In europe when a Bloodline ran out the firstborn always had the mothers last name especially in cases of the monarchy, or the husband took the wifes last name when they married. if they could do so in the middle ages  why can't we do so in the so called modern world?

I'm with Lashra on this...I hope the couple in California fight it with all their might and win...The double standard in this country is ludicrous. Notice I said "the couple." This is not just something she wants, but he wants it, too...More power to them and may the Force (of reason and justice) be with them.

Many countries didn't have surnames until Napoleonic times when Napoleon insisted on surnames for administrative reasons. For example in Holland there are many surnames that were created as a joke under the French occupation, however, their descendents have to suffer the indignity of being on the butt end of an ancestors joke such as Poepjes (Little shit), Piest (Piss), Rotmenson (Rotten people). Koedood (Dead Cow), Naaktgeboren (Born naked), Zondervan (No surname), Uiekruier (Onion crier)

Yeah, I read that in the paper today....amazing.

(Just another fine example of how women have the upper hand and how men are not treated fairly in society and truly what an uphill climb we still have to emancipate).

But I digress.
