There was a girl I went to elementary school with, she was the 'fat girl' that every school has. I can remember my mother tsk'ing over M's state asking why the parents did nothing. That was back in the days when gym class was mandatory & a daily event.

When does having a fat UM turn to abuse?
Tough call in my mind.

It's very unhealthy to be obese at any age.. but children are not making their own choices as to what is available to them for food choices.  There was a Dr. Phil show on this recently. The little boy was taken from the mother and grandmother and given to the father. He is now very healthy, and no longer obese. If a parent is causing harm,  or doing nothing about a health issue, it  can be considered abuse/neglect. Just like if they were not taken to a Dr. for any other health issue.

The parents need help and guidance in making better food choices.
They don't need punishment, they need a nutritionist to work very
closely with them in the home.

yes, 14 stones is 196 lbs , so this 8 yr old is just under 200 lbs.He is 5 ft tall according to one newspaper. Other than the shock of the numbers, there are other things that jump out even more to me.

"One National Health Service source said: “We have attempted many times to arrange for Connor to have appointments with community and paediatric nutritionists, public health experts, school nurses and social workers to weigh and measure him and to address his diet, but the appointments have been missed. " This seems to indicate to me that the parents really werent proactive until the threat of losing their son produced itself. Especially since the school is on the list, so I am sure that missing school time to make an appointment wouldnt have caused an issue for them. If transportation was the issue, there are plenty of organizations here in the US that will help with that to get to medical appointments, I suspect it is the same in the UK.

I also did a little more research on this child, seems he has been international news for over a year. Last year at age 7 and between 14 and 15 stones, Nicola [his mom] stopped sending Connor to school because he struggles to make the short 5 minute walk from their home without running out of breath and sometimes even vomits with the exertion." and was sleeping on the floor because he had broken so many beds. At that time his mom said:

"He won't eat salad, fruit or veg, which makes things hard, but I make him meals like pasta or rice and a sauce for his tea."
During an average day, Connor will eat three pieces of buttered toast for breakfast, sandwiches or a school meal for lunch, and pasta or a rice dish in the evening.
But Nicola says his downfall is crisps, and he will snack on about four packets a day."

In addition "it was typical for him to consume four Yorkshire puddings with his evening meal and demand snacks every 20 minutes...  We have only just got Connor off processed foods such as sausages and burgers and to start eating meat and poultry, but it is very difficult because we are limited to what he likes. He likes chips and mashed potatoes and all the wrong foods. I am trying to introduce healthier foods to his diet but he refuses to eat 90% of them.”

That christmas he made the news again when he asked a TV hypnotist to "cure him of his 30 giant bag a week addiction to crisps".

This article has a more complete list on what he was eating on a daily basis:
http://timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/health/article1434671.ece

The biggest thing that jumped out to me was that "He won't eat salad, fruit or veg" ...  and "he refuses to eat 90% of them" to me thats a parenting thing. Also one of the articles mentioned his mom said "When he was a baby I had to give him bottles every hour and he used to constantly cry with hunger." So she started indulging him as an infant, feeding him to keep him from crying ? Indulging him and giving him snacks every 20 minutes seems to be the same sort of behavor.... instead of letting television be his babysitter, she is letting food be his babysitter.

One of the articles mentioned his family doesnt have a history of obesity and he has a teenage sister who is a size 8.

However there may be hope, the grandmother broke into the house and threw out their deep fat fryer and installed a steamer last week and has made an appointment for the boy to see a child obesity specialist, which SHE will take him to.

Great idea and who pays for these slobs to learn how to raise a child?  Maybe there should be a rule for parenting similiar to exhaust emissions for cars...Every two years you have to be checked out....If you can't take care of yourself...obese, uneducated...Then you will be rendered sterile until you can meet some sort of minimum requirement to breed....Or your child should be put up for adoption to a family that is willing to give a shit...After all this is America ..right?

I wonder if mom makes the better choices for her meals as well, sometimes children want to eat (or try) what they see other's around them eating.

It's one thing to be medically overweight. I'm sure that the people taking the kid away are not going to overlook those prospects, so don't get your panties in a bunch. There are understandable reasons for obesity.

However, with more information provided, it seems that medical health issues are caused by the obesity. You know, indulging a kid at such a young age because they are 'hungry'? There are meal plans and healthy weights for infants, and the kid could be crying about practically anything- it's the way babies communicate. And the kid won't eat 90% of the crap given to him? Then he'll go to bed hungry! What is the deal with these parents giving in to every whim of their children? Hopefully this will produce a widespread 'panic' of sorts that'll knock some sense into these people's heads. If the kid is really intolerant to raw fruits and veggies, there are healthy and safe ways around it. Just because there may be an underlying medical condition in that department does not mean the kid has to way as much as he does. That is rediculous. I think the biggest crime here is those numb-nuts were allowed to procreate. At least granny is taking some sort of action.

Thank God for the obese!  What would happen in our school systems without these individuals to take the brunt of all teasings. What if there were no fat kids and the "cool" kids were forced to turn on each other for their amusement...Anarchy!!!!  So keep feeding kids Mcnuggets and processed foods and the world will turn as it always has in complete harmony. Where would we be without our "Bubbas" and "Fat pat the water rats?"  The whole system of public education would topple with out the maligned few absorbing all of the the snide remarks, as well as countless calories...It takes to make the system work.

the above sentence was highlighted to associate relevance with the paragraph that follows, not to disagree that health concerns with ones wee ones shouldn't be addressed by their caregivers in some fashion.  other than that, this slave agrees with Aileen68 with regards to the general topic.

that said, agreeing with the government(Department of ___________) with regards to which Dr. or treatment will be undertaken and that the family will pursue with regards to their minor has been recently ruled on here is the US, at least in the state of VA.

I agree in some ways it's the parents fault for making theirkids fat at so younge a age. However the witch hunt will never end, first it was spanking, then it was  your kid is monsterous and won't be have next it'll be obesiety, next it'll be your kids to skinny you must be starving it, next it'll be you home school? oh you're depriving your child.

There's so many people who're actually in danger actually abused, it's a lil silly to put fat kids on the register.

Witch hunts will never end. once one hunt is acomplished there will be another in it's wake.

Most posters have assumed "parents". In fact the little lump has only a single mother.
The usual suspects have posted that "investment", I suppose from the taxpayer, is the answer. No it isnt,  it wont make a blind bit of difference. The plain fact is that many children are brought into this world by people who quite frankly are clueless or indifferent. Dont shout at me. Thats an observable fact. Therefore all that should be done is to tell the mother she is failing. Explain what, she almost certainly knows, needs to be done and leave it at that.

To those who wish to "save the world" with other peoples money I am quite certain there exist other more deserving causes.
Incidently in the UK a dog owner was recently taken to court because the dog was overweight, lol

Mercnbeth -> RE: Obese boy may be taken from parents (2/27/2007 2:05:56 PM)

The way things are progressing, with deference to the "nanny state", the last decision you are allowed to make as a parent is whether to abort.

YourhandMyAss -> RE: Obese boy may be taken from parents (2/27/2007 9:21:45 PM)

I agree, other wise the mom might of known that babies cry for other reasons than hunger, and would of known stuffing a baba in said mouth is not the solution.
