My bros computer was locking him out. He called to ask me- yadda yadda.

He is new to the Net. As it turns out- he has been clicking on fake messages!!!!

if dreams could come true- ild get my mom online. and my gram.

Another to watch out for are the fake window onces. You go to close the windows by the close button at the top right, to find the whole fake window itself is just one big link button...

We live, we learn. I had my first internet hook-up a whole 5 weeks before I had to buy a new motherboard. That was a nasty 'lil bug it picked up.

It was more than likely a POS motherboard. The only way a bug can take out a mobo is if it infects the BIOS. Typically the BIOS antivirus protection is enabled.

That's what it did then. Norton detected it, got its' ass kicked, and when I tried taking it out from DOS, my puter actually gave me the finger, and died (no shit, little graphic of the middle finger). The friend who dragged me into the 21st century by giving me the 'puter was over for a full 24 hours fixing it and had to wipe the hard drive twice to get rid of it. Lucky for me, spring term at school had just started, so I didn't lose weeks of work on anything.

Dunno. I was actually fairly competent with a 386 and DOS, back when Windows was a 'get this piece of shit off my computer' nightmare. Life changed and I hardly touched 'em again until '04. Really need to take a good class and get current. I wound up buying a new mobo, one way or the other.

Good old DOS.. And Windows 3.1.. What a bloody useless program that was. I used Quickmenu to launch all my stuff. Simple point and click and the app or game was loaded. I loved DOS personally. I used it so much I still remember most of the commands for it.

The thing about a popup is that they can remove not only the menus, but the Windows control bar. One poster said to close them from the taskbar, and that is absolutely correct.

To know if you have to do that, roll the mouse pointer over the X at the right edge. You should get the little yellow windows popup that says close, now go to the body of the page, if it still says close that's the time you need to close from the taskbar.

Sometimes it is even almost better to use Ctrl+Alt+Del if using ME or 98. Then you are sure, but if you don't do it fast your internet connection may time out. Select it and end task.

Also be very aware of those little ones that disappear right away. check the taskbar. Good idea to scan for virii and spyware after you get one of those.

Also they can disable the right click, but usually you can get to View>Source in the menus. Save that as a text file. Best to open it is Word, where you can search, the text is enormous usually. Don't save it as a DOC file, make it TXT. That way Word will not parse it.

Search for http and then ftp. When the string matches, copy and paste the URL into notepad or something. Save all of them. Then you can look for cookies, or alot of things. You can also look for EXE files in your temp directories. (see, I am DOS too, I didn't call them folders).

You will have to set Windosexplorer to show all details, and go by dates as well. You CAN find it.

Of course others will just get out the Linix disk, one day I think I will. But not today.

I second that, well over a decade on i to still remember most of the commands. I remember i used to have great fun with win 3.1 & 3.11 WGs.

I used to print screen then save it as the wallpaper in the back ground, minimise the main program window, hide the program window icon some were out of sight. I had great fun watching people furiously clicking away at icons and windows that weren't actually there.

i was more of a deltree c:\ type person, although looking back i think i may have used format c:\ y way to many times.

Still have the installation floppy disks for Dos 6.2 and windows 3.11 although what state they are now in i don't know. I think i even have the extremely large number of floppy disks ( 30 or so ) that was the installation disks for ( i apologies to every that is offended by the following, and i know i will burn in hell for saying it ) OS2 Warp, oh the shame of it..
