I'm looking for software that allows remote access to my home PC; particularly, file transfer abilities. I don't mind paying for a subscription, but they must have a trial period first so I can be sure it works over Wi-Fi. I've already tried LogMeIn, which works wonderfully at home, and erratically to not at all with Wi-Fi. I have home wireless networking so I don't need it in the house, and since I work 10-hour days at home on the computer, the whole idea is to be able to take my laptop over to Panera and be *away* for awhile to write emails, browse the forums, work on my music or my novels, or whatever, on my days off.

Does anyone use a program for this that they can recommend?

LOL Microsoft Windows will do it. NT will do it. the new release from Microsoft will do it.

do you wnat it hard wired or wireless? Using Ether net, fiber optics, .......?

Since the Panera is about 8 miles away, clearly hard wired is out of the question!

I'm not sure I completely understood what you are trying to do. If this is totally wrong, could you try to explain it again.

This is what I think you are trying to do:
You want to take you laptop to a remote location (somewhere with wi-fi) and be able to access/control you desktop at home?

If that's it and your desktop is windows xp, you can use Remote Desktop or you can use VNC on pretty much any flavor of windows or linux.

Let me know if I even got close.

My son linked my wireless laptop with his desktop using XP someway. Not sure. Unfortunately he is out of the country and I can't ask him how he did it. I do know it took hrs since he was here in AZ and his desktop was in Cali with his gf

XP has Remote Desktop Connection so you can log in remotely. If you are just transferring files you can use ServU FTP on the host, CuteFTP on the client and have your machine act as a file server.

Well, I only have XP Home, and although it pretends to have Remote Control, there is no way to set it up, and the only instructions available anywhere are for XP Pro and are not even close to what is available on XP Home. I do have an XP Pro upgrade CD, but it crashes my computer when I try to upgrade to Pro, and when I just try to install Remote Control, it tells me that I already have it on my computer. So, I'm pretty much fucked.

A program I've used in order to be able to access my PC from anywhere is RealVNC. It's fairly simple to use. Your computer will need to be connected to the internet, obviously, and you will be running the VNC server on it. You will set up a password to access your PC, and then, to actually access it from another computer, you would use that password and your IP address to access it, using VNC Viewer. (The two applications are bundled together in RealVNC). Obviously, this means that you need to have this program installed on the computer you are using to access the home computer as well.

It's a free download, and available at http://www.realvnc.com. Hope that helps!

If you are having problems getting XP's Remote Desktop to work, go with VNC. You need to download and install the server on your desktop at home and set it up like he described.

If you don't want to try to remember your ip address (it can change often) use a free service like www.no-ip.com and you can setup a name that will take you to your pc. http://www.no-ip.com/services/managed_dns/free_dynamic_dns.html

Okay, I got RealVNC to work... but ALSO, LogMeIn also works just fine. It turns out <sigh> that McCaffee hadn't allowed the Active X control when I'd tried to access from Panera yesterday. I got that cleared up, and it works like wow! The Remote Desktop works on the free version, but there's a monthly or annual subscription to use the better version which allows file transfer and file sharing, which of course is what I want it for <smile> So thanks everyone, and I'm going to use LogMeIn, as I like the interface better than RealVNC even though it's a few dollars more :) :)
