novicecourtesan -> Great mainstream bdsm movies/books? (2/28/2007 7:07:37 PM)

Hello all..

I am curious to know how many people found bdsm through mainstream movies or books--like I did. I don't know if it was seeing Pedro Almadavar's Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down or sex, lies and videotape or Belle du Jour that first led me down this path, but I know they really influenced me.

The first truly dirty book I read was Opus Pistorium by Henry Miller. I highly recommend it--nothing but outrageous sex scenes between horny amoral men and easy women. Very explicit. But it was when I read Raymond Chandler and Jim Thompson that I realized how prevalent the idea of spanking or whipping during sex could be--hidden in all-american novels. Tennessee Williams was another eyeopener with A Streetcar Named Desire and A Cat on a Hot Tin Roof--and the gorgeous people in those movies helped too...

So...anyone else? Ishould say that I was pretty influenced by Penthouse letters too, just to get that one out of the way.... :)

Perhaps it is that I am a year or two older.....

It all started for me in the mid-60's with the original Batman TV show.

When I was 11 I stole my sisters hidden copy of Madonna's "Justify my Love" video over and over again as I masturbated.  No way could I have told you why it turned me on so much, it just did.

Then, in my senior year of high school, another boy brought in a book of fetish photographs.  I was fascinated by them and yet still had no connection to reality for me.  They were pictures in a book, odd, sexual, but nothing more than an odd book.

It really wasn't until I was 18 and fell into a bdsm chatroom that it finally clicked that this was "real" and something I could have in my life.  Go figure.

I think that 9 1/2 Weeks was my first truly kinky movie.  I'm quite envious of those who'll have Secretary be theirs.  [8|]

DominaSmartass -> RE: Great mainstream bdsm movies/books? (2/28/2007 10:13:03 PM)

I found 9 1/2 Weeks rather disturbing. I don't feel like that relationship is anything close to what I would want to have.

Exit to Eden anyone? I thought it was pretty funny.

I actually prefer small bdsm/kinky subtexts and innuendos in more mainstream things than entire "mainstream" bdsm movies...which never do wiitwd justice.

9 1/2 weeks was my first kinky movie ... when i was 16 ... then it was Quills ...Exit to Eden and The Secretary ... Which is now my all time favorite movie.  I love the scene in the Last Samurai where she is dressing him for battle ... ohhh soo  yummy.

9 1/2 weeks gave me a lot of ideas but it portrayed everything as disturbing, which I disliked. I thought Exit to Eden was very silly. Dan Ackroyd and Rosie O'Donnell in latex? No thanks....Another terrible, terrible "mainstream" bdsm movie....remember Madonna in Body of Evidence? Her videos were much better....

Basic Instinct--sexuality = power. A big turning point...

Who could forget Blue Velvet or Twin Peaks? Ah, David Lynch...Those pretty schoolgirls with big secrets.....

Also--less explicit, but John Malkovich's manipulation of Michelle Pfeiffer and Uma Thurman in Dangerous Liaisons was pretty amazing. The scenes where he teaches Uma the proper vocabulary for a romp (you must knokw latin) and pens a letter to Michelle on another lover's back were both permanently etched in my memory. And Glenn Close would be a pretty powerful domme....

Also for dommes...a little scene classic by Wayne Wang: Center of the World. A very dark Pretty Woman (which I loathed for its lobotomization of sexuality)

I read Story of O, 9 1/2 Weeks and Venus in Furs in high school (15-16) at the local University library. I can trace my kinkiness to around age 5, when I saw a show on tv where a lady was tied up wearing boots. It appealed to me for some reason and it's been all kink since.

With no intent to hijack...i would have to include music lyrics with this thread...for me this is where i have seen bdsm/D/s running all thru lyrics that unsuspecting vanillas would never pick up. Gives me great "food for thought" on the artists and the subliminal signatures they provide with their songs. One particular artist, which is the most obvious in my opinion, is Evanescence - espescially with her new album...

give me a good song and it will become the soundtrack to the movie or story in my own head - can't get much better than that! LOL!

Not a hijack at all....my references are a bit older--the music and lyrics of Morrissey, Nine Inch Nails and Hole....

In High School a friend of mine had stumbled across a copy of The claiming of slepping beauty. She read it outloud to us during lunch. That was my first blantent exposure to the lifestyle. However, when I was a child..........somthing about the female stars in the movie's being tied up and Vampires biting you on the neck made me very curious. When I played with the other kids I was always the "kidnapped" or something like that.

The Secretary
best main stream lifestyle move
The Pet
the worst...very sad cause it could have been good

Well, I was a little young at the time to pay all that much attention to the skin-tight outfits, but for me it was the bondage and the 'struggling' (albeit fake).

Although I didn't see them until much later on, the 'Avengers' from the same era (mid-late 60's) was formative for a lot of people.

And yes, all three of the heroines there through the years (Emma Peel being the more famous) wore tight clothing as well.

Sci-Fi author John Ringo has a series of books featuring a former Navy SEAL, who fights terrorists and is a Dom.  (Thhink a freelance Jack Bauer ala 24, who is a sadistic Dom.)  The BDSM scenes are graphic, and intense.  Later in the series, he inherits a harem in Georgia, (the country, not the state) and hires a harem manager who is a sub pain slut.  Good stuff.  Well-written, humorous and fast paced, with a healthy dose of BDSM.  The titles are Ghost, Kildar, Choosers of the Slain, and Unto the Breach.  They are ususally in the Science fiction section.  Read the rest of Ringo's stuff too.  No BDSM content, but the guy can write a good adventure.

swtrayn -> RE: Great mainstream bdsm movies/books? (3/1/2007 1:34:01 PM)

I have read alot of the books that have been mentioned. Enjoyed most of  them. Another set of books that I found really enjoyable is the "Market Place" series by Laura Antoniou. There are 5 in the full series, sadly I have to say I have only read three of them so far.
