seeksfemslave: I wonder about things like where creative thoughts coem from, too. Like how did Mozart become inspired to write a particular piece of music, for example - did it just pop into his head, seemingly from nowhere?

Thoughts per se don't have "power."
It's the action that they inspire that has "power."

I would debate this by countering that if you think about sex your penis gets hard, and if your thoughts had no power, this would not happen. I think our thoughts can make us sick also, and they are finding our thoughts can change things outside of ourselves too.

How about genuine creative or original thoughts. Where do they come from.? Maybe there's no such thing and we just rehash what we have picked up as we travel along the highway of life. Most of us do I'm sure.

I think original thoughts do exist but are very very rare.

Good point.. look at Mozart.. from God's lips to his ears. Some people seem to be connected to something larger than themselves

I am still "thinking" about the other responses which are all very deep... CM is filled with deep thinkers...lol

Not to compare my self to Mozart ( I am not worthy to shine his shoes musically).  But the way Musical thoughts come into my mind at times is very fascinating.  I do my best stuff when I kind of trance out, and progressions just come from somewhere.  On rare occasions I find myself almost outside myself looking at my hand, not believeing I am playing what I am.  The Greeks called it a muse, and defined it as a  minor sort of deity.  I really do not understand the concept and am very fascinated by it.  Though to me creating is more of a "non thinking" event than a thinking one.  Zen Bhuddism and Taoism have some insights on it that seem very true to me.

It think "Thoughts" have power on many different levels, and every comment has been true to some degree.  There are also several different types of thinking.  Also, I do believe in "magic", and think directed thoughts can be very powerfull things, causing tangible results.

ElectraGlide -> RE: Thoughts (2/21/2007 10:33:17 PM)

My thoughts come during idle time. That is why I like to hike and metal detect to get away from it all to clear my mind to get fresh good thoughts. A long motorcycle or car ride does the same to me. I choose to have positive thoughts. They are a desire to keep myself on a smooth pace like a map. Enough of me my thoughts sound awfull sappy lol.

My thoughts come in the stillness between the notes of my life.

Inspiration and/or necessity and, most probably, other places as well.

I agree with this to a point, but with so many inventions brought to the market every year, I don't think it's as rare as one would ... um, think. ::chuckles::

What do you believe thoughts are?

Notions, ideas, sentiments, expressions of feelings...they are the basis of our actions.

quote:

Do they have substance?

As far as physical matter, no.  But their significance is a form of substance.  And each person might weigh in on similar thoughts differently, so the substance can vary from person to person.

quote:

Are they things?

In that a thought is a noun and nouns are things, yes.  A "thing" is defined (among many definitions) as an event, circumstance, effect, idea, notion...so yes, thoughts are things, just not physical things.

quote:

Do they have power?

They have as much power as people give them.  A thought is a thing, and all things have energy.  How much energy we feed into our thoughts determines its power.

quote:

If they have power, where does it come from and what shape does it take?

Their power comes from us...from the energy we feed it.  The shape it takes on depends on how much we give to it.  Wars were started from thoughts.  Peace was created from thoughts.  There is an entire concept of the power of positive thinking.  We can tap into our inner core with our thoughts.  We pray with our thoughts.  We heal with our thoughts.  I believe we attract life events according to our thoughts.  Our energy attracts like energy.  Kind of like, if you think you're going get sick then you are more likely to end up sick.  Those with more postiive attitudes tend to be healthier, or heal more quickly, or might be happier overall.

quote:

What are your thoughts about your thoughts?

Our thoughts define us.  They lay out our path.  We can change our path by changing our thoughts.  Given the parameters I have in which to live, at any moment of any day, I can choose my direction.  I chose to think about this thread and post to it.  I chose to rise above the bad day I was having.  I made those choices by shifting my thoughts to a better place.  I think when we obsess, we are letting our thoughts control us.  I think some people think too much, and others not enough.  Some days we need to rest and think about lighthearted stuff, like what color polish to put on my toes :)  Some days we need to really dig deep and discover what we're made of.  But all of this requires thought, and how we balance our thoughts determines how we live.

