Use a tarp.  Seems you're not using the vehicle much, and if it's being left outside it's doubly worth the investment.

It'll take some creativity to tarp the thing effectively, to keep them from getting in, but you'll figure it out I'm sure.  Doubled with the red pepper suggestion, I think you'll have a winner (considering the tarp will keep your car safe from the pepper.)

Good luck!

Stephan

Get one of those fake owls and park him right up on top of the hood.

I just pictured that as a hood ornament hehe. Since Quivver just posted about moth balls I won't bother [;)] but that is what I use for mice.

Here in the UK we can get car shaped tarps with elasticated bottom edges, I used to use one when parked under a tree that deposited sap with the corrosive qualities of neat acid combined with an ability to set like concrete too. Perhaps your local autoparts store has something similar. http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/7401279.htm I know that right now the £40 asking price equates to nearly 80 bucks, a fairer comparison would be 8 hours at the legal minimum wage

I have had city and country squirrel problems some places I have lived.

I find that anything that helps mke life good for them including nut trees, fruit trees, or crops will attact them like a picnic attracts mosquitos.

One place a neighbor liked to watch them so put corn out... but my house was by a favored power line so they ate through my roof and cost me many thousands of $.

Have a heart live traps worked, most farm stores have them. But one must eaither transport them about 50 mi away or terminate them or they'll be back.

There are many tasty squirrel meat dishes.

Shooting them will keep numbers down a bit but more will come in as others disappear.

Some of them LIKE hot peppers, Some do not.

Moth balls is a good idea. Putting a box under the hood (with a couple holes punched in it) will keep the mothballs from being a mess and will help with the problem.

If you do not have pets loose, bait bars for rats can work on tree-rats too.

Tree rats will eat out of a dog's dish while a dog is napping, so while fox pee may make them alert, I doubt it will keep them away.

IMO, it would take a lot of creativity and effort to get a snug seal across the bottom of the engine compartment... squirrels are small and pretty damn clever (ask anyone with a birdfeeder). And a "tarp", as in, the blue poly things you get at the hardware store, will abrade the finish on a vehicle.

Fast reply.....

Thanks.

MistressNoName, I actually have squirrel houses around the yard...that was suggested to me awhile back to keep them away from the house and they do seem to work. There is also plenty of food for them. It seems this is breeding season for them and as it's pretty cold here my engine compartment seems to be a warm attractive place. I would have thought that driving it every day would keep them away but it doesn't seem to bother them much.

Guage....thanks...I will get some fox urine today. One question on the pepper spray if I need to go that far.....(and yes I know it's a silly girl knows nothing about cars question...lol)....is there any chance that will blow in through my heat ducts? I mean I don't want to get maced while I'm driving...lmao!!!!

Just to follow up...if you have squirrel houses and still they nest under your hood then that suggests that you simply have lots of stuff around to draw them in and they are well fed and sheltered and have no reason to leave...but they DON'T have any place to raise their young...That's the piece you might want to look into. If they had a better alternative, they might just leave your car alone. Seriously, look into it.

Best,

MNN

Hand grenades will work too. When you see them heading to the car, just pull the pin and throw!

Leave the hood up. They will go on to a new place after a week or so and then you can start closing it again. I have to store vehicles here with the hood up to keep the rodents from moving in.

P.S. Damn glad to see you are back!

Cool suggestion...and free too! Now why didn't I think of that???

P.S. Good to see you back too! Mead????

Hey, I could kill two birds (or squirrels) with one stone! This suggestion would probably put an end to that pesky "Check Engine" light issue too!!!

mnottertail -> RE: OK...It's me so of course it's a weird question... (3/3/2007 12:32:22 PM)

Nope, you are confusing the issue, that is simply one of duct tape.

Hope this helps,

Ron

I think that men believe that every problem in the world can be solved with duct tape or a blow job. Bet I'm not far off!

Good to see ya Ron!!!

mnottertail -> RE: OK...It's me so of course it's a weird question... (3/3/2007 12:37:26 PM)

And exactly what is the issue?  Some favor duct tape, some blowjobs, you in your vast experience I assume see it different, so please tell us what it is..........and for fucks sake dont say world peace.

Dying to know,
Ron

World peace?....nah!!!! I love a good fight. I'd have to say for me personally.....it would be CHOCOLATE. Chocolate and a bottle of Ketel One would definitely solve nearly every issue....or at least make it tolerable.

Perhaps the Johnsons too!

What is all this about blow jobs?

mnottertail -> RE: OK...It's me so of course it's a weird question... (3/3/2007 4:45:59 PM)

I would like to think I can wax eloquent about the bringing of the sheaves, and if you need instructions look me up.

lol
