What do you do when you are really craving a big meal with all the trimmings..but you are alone that night.

Tis what is happening with me today...i am craving baked chicken with pototoes and stuffing etc.....

I have been sick and the only thing that helps until I get the surgery is rest...I have not slept well the last couple of nights..so am really feeling rotten today, I could invite someone over...but is kicking them out after dinner rude?

make the meal and be happy you have at least satified one need.it is a shame to denign your needs while alone.just a thought!!

Roast your chicken! Then make an easy pot pie with the leftovers that you can freeze for another 'need a big meal night'. Using fold out pie crust & adding cream of potato soup & frozen veggies. Bake 45 minutes when thawed.
MMMMMM.

Pot pie is an excellent idea... yummy! Freezing is good too, especially if you are not feeling well and need meals later.

When I was young, single and working 2 jobs and trying to have a social life, I would do this kind of thing a lot (turkey, chicken) and make several meals out of it.

You can cook the carcus in enough water to cover (as well as any meat attached) to make stock (broth)... add to the water roughly chopped celery (include the leaves),  carrots, onion, salt/pepper and any spices you like cook for a few hours until it becomes concentrated and strain... voila! Chicken Stock. Then, with the broth, you can make soup with the meat pulled off the chicken and any leftover veggies.  Or, I just like broth by itself with some baby bok choy in it. (I make chicken stock a lot!)

The stock can also be used to make other things like rice or mashed potatoes (in place of water)... stock lasts for like a week in your fridge, or you could freeze it too.

Other ideas...
Chicken salad
Chicken tacos/burritos
Put the cooked chicken in your green/mixed salad
Make pasta with your favorite sauce and toss the chicken in
Rice with chicken and veggies (chop some fresh tomato and scallions on top too)

The possibilities are only limited by your imagination... having cooked chicken on hand is fantastic when you are busy or not feeling well

I hope you feel better soon

edited because I hit "Ok" by accident... d'oh! [8D]

Surgery?

When I crave a big meal, I just make it :p I don't need other people to eat :D But, if you are sick, eating a big meal would probably not be a good idea. Of course, it depends on what you are sick with...

Or you could go out to eat.
Here in Myrtle Beach, S.C. we have 3200 restaurants.
All kinds of buffets where it's "All you can eat!"
Chinese, Seafood, Italian, Southern Style, great steak houses.

DiurnalVampire -> RE: Craving a big meal but alone (2/9/2007 1:04:46 PM)

Id make the meal, baking the chicken would make the house smel inviting and youd get the meal you wanted.
Inviting someone over for dinner, and thena  little conversation before you kicked them out isnt such a bad thing. After al, if your sick, theyd understand.  Ive invited Angel over ust ebcase I didnt feel like eatting alone

hot1 -> RE: Craving a big meal but alone (2/9/2007 1:06:00 PM)

First is not serious surgery and has nothing  makes it better or worse other than rest.....

Second, I have meals in my freezer...I actually cook and freeze meals and sell them as a side business, along with jams, jellies etc.  I do a mean chicken pot pie....but the meal i am craving tonight....is one that does not freeze well....yes I could do leftovers tomorrow...is just i hate making a meal that should be for me than just me...guess I don't feel like I am worth it...lol...strange but true.

Third, you are very lucky if you can go out and enjoy restarants....I don't seem to be able to....they just don't cook up to my standards.  I actually have one friend that refuses to go out to a restaurant with me anymore because of this.

So likely i will do something else that will freeze..or take one that is already done out of the freezer.  Am still thinking about inviting someone over and kicking him out afterwards....lol

Sensual, good ideas! When i move back to MA, (Dedham area) i'll be over!  With all the conveniences food-wise, you can make a complete meal with little effort...

Always and all ways,

I did not realize you were in the food industry, my bad...

I would not feel bad inviting friends over... they would more then likely welcome your company since they know you are not feeling well.  If they are friends, they would understand.

Also, you should feel like you are worth it, you need to feel good about yourself/have a positive attitude before surgery, no matter what kind it is...

[:D] Likewise, but I don't have any friends who refuse to eat with me. They either put up with my bitching, or they are not my friends [;)] In fact, I could do a whole rant about how horrible restaurant food is....

If you're sick, you are pardoned a lot of things. In fact, I'm sure there would be a lot of people who would love to have a meal with you, and would leave before you had to kick them out .... "I only want your services as an eater..." [:D]

ha ha ha... Well, I do love to cook... You are moving back to Massachusetts? I want to get out!  Too cold and expensive.

I am actually sitting here thinking I need to get out a roaster chicken out of the freezer to make tomorrow and then chicken stock on Sunday, and chicken salad for the work-week.

ownedgirlie -> RE: Craving a big meal but alone (2/9/2007 6:35:15 PM)

I live alone and often cook myself gourmet dinners.  I don't need company to enjoy a good meal! I look at it as a way of honoring myself, as I think I'm worth more than a frozen dinner :)

I made lamb shanks the other day.  Last night was a good juicy tri tip dinner.  Last week I cooked yummy stuffed bell peppers...enchiladas before that.  And...with all this good (and HEALTHY) food, I am losing weight, too!

So treat yourself right, and enjoy!

cjenny -> RE: Craving a big meal but alone (2/9/2007 6:46:16 PM)

But sometimes the right company makes the meal taste even better!

Couldn't agree more. Eating is only part of the eating experience.....good conversation, wine, food......it's a package.

Beth, I'm only approx. 10 billion miles from Canada.......have you ever considered getting on a plane to England (with chicken, stuffing and potatoes in tow) and working your magic over here for someone who will appreciate it? :-) If not, why?

chrissyslave -> RE: Craving a big meal but alone (2/10/2007 3:39:54 AM)

hot1/Beth,

Well, I think the advice to cook a nice meal for yourself here is misplaced.  DiurnalVampire had the right idea I think, but of course being a slave/sub yourself you don't have a sub to do those things for and with you.

The fact as you know is you are alone Beth, been and feeling sick, and haven't had much sleep in days (just to remind other members of these key facts).  What you need is one of two things, or both.  First of all, if you have a decent friend you like to talk with, call them up and see if they can come over to share a meal with you.  And secondly, ask if they are are willing to help fix the meal, or if not at least pick some up on the way over and you volunteer to pay for it.  I suggest gorcery stores with take-out food prepared, or some fast food places (sub Qs for example) have quick pick up entries.  I also like the wine aspect if it won't affect your health or too close to your surgery time.

Most of all you need some TLC pampering bit mentally and physically, and to mentally prepared for your surgery.  Wishing you the very best for both now and at that time Beth.  Hopefully that will take care of whatever is bothering your body right now.  Maybe someone here that lives nearby might volunteer to do that, but know such topics are read by relatively few at any one time.

My piece of advice:

If you feel like doing something, do it.

SirKenin -> RE: Craving a big meal but alone (2/10/2007 6:18:25 AM)

Go to a homeless shelter and invite a bunch of people over for dinner.

cjenny -> RE: Craving a big meal but alone (2/10/2007 6:24:43 AM)

A generous idea but I don't think I would want a group of strangers in my house while living alone....that sounds a bit scary to me. I wouldn't hesitate to drop off a cooked meal or help out at a shelter though..just no strangers in the house please.

aSlavesLife -> RE: Craving a big meal but alone (2/10/2007 6:29:36 AM)

Cook and eat the meal, then bribe the homeless with the scraps, having them do tricks. When they have exhausted themselves, toss the food in the street and enjoy the bloodbath that ensues. Sounds like a great evening of entertainment to me.
