Most of these studies are done on mice where they feed them MASSIVE quantitied of the chemical. Unless you're guzzling like 25 gallons of soda or something a day that's sweetened with this stuff, the risks are low.

People simply love drama and scare tactics...if you want an example, go look up the shit about dihydrogen monoxide (H20 = water). They make it sound like pretty damned dangerous stuff. Yet, we can't live without it.

Actually the nutrasweet/migraine connection isn't with massive quantities. Even a small amount can trigger a migraine or make one worse.

It's probably the maltodextrin (sp?) they use to keep it in fluffy powder form. I have trouble with it too, if I drink enough of it. But then, I'm very sensitive to stuff like that, especially things that end in "-tol".

I have never had an issue with maltodextrin that I am aware of.  I have had an issue with anything containing sucrolose, not solely in the powder form.

One thing to keep in mind is that we have bad findings about all the sweeteners on the market.  Even stevia.  In reality, if used sparingly none of them are really going to cause you harm (usually anyway.)

What bad findings have been made about stevia?

I live on the stuff. I do sometimes buy products with maltitol, but I can only eat it sparingly or I don't feel good. It's the only artificial sweetener I can tolerate (and it's derived from alcohol, it's not completely chemical the way aspartame et al are).

Okay.. On the sweetener issue here.. There are some misunderstandings because this is one I have been following for years due to many issues including health.

Saccharin was declared unhealthy after causing cancer in rats, and nutrasweet (aspartame/asulfame K) was pushed onto the market without proper testing. It was later discovered that the amount of saccharin used in the testing of the rats was equivalent to what a human would ingest at 50,000 times the normal daily dose. Yet, it was never accepted widely back into the market. Only in Sweet N Low and as tablet form. The test that they said saccharin turned into formaldehyde at 100 degrees was inaccurate, it was 105 degrees and any human that reaches 105 degrees is in danger of dying just from the high temperature let alone the chemicals in their body. All in all saccharin in moderation will do your body no harm at all and is a completely natural item.

Nutrasweet is not natural. It was pushed through the testing, has been found to cause migraines, seizures, and a large number of people have other allergic reactions to it some severe enough that they have to be hospitalized. It is banned in more nations than any other sweetener. Some nations that make sodas actually have opened bottling companies in the US so that they can make a diet form of their soda to sell to the US consumer that contains Aspartame. Aspartame is in even things that are NOT diet, and there is no reason for it to be there. It actually inhibits the body's ability to burn fat by combining with fat cells and you only use the fat in your digestive track. That that is already in your body is much harder to lose. It has also been known to cause brain tumors in adults that drank it as teenagers.
All of this can be found on many sites on the web, so I will not even begin to try to prove it. There are hundreds of sites with this information.  The number of people on new medications have increased dramatically and the number of children diagnosed as ADHD since the inception of Aspartame, as well as the number of infants born with autism have all increased significantly. There are many Celebrities that are against the product and lobby for its removal. With Nutrasweet it breaks down into formaldehyde at body temperature, so there is no need to even have a fever, and it does not take any significant amount to cause the effects. To some people even the smallest sip can trigger major effects and damage. I personally know one person that a single sip will produce blisters throughout the entire inside of her mouth and throat and she has had to go to the hospital if she has had more than that.

Splenda (sucralose). This is one I know the least about. It has had a lot of research but the long term affects of it are not as severe and it is not banned in hardly any country. I do know that many people also have reactions to it, many can taste it and the affects tend to be diarhea, and irritable bowel syndrome as well as headaches and nausea. Some report sore throats after drinking it.

Stevia is completely natural and to do the research done has been minimal however there has been NO reported cases of ANY side effects at all. It has been being used in Bolivia for centuries without any known danger and other than sugar is one of the oldest known natural sweeteners in the world. It can even be bought as a plant and grown in your house. A corner of a leaf trimed from a plant and squeezed into your drink and then dropped in will be all you need to sweeten your drinks. I have seen it in several home gardening magazines.

Does that include eating lettuce that has E-coli in it?  The only real way you are totally safe these days is only eating
food that you have grown in your back yard.  Even many organic foods have problems in them and not as safe as they claim to be.
Personally, I don't eat any vegetables that I can't cook these days.  If I were to eat any fruit with the skin on it, I would make sure
it was super, duper cleaned before I ate it.  Do you really think you are safe eating raw fruits and vegetables and you don't know where
they were grown or whose hands have touched them?

Fast reply

I was shocked the other day after speaking to my local herbal/natural remedies store... Ive got an unmentionable who is hyperactive+, they informed me that low sugar drinks can make hyperactive or ADHD sufferers worse due to the Aspartame in the ingredients... and there was me thinking I was being kind by saving his teeth!

I just heard this on the news:

After careful studies by scientists, chemists and a guy named Al it has been determined that if you eat right, exercise and not smoke you will die anyway.
