Hello windchymes,

Mass media can do what they need to for ratings.  News, by definition is supposed to be the unbaised reporting of current and the most relevant issues of the day.

Hi puella :)

That's very true, and I thought about expanding on that when I posted, but didn't.   Problem is, there are so many newscasts from every major network who all compete with each other for advertising dollars... it's much more about money than it is about unbiased news reporting.  I'm just making a guess, but they probably always hope to attract younger viewers as each generation comes of age.  And the news stories about Britney, Paris, Lindsey, and Ashlee, etc. do attract them.

I think the question is WHY do we care so much about celebs and stupid things they do?

To borrow Ron's method of social commentary:

"The nose of the mob, is its imagination. By this, at any time, it can be quietly led."

I've thought about this, and have developed a little theory. My theory is that less literate types will almost always opt for television, over reading a newspaper or news magazine, any day of the week. And advertisers are going to buy ads on networks that program stuff that audiences watch. If their audience is less sophisticated (in general) then they program what sells ads. It's a vicious circle, but occasionally, some network (CNN, as an example) will attempt to break away from the rest of the pack, and program real news, more often than "psuedo-news."

It's filler. It's an escape. Some peope like it. Maybe this theory isn't altogether accurate, though, because intelligent people do watch tv, and some people do watch simply because it's quick, and they are pressed for time, when it comes to getting thier "news", and have come to rely on the tv for it.

But (IMO) unintelligent people, as a rule, don't spend a lot of time reading newspapers and news magazines - and there is a lot less of this kind of stuff in them (unless you want to count The National Enquirer, et. al, which I don't, but that's just me). At the least, it's balanced by more real news (or what I consider "real news" anyway) than tv can be.

I agree, as someone mentioned, that there is also an over-abundance of so-called "news channels" on cable, and they are all in fierce competition - and if one programs this stuff, sometimes the rest follow, for fear of losing viewers I guess. It doesn't make that much sense to me, really, either. I occasionally watch this kind of stuff for a few minutes, but am glad I can surf channels when it's on.

I guess it's nice to see rich, pretty, stupid people fall flat on their face.

KatyLied: That's it, I think. I also think it's a sort-of recreational escape.

Hello windchymes,

Relevant to what, exactly?

I can actually see many issues having relevance to many things.

Comparing one person's death from drugs,  and holding it against a soldiers death to see which should have more air time makes no sense.

I would imagine both types of issues would have some type of relevence to some types of people out there.

Mass media is not going to ask you or me what 'issues' we are interested in hearing about.  They are going to produce news of all sorts, that all sorts of people may or may not like to see.

I think perhaps we can find interest in,  learn from, acknowledge, and create awareness for all types of human issues and experiences out there.

KatyLied -> RE: Anna Nicole, Brittany.... a Sad Sign of Our Times (2/23/2007 1:10:14 PM)

We also need to consider that this stuff is driven by ratings.  As much as some people don't care about Anna Nicole and Britney, there are many others who do, and they are tuning in.

You can not honestly justify the complete stoppage of coverage of the seminal issue of our age, the complete stoppage of coverage the immediate top priority issues of concerning  country's welfare in a time of 'war'  and our citizens  very livelihood by two major news networks for live coverage of where best to bury a dead woman's rotting corpse?

You can not possibly thing these things are at all of the same importance, news worthiness or relevancy to a news network?

Im sorry Puella, I cannot share in your valuation system of measuring the importance of human lives.  Nor do I share in your anger over the vast coverage of what some consider to be 'relevant' world/social issues.

I also have a hard time refering to those who have died (in whatever ways) as "bloated 'tards and rotting corpses".

I made a valid point about the issue at hand.

I will leave you to your anger, however.

edited for a typo

puella -> RE: Anna Nicole, Brittany.... a Sad Sign of Our Times (2/23/2007 2:58:28 PM)

Just a correction.. bloated corpse was for she who was badly decomposing due to the lengthy irrelevant monologues of the judge. Celebutard (not my own personal creation, but apt, none the less) was for the ill behaved and witless Brittany.

Fair enough, you can not or choose not to evaluate which things are of vital importance and which are not...

Outrage and anger are not the same thing.

Don't rock the boat.........Just be happy and watch the #24 car go around the track.....Weeeeeeeeee!!!!

[RANT ALERT]

What is wrong with us all?

Sex sells. Sleaze sells. People don't want to think. They want entertainment. TV does the thinking for us.

Did you know that when people watch TV, they use less brain power than when they sleep?

puella -> RE: Anna Nicole, Brittany.... a Sad Sign of Our Times (2/23/2007 3:06:32 PM)

No, I didn't realize that at all!  How interesting...

RWAble -> RE: Anna Nicole, Brittany.... a Sad Sign of Our Times (2/23/2007 3:16:03 PM)

I often wondered about why people watch those cars go around in circles? If I am going to go to something like that, Heck, I want to be driving that car.

There is a place for everything and a time for everything....and it was inappropriate on both counts to shut of real news to morph into entertainment tabloidism...in my opinion.

I'm in full agreement, there is a time and a place, but this is a left-wing utopian principle i.e. the world should be fair and manage the important issues. The reality is however life isn't consistent with this notion and money makes the world go 'round.

puella -> RE: Anna Nicole, Brittany.... a Sad Sign of Our Times (2/23/2007 4:08:40 PM)

Oy!  It's my rant and I will apply Utopian principals every which where I like!
