Years of waiting to obtain Spanish citizenship for Darling Velez, 33, appeared to end with success a few months ago when her application was accepted, but she was shocked when the public registry rejected her name, El Mundo newspaper said on Friday.

Spanish law prohibits names which could expose a person to ridicule or do not clearly indicate gender.

Would you change your name to gain citizenship in another country?
And of course how stupid is this law?

In France you can only use classical or religious names so I've been told, I'm struggling to think of a name used in France that isn't one or the other so maybe its true.

Seems a bit OTT and i cann't help but think that most of the uncommon names are open for ridicule. What is next your hair cut, the way you speak, the cloths you ware and so on. There alway going to be something that some one can ridicule you for weather that be your name or some other aspect about you.

I think it's a bit over the top to rediculous to enforce such a law on somebody's name. However, should that person choose to change in order become more acclamated to that society/country they chose... it's their choice I guess. It doesn't change your name for most friends/family, they would still call you by your birth name... example...

My partner in my LT "vanilla" relationship, has changed his name when he became an American citizen, not due to any laws, but simply to become acclamated to a western society and feel more "American". Also, to avoid any particular problems given his birth name tends to stir up prejudice (he is originally from Morocco, first son, you can guess)... he sails through passport checks at the airport now

I find it sad, but, an unfortunate fact of life these days. However, I still call him by his birth name as well as many people who've known him a long time, it's the newer people he meets who call him by his new name (I do sometimes get confused and blow his cover so to speak... lol).

Given that, my name is pretty international, (Mary), if say I became a citizen of France or something, I'd adjust it to perhaps Marie... not a big stretch there though. lol
