bob help me, but I am just not that bright.

Every once in a while I drift into the chat (it's the masochist in me) and it is often an endless barage of "hi" and "bye" and old chat buddies talking.

Okay, no problem, and am usually well-spoken enough to wedge into the conversation SOMEwhere.

But, I have limited capacity. On the rare occasions when an interesting topic DOES come up and everyone joins in with truly fascinating opinions, I just can't keep up, and totally lose the ability to follow along.

Will I ever get the hang of it?

I never have.

Might be a generational thing.

Or a lot of people do a good job of faking it.

If you are masochistic enough to keep at it.

I used to adore political chat. I would write my term papers and do research and be logged in for hours at a time so that when something interesting came up I could listen and contribute. I learned how to type extremely fast in chat. I became a crack researcher partially due to political chat, and I have about 200 people on my friend's list too. I have not done it for a long time. Basically I got bored with it... but when I first started chatting I had a hard time following the text. You might want to try voice chatting.

When I first struggled to keep up with a fast paced chat I taught myself to keep my eyes on the lower left corner & reading only from the nicks that were involved in the conversation. Once I was able to read each line it was a lot easier to respond to multiple conversations/chatters. Of course I ended up sacrificing grammar & punctuation

Like juliaoceania my typing speed sure picked up!

IMO- chat rooms are shallow and a time waster. Message boards- there is a chance of intelligent ond meaningfull conversation.

It helps to be a 10-finger "touch" typist where you don't have to look at the keyboard while you type. If you're a two-finger hunt & pecker

I'm sure it would be almost impossible to follow a fast-rolling chat.

I don't know if you can get the hang of it. I'm a fast typer and back in the day I could handle 15 different messages from different people at one time. However, that gets old.
Never been much into chat rooms persay.
I do love real time discussion groups no matter what the topic at hand is.
Perhaps that is what you should seek out? Or go to chat rooms that have few people in them until you get faster?

The only chat rooms i go to anymore are on my game site where there is chat along with every game. You just have to learn to type fast and learn the lingo. They do have a nice feature there where anyone on your "friend" list's chat shows up in red, so it's easy to have conversations with just them. There are usually 3 or 4 conversations going on at a time.

Ya know, come to think of it, I surf the profile, post on the boards, and SOMETIMES drop into chat.

And I tend to see VERY little cross-over from one group to another. Like we are all STILL so fractured, even though we are all on the same damn site looking for similar things!

Maybe it is just me, but I've never experienced nything like that unless the group is small and select. I'm not fond of chatrooms, but I suspect that it is more likely there would be a handful of people with truly fascinating opinions and the rest are just babbling idiots. So if I were in your shoes I'd block the idiots to improve the signal-to-noise, and that should slow it down enough to make it easy to follow.

I never did. I dont bother with chat roms becasue I can either read everyone elses replies, or i can type my own. I cannot keep up with a realtime flowing conversation and still type out what I have to say. In forums you can take your time and think out replies. In a conversation in a chat room, its like being in a bar with a huge group of friends, all shouting over one another to be heard. The ideas overlap and there really isnt much of a give and take, just people throwing out their own ideas since no one really has the time to read one anothers entries.

I will occasionaly venture into a very small chatroom, if I know the majority of the people there. The rooms I do go into, which arent on here, tend to be quiet until we have something to discuss, and then we keep it slow enough for a discussion.

Again, I owned a very busy chatroom for a few years. Yay. The trick, as someone has already spoken to, is to keep your eyes on the bottom portion of the chat window and both hands on the keyboard. There are two bumps on the keyboard, on the F and J keys. Those bumps are where you keep your two index fingers. Never look at the keyboard, always look at the bottom portion of the chat window while you type.

That is the only way you will keep up to a fast paced room.

hi and bye sometimes are big conversation killers, even with something interesting to say, or an interesting conversation to keep up with. I personally don't have the patience. especially now that I'm getting old and cranky.

I've asked about this a few times and never got much of an opinion from anyone. To me CM feels like 3 sections. The ads, the chatrooms & the forum. There is not much crossover I agree.
I see a lot of condescension towards those that use chat rooms here in the forums. In the chat rooms a lot have said that they won't post in the forums because of the flaming and bashing that goes on.
The ad ppl? I always think of them as window shoppers!

I don't know what to say ... I think perhaps some folk are missing out on good people. I know I have made one or two friends from going into chat (as best I can) and CERTAINLY have made friends here and on the profiles section!

Can't quite figure it out. But then again, I am having trouble converting any of this into any sort of meaningful relationship either ;)
