Ok, if I sound stupid for asking... sorry. I love Stanley Kubrick... but...

Can someone please tell me what the HELL this movie is about?! I'm so freakin lost.

One line synopsis:

It's basically a scant look at the perverse and hedonistic sexual mores of the social elite.

The moral of the story is "Don't smoke pot with your spouse." Apparantly, confessions are made that may comprimise the relationship and cause the other partner to go out and look for trouble / interesting situations.

IMO it's about a man's inability to break past the madonna/whore complex in females and goes through a series of events which forces him to see how false those boundaries are.

Unfortunately it wasn't done very well- I'm sure in part due to Kubrick's death before the film was finished.

So why is every woman trying to jump the doctor's (Tom Cruise) bones? And even if the scene with the woman staged, how did she know to warn the doctor if she was in the weird ceremony when he came in, so there's no way she could've known who he was? And who was the guy that nodded to the doctor? And why is he in so much trouble for being there?

mnottertail -> RE: Eyes Wide Shut (1/16/2007 12:06:28 PM)

This is why I have my slaves watch the movie separately, before or after we watch it together, they lose track of what's going on when giving me head during the movie...........(but what is your excuse????? Laughs)

LOL,
Ron

LOL it's way too long since I saw it to remember those sorts of details (not to mention overusage of confusing pronouns).  As I said in my OR- this is the theme I feel the movie was trying to portray AND that I think it did a bad job of doing so.

It was a good flick about the inner darkness We all seek and satisfy within the delights of our suburban sanctuaries while denying any perversion or santctamoneous behaviour to be condemned by neigbors more perverse than our darkest dreams.

Actually it was just another vehicle for the couple after Tom got a taste of New Orlean's darkness ala Vampire A. N. Roquelaure

Granted, it's been a couple years since I've seen it....

One of the things I got out of it was concepts of fidelity and how complex relationships can be...although neither spouse was technically unfaithful, you had the male character physically being in these "near miss" situations...with the hooker, at that really odd ceremony thing, and probably a couple other examples I can't recall.   Then you had the wife confess that if that man she ran into (in the lobby of a hotel I think?) had just turned around, or whatever...that she would have left the husband and child and run off with him without a thought.  Was either unfaithful emotionally?   Who knows.  But there was a lot going on to consider.

uh ... what does Anne Rice have to do with Eyes Wide Shut?

DemonSadist -> RE: Eyes Wide Shut A. N. Roquelaure (1/16/2007 6:03:10 PM)

The sex was certainly the most boring thing in the film.
I figure it's about human arrogance and frailty. Cruise has his arrogance shattered by his wife's admission then he has it re affrimed by the prostitute, his moral frailty is tested with the daughter of the fancy dress shop. When he finds out all about the weird party he arrogantly assumes he'll be able to sneak in. He thinks he's walking in to it with his eyes wide open but they are actually wide shut. He's discovered and once again his arrogance is shattered. The key part of the film is Sydney Pollacks rationalisation about the events of the party and afterwards towards the end of the film. It's played so perfectly, Cruise wants to believe there's been no murder or anything more sinister than an orgy for the rich and the audience is drawn in with this comforatable lie too, to an extent at least I would say. Ok there's a whole load of Freudian psychoexual shit too, but you want to read the book Traumnovelle that the film was based on for that. the film is Kubrick examining human and social arrogance, power and the frailty of morals and systems again.
