LaMistressa -> RE: Local Community (1/20/2007 4:11:05 PM)
I've been active in the DC area for about five years. Overall I have had a very good experience, but I recognize that there are some people I just don't care for (and they probably feel the same about me), so I let them pass me by. But many of my closest friends have been people I have met at local parties and munches, and I am grateful for them.

I've gone to two munches, two different groups. I think it's safe to say that I will not be going to another munch.

Wish I was more involved in the local scene - have spent too much time in 1 tiny group. Wish me luck! -M

I have found that it is like anything else. Some parts are good, some bad. I found a few small groups I enjoy and decided that it was enough for me. My time is limited, so have to pick and choose. But find that I am happier in the smaller venue.

The local community where I am is pretty dismal, but I've met some great people by travelling to a nearby larger city. That seems to work pretty well. I just need to makeit down there more often.
I think having people that atleast understand where you are coming from is a great thing and it's a better way to learn then just ready and trying it out on your own.
I wouldn't say you have to be part of a community but there are definate advantages. Especially in the begining.
