Drivers appear to be scoping out one house. What they can’t see is that inside, Dateline is conducting a sophisticated undercover operation." /snip/

I think they should be dropped off on an island somewhere... but not one of the fun tropical paradise types.

Give them clubs, booze and PCP and no means of getting off the island. Then let Darwin cackle as they beat the brains out of each other. Televise it. Let it serve as a warning to others that might be tempted.

Every parent should see it. It airs late in the evening. They hit so far I think 8 different cities in the USA.

Chris Hansen is the anchor. Shocked me- that he has caught guys he caught once before.

If you have children under 18,... you MUST educate yourself on this.   This very minute your kid could be in the process of being lured in by one of these creeps.

The only problem I have, is that Dateline doesn't do the work, there's a For-Profit, they're cutting checks to which does the vigilante work. Which is GOOD for Dateline, b/c some day, these guys will screw up, and Dateline won't be holding the liability.

Just One, "Oh you're the PLUMBER who's come to fix the sink?" is all it takes to put a company like that out of business.

Alternately, People could make sure their daughters don't leave the house unescorted unless they're armed and trained to shoot thrice, see if it moves, if it does, shoot thrice again, should it be necessary to kill someone.

So- my dear sir, you haven't seen the show.

Dateline works in conjuction with a nonprofit AND law enforcement.  If you seen the show- you would know that.

Vigilante?   Please explain.

The public embaressment of the predators, ( and mind you, I'm not defending anyone, just critiquing what I consider shoddy journalism, and poor public policy ) amounts to extra-judicial punishment.

I think the other downside may be worse. Dive the REAL SICKOS out of the light and into places ( and using encryption tech ) which Peverted Justice isn't invited into, and where REAL Law Enforcement can't go either.

Long Story Short, Teach your daughters to shoot, when to shoot, what to use as a weapon if for some outlandish reason you're out of the house and unarmed ( Anything, Everything. Drink The Motherfucker's Blood honey... ) , and how to properly carry concealed weapons when you are.

NEWS? I usually wait until it hits Commentary, myself.

slashdot, metafilter, digg, here, wonkette, crooksandliars pretty much rounds out the "take a look", debka is, I understand the mouthpiece of the Mossad, which means it has a useful slant to it. Jerusalem Post, just to see how shit is playing over there. I *try* to listen to Democracy Now every time I can, but that's dependent upon what my day is like.

Yeah I caught some of these episodes.

I even caught one where one of the guys had got caught on a previous episode. Obviously he wasn't punished as severely as he should have been the first time around!

They must just slap them on the wrist and say "It's okay, just don't do it again"

Many times pedophiles do not even attempt to hide their activities. In fact, just last year they caught TWO people in the Homeland Security department screwing around with underage girls on the government computers. And they made no attempt to hide their profession. In fact, they said on line they work for Homeland Security.
These people they catch are the ones that dont hide their activities, the ones that do hide it are never caught and probably number in the millions. What's the old saying? You see one cockroach crawling on the floor, that means there are hundrends behind the wall.

But keep in mind that shows like this isnt doing much good. Sure you can argue that they are taking a few people off the street. However this will not scare pedophiles and it wont solve the problem. Pedophilia has been around since the dawn of our species. It is world-wide. No government or society has been able to eliminate it no matter what the punishment is. You can make child molestation punishable by death. But the dealth penalty hasnt stopped murder, has it? So why would you think it would stop pedophilia? It defies logic. Some scientists think pedophilia may have genetic roots since it occurs in every type of society, every economic class, every age, and in every race and gender. If that is the case, we will never solve the problem.

this series infuriates me. the vast majority of these so-called "predators" are far from it, but rather just average, typical (tho perhaps stupid) men who are hoping to take advantage of an opportunity that is tossed in their laps. these "decoys" use very explicit language, and will even be aggressive, in order to lure these poor guys into this Dateline/Perverted Justice trap. also we have to remember that these are not naive, innocent children we are talking about here, but adolescents and teenagers. we are also not talking about anything approaching nonconsent.
my grandfather married my grandmother when he was 26 and she was 14...according to Dateline, that makes him a "predator." the fact that our modern western society infantalizes (sp) young people to the point where they're considered drooling, mentally and emotionally incompetent babies until they hit 17 or 18 is the true crime. it wasn't so very long ago that a person of 13, 14, 15 years old was expected to be mature and responsible enough to handle hard physical labor on a farm, tending and raising livestock, cleaning and maintaining an entire household, working an outside job to contribute to household finances, taking care of younger children, and in some cases had families of their own. now young people of this same age are viewed as doe-eyed innocents who need constant protecting from the big bad world. it's mind boggling.

the sad thing is that there truly are child predators out there, a great many of them, but they will never find them so long as they continue to focus on these clueless average joes. i speak as a woman who was violently sexually abused throughout my childhood, starting at age 5. He scarred me for life, physically and emotionally, to the point where i'll likely always be broken. He is a true predator against children. but you will not find him online being seduced by the aggressive flirtations of some 12 year old. that is not the M.O. of his kind.

It isn't very often that the plumber has engaged in some form of instant messaging and sexual innuendo with the said "child" and then shows up at the doorstep with flowers and beer in order to fix the sink.
