No, but thank you very much for your time, I was getting pretty lonely all by myself. Call again anytime."  and then I hang up  and picture the look on their face.

Good advice, some of which I'll not take though.

I've had a bit of a talk with  a moderator about mentioning illegal activities. I think this will be alright.

Nobody would steal my identity. My record is a mess and I am wanted, but it is far enough away and minor enough that it is not worth the trouble. Basically some fines, all misdemeanor, no felonies.

I did my damndest to get insurance but they just won't do it. Even Lloyd's of London has a vehicle accident disclusion in the blanket liability policy.

I have found a way to make my way though the world, which needs not be discussed, but here is another thing, I routinely send other people places with my credit card, and I want them to use it. Whether it is to fuel one of my vehicles, or get food, beer, whatever. These are people I trust with my life and they have never ripped me off.

More and more places are requiring picture ID to use a CC. While your advice is good, I wouldn't put "ID required" on the back. I am a bit different.

There are about nine credit cards in my wallet, all but two are expired. The new ones are still in the envelopes, in a safe. The new cards have not been activated so the numbers are no good, even if someone guessed the expiration date.

Also I am probably among the very few in the country who has no visa or mastercard logo on my bank card, for the checking account. It absolutley positively cannot be used even at POS without the PIN number. Not only can't you get money, you can't get ANYTHING without the PIN. My checks won't bounce.

So there would be problems with someone stealing my identity. Perhaps they can go to jail and pay those fines in "that" county. That would be cool as hell but I am not holding my breath.

But there is still an issue, to the OP, it is good to make people aware. Of course my situation is different, but what did you expect ?

My credit is probably about 740-760, and I am a never late. Was late once about 15 years ago, and schmoozed that off. Times were hard and I was late ONCE. And that was a long time ago. I still schmoozed it off. Business is business. My score would be higher but they lack current information because I have not applied for any new credit in a long time.

They changed your driving record ? How did they do that ? Do tell.

T

The USPO will not take any card that is unsigned or marked See ID, even if you've a passport with you.
I write my signature & add See ID with perm red marker covering the code on the back.

In the county I live in Michigan you do not have to list any phone number, you can state that it is unlisted & that is to be written by the clerk/cashier taking the check.

Keeping photocopies of vital info is always good.

Heh Termyn8or I do that with my credit card... wonder if there is the same reason behind it  .

Soooooo, you get a visit from the azzdude AND have to give up all your money? Sounds like a crappy deal to me. I would become a slave first, I think. At least I might have a little fun in the process.

ATTORNEY'S ADVICE - NO CHARGE
*snip*

Alternatively, consider that there is a world, and you are in it, and also there are other people, in it. And supposedly, you all "own" things.
Deduce.
