I am actually invited to a Ground Hog's Day party Saturday eve (okay, so it's a day late, but I can deal). What do ya'll do for Ground Hog's Day? The guy throwing the party is an avowed atheist (but a very nice man) and doesn't celebrate Christmas (although his wife does, she's a Methodist) - and so he makes this big deal out of February 2nd every year. He pulls out all the stops, and his wife is cooking up snack food for days, for this annual shin-dig. Made me stop and wonder: Does anyone else actually do anything to celebrate Ground Hog's Day? Just curious. Sidenote: I really hope that there isn't six more weeks of Winter (or at least cold and snow). I've had about all I can handle. It's been way below zero where I live for a few weeks now (at night, and the day-time isn't much better). I and my doggies all are getting "cabin fever." I have never been so ready for Spring, I don't think. - Susan

We have groundhogs at the safari park here. I was unaware the day was celebrated, but I shall now be making the effort. Though it does seem an odd feast all in all, as there's not a lot of meat on a groundhog. And I have to break in to the park and get past the rhinos yet. E

Well no - people don't eat groundhogs to celebrate GroundHog's day. GroundHog's Day is a rather silly tradition in the U.S. (and maybe elsewhere, for all I know)- and in a little town called Punxsatawney, PA, every year (since I don't know when) the mayor picks a groundhog from a cage, and then sets it on the ground to see if it sees its own shadow... If it does see its shadow, there is an old wive's tale there will be six more weeks of Winter. If the groundhog doesn't see his/her shadow, Spring is (supposedly) on its way (which I hope is the case this year). Or maybe it's the other way around (I forget, actually). But - It's actually all kind of zany, and makes no sense, really, since nobody has ever explained how they can tell what the groundhog actually sees (his shadow, or not). But some people (especially in Punxsatawney, PA) apparently really get excited celebrating. - Susan

Actually, here in Canada, every self-respecting town has its own Groundhog. Gary, one of the more beloved ones, from Kingston, Ontario, died a few years ago. Yours, benji

I just love how Americans take stuff so literally and for real! Eating a groundhog? As if! Much too small, and cute in an overgrown rat sort of way... I should come and do the comedy circuit over there; I'd either be a major hit, or get hit majorly LOL! E

I am close to Punxsy, it's a big deal in my geography. It's a huge excuse for a drunken party. I've never gone to the celebration, but it gets a lot of media coverage. http://www.groundhog.org/

True, some days have excuses to not go to work, but as far as cultural or religious significance, no. Said another way, there are some days I just get to hang around the house a little longer.
