ORIGINAL: hereyesruponyou I have to disagree somewhat in that to me if i am tolerating someone else's beliefs then i am saying i feel they are wrong. This then assumes that my beliefs are superior to theirs. However when i say I respect their beliefs it means that even though i don't understand how they feel or agree i am acknowledging that their beliefs are equal to mine and mean as much to them as mine do to me..... Ok...cool... Thats your outlook on it. I dont necessarily agree totally on it. I think Noah has a better perspective on tolerance than all of us. But the idea that everyone can respect everyone else's beliefs is nieve at best, because at some point someone's beliefs are going to contradict our own or at least disturb us on an ethical and moral level. Then at that point if we dont stand up for our beliefs then how do we really have beliefs? They would be hollow. How many people here are willing to respect the Nazi's Anti Semite beliefs or the Ku Klux Klans beliefs of racial hatred? The notion that we should all respect everyone's elses beliefs and view them as equal to our is, in my opinion, a poorly thought out and unrealisitc "save the world" concept. It seems like its solid at first glance, but once you start to break down the logic, its just silly "feal good" hippy shit. Its like making the statement "The world would be a lot better of a place if we just all got along and were nice to each other." Seems really profound and simple at first, but human beings simply arent wired like that.