I am no Mozart but I do write music and play a variety of instruments.  When I write songs using my guitar I tap into my blind inspiration, which is first get an initial thought, write something then play each portion again in the belief by the time I get to the end of what already is down on paper that something new will appear in my head.  I rarely try to write out something by diberate thought, but will proof read it once written by that more conscious thought process.

Point is that something created by inspiration is far more encompassing (part intitution, emotion, past experience, and part hope for the future, with plenty of part "other") than the more usual more conscious approaches.  I see a close parallel of "inspiration" to forms of dreaming but one is awake.

seeksfemslave -> RE: Thoughts (2/22/2007 1:01:10 AM)

To answer my own question about truly creative thoughts I believe that by and large they come from observation or experience of natural things. Then something in the "mind" of a creative person "sees" a different angle and bingo.... flash of inspiration.
I know very well that I have never had one. I mean a creative thought lol.

This doesn't explain the existence of child geniuses like Mozart for example. Tho' maybe it does if he was exposed to music from the beginning of his life.

The operation, existence and explanation of the mind and self consciousnes are a major challenge to the Scientific method.
Science is not all, despite its incredible successes

Vendaval -> RE: Thoughts (2/22/2007 2:00:08 AM)

I have heard quite a few musicians, artists, writers and performers
say that their inspiration flows into them.  That they cannot truly
take credit for the ideas,  they are simply the conduit for the
idea coming into form.  Many will say they tap into a "higher
consciousness" or "universal mind".

luckydog1 -> RE: Thoughts (2/22/2007 2:20:10 AM)

Interesting point on Music creation, I did recently meet a 3 year old unmentionable of friends who is a potential "Mozart".   He could play the drums decently, and is working on guitar.  A potential prodigy for sure.  He claims one of his imaginary friends teaches him how to play.  His stepfather is a music teacher and local rock god, so he has full opprotunity for it.

Hey, saw this one trolling past whilst i was writing email, and thought i would take a crack at it.
Please understand that i am an artist, so this may sound slightly wacky. (and long)
i believe that no one thinks in the same way as anyone else, in the same way that no one really looks like anyone else, our thoughts are all individual, and that i believe is a part of what everyone calls inspiration. It's not that i know something you don't, it's more that i wasn't thinking like you were.

Of course, thoughts do have a power of there own, that is proven, through Quantum field Theroy and beyond that your thoughts are usually what produce your actions. Thoughts are the reasons we do things.

To tangent a little, and to talk about inspiration, i will say that believe that i have had direct and immidiate inspiration only *once* that i remember, after viewing The Angel Of The North. Other than that, in my Art school, we are taught to be inspired; taught to have ideas by looking at other ideas, reading, viewing, talking and doing.

It's not a matter of inspiration, its more of taking your point of view to different places and then commenting in any manner that you can.

Quantum theory was the impetus behind this post...

I watched this video called What The Bleep Do We Know? and I was familiar with much of the information in it, but the way it was compiled, along with some other information I have received lately has had me deeply thinking about thoughts, creation, and what reality really is.. I am thinking of redeveloping some of the way I view my own field also...

Here is that video I mentioned for those interested... it is nearly two hours long

Just expanding on musical creativity; composers do not create from absolutely nothing. There are underlying rules and techniques that can be learned. But having learned those rules or instictively taken them on board the creative aspect then emerges  to produce a lasting pop song or a work of transcendental genius.

I can doodle around on the piano but I either apply hackneyed phrases or try things with not the foggiest idea of the sound sequence I am going to produce.
When I see a score of say a piano concerto I know I am reading something that is ...well its difficult to describe it just represents a level of mental activity or thought processes that are  incapable of analysis. By me anyway.

Scientists may think it can all be reduced to mechanical/electrical processes.
Naaaaaagh !
