In a few months, I'll be going back to the US. When I go, I'll only be taking what I can put on the plane i.e. literally carry.  Looks like it'll be a guitar and amp, a disassembled computer minus monitor, some clothes, a few photos, and some knick-knacks.

Seems I've done this a few times in the past ten years or so.  Anyone else had to go through it?

Well I'm young so I've only recently had moves which required any more than a carload to fill.

I moved to Ireland for 6 months with 2 suitcases, a backpack and a carry-on bag.

When I moved to my first apt, I only had a room's worth of stuff, but bought furniture which required a truck when I moved back to MD.  But I put it all in storage and just rented a room for the time I lived there.

The move to Austin I finally hauled it all out and we needed a lot of truck space.

I don't want to ever give up my gorgeous bed or my 13 inch tv/dvd player, but sometimes life takes you down different paths.

In the last few months I've went from being happy with a few clothes, to filling up half of a fucking U-Haul.  That's America, for you..........consume, consume, consume.

Yes I've done the plane move. Halifax back home.. I had so much stuff I would have liked to take that in the end I left everything but a fewof my favorite clothes and a painting. Spread the rest around with the various friends I had over there. It was tough but I was glad to have a new start.

When I moved to Holland I sublet my London studio and sold all its contents to a friend and carried everthing I owned in a rucksack and slept on a friend's floor for a week until I got an appartment to rent. It was a good feeling walking out of one life and starting another.

I have not done the plane move, but when I moved to my current residence I left behind more than 3/4 of what I owned.  I went from filling a 33 foot truck to capacity to putting a small dent in a U-haul.  That was dramatic enough for me.

No question that 'starting over' can feel good.

It's starting over ... and over... and over...that has me down.  I desperately want to say 'the next one is it - never again.'

I've never moved.  I can imagine how it would fuck with my mind if I constantly had to uproot myself.  I don't need my stuff, but I do need the friends and family I have made here.

Last major move I did...loaded up the minivan, with everything it could carry. Car broke down in Kansas, left everything behind and arrived in Florida with only the shirt on my back and a smile. Smile must have worked because my friends took me in and fed me until I got a job and a car.

BTW...no more minivan for me. And that's what true friends are for...Family.

Having traveled all over Europe, Africa and the US has given me some experience in suitcase moves.   You learn to live with it and shop economically when you get to your new locaiton.   Lots of Luck

When I moved to Ireland, I always considered myself the travelling type.  Over the months, it became my home.  Then, I had to move back.

I was quite distraught- I was homesick, yet I was back home!  It took me quite awhile to sort it all out and I realized at that point that, while I would always be a traveller and want to find new places, I'd always need a "home base" to come back to and recharge.

THe only difficult part of moving to Austin was leaving my family and knowing I wasn't going to see them as often.  But it was the right choice for my life and where my partner and I needed to start our lives together.

"Thank God," said Teresa of Avila, "for the things I do not own." That quote comes to mind often as I ponder the sea of clutter in my apartment! Indeed, I've been thinking of moving (haven't done so since '97) just because it would make me pare down.

The closest I've come to a plane move was spending my junior year of college in England. I went over with two suitcases, and that's basically what I came back with. (I cheated a little and shipped home my notebooks.) I couldn't believe how much stuff I had to give away at the end of that year! It reallly brought home my ability to amass stuff.

I loved what LA said about feeling homesick at home after returning from Ireland. I felt the same way when I got back from England.

Good luck with your move, Stephan!

While my husband was in the miltary we moved several times, mostly to Asia and back to US. I learned to take what I really needed and brought back only what I took plus a few momentos. When you move around alot, you get good a picking up and going very quickly. It sucks but you get used to it. If we had some big items we would ship them before we left.

Yes, I had to 'simplify' when I moved out of Atlanta to be closer to my work.  I left quite a bit behind.

What I brought?

Well, the furniture of course.  Clothes.  The usual.

Then there was the erotic art (100 pieces total, 30 framed).  Couldn't live without that.  And the toys, two closets full.

Then there were the 4000 CD's.  Well, that takes up an entire bedroom.  And the bookshelves and the DVD's.

But I really did leave some unnecessary things behind.  Really.

Jeff

Yes I have went through it. When my ex husband and I split up I had two weeks worth of clothing and 5 dollars. I was visiting my mother in California and he was in Oregon. He kept all my baby's things, my things (some of them I had collected from childhood).

So, yes, I know what it is like to be in your shoes, the difference was that at I had an infant, no money, nothing to my name... everything i owned was out of state. If it had not been for my family I would have been homeless too... so the moral of my story? Be grateful for everything you have... but mostly be grateful for those you love and your health... these things are irreplaceable... the rest is just noise.

I'm quite used to moving. 21 and I've lived in *counts mentally* 20 or 21 places already. As an adult, all my moving has been done by train and bus, so I'm glad I haven't had more possessions than I can fit in a 36-inch soft-sided suitcase with rollers (affectionately called "Bubba"), or Bubba's replacement, a large backpack to hold my electronics, and a smaller bag for random things. The longest I've stayed in any one house is five years. The shortest was a couple of weeks. Quite frankly, I'm glad that for now, I'm somewhere where I sleep on a bed in a room all to myself.

I was a navy brat, so I grew up moving (domestically and/ or over seas) every two to three years.  Once I became an adult (at 16) I moved a number of times either locally or to other states.  Sometimes with what I could fit in my car.

In 97 I moved to New England from NW Florida.  I brought what I could fit in a two door acura integra.  I left a 1600sqft 3 br house complete with gas grill and wrought iron lawn furniture.  I moved with 500.00 cash and a prayer.  I only knew one person in the area and I didn't stay with him for very long, just a few weeks.  In the decade since coming here I've moved perhaps half a dozen times.  When I first got here I moved into a one room studio over someone's garage.  In October of 2005 I bought a 3300 sqft house and had to hire movers to move me into it.

I can totally relate to being tired of starting over.  As you get older it gets more difficult, too.  I still get wanderlust and when I'm fantasizing about winning a lottery I never play I think the first thing I'd do is travel.  Much like a previous poster, I would prefer to travel and have a home base to come back to, or multiple homes so I didn't have to travel so far to get back.  But that's fantasy for me at the moment.

When I was a juvenile delinquent I was notorious for hitting the highway with my thumb and a small pack.  I would not want to do that again at this stage of my life.

OP- know this. If you are moving in the US, chances are you can replace stuff cheap. Thrift stores, freecycle, people have more stuff then ever. the us needs to build 10 more ports over 10 years to handle all this stuff coming in. i got alot of stuff free or fire sale price when some else was moving.

What to pack: important papers. in fact i have mine in a fire box in case i need to run out of house fast in a fire.

aside from that- the only thing you really need is a computer and a bed.  ;-0~

Indeed. Also, if you live in a town that is anywhere near a college, you can get all the furniture you could ever want once the summer hits. The students don't want to lug that stuff back home so they toss it or give it away. Just make sure it doesn't come out of a frat house.
