I just wonder about this, particularly in my case. Do animals recognise what sex we are by our appearance, or are they operating on the smell of our hormonal make up?

An example; a friend of my ex had a male dog. He always went crazy at any man who came near the house, but was disinterested in or even friendly to women. First time I went there (in my old life), I got the full barking and snarling treatment. Second time (inbetween; hormones but unchanged appearance really), the poor thing was highly confused! Last time (new life) I got his standard response to women.

Anyone know for sure? I mean, thinking about it the other way around, and taking into account we dont have the same sense of smell, its only appearance that tells me if a dog/cat is a boy or a girl. Do animals get to know what a man and a woman looks like - ie, long hair = woman, short hair = man?

Status: offline 		I personally think it's by scent.  I mean, there are women that have short hair and women that have long hair, and a dog can't tell much from that.
 
My bigger dog isn't crazy about men till he gets to know them.  He acts different with men than women, but really from looking at the outside..with coats and all of that, you can't tell from sight that much difference in the two.
 
I guess the scent of a woman or a man can get to the dog long before telling by their looks alone.

Status: offline 		From what I've read its by scent. But with that said I also think its part of  the "vibs" a person gives off. A good example of this is a dog that used to run the neighborhood where my parents live. This dog hated women, he'd obviously been abused badly by one. No woman could get near him, except me. Why could I get near him? Well I think its because I wasn't afraid of him and I love dogs. So I approached him slowly and confidently, reached out with my hand and petted him. From that moment on I never had a problem with the dog, but no other woman could go near him or he'd try to bite them.

Animals are intelligent and their senses are very keen. One of those senses is the ability to tell when someone is afraid or when someone doesn't like them. You've heard the expression "to smell fear", I think animals can do that..literally. Our bodies give off different chemicals which have different smells hence their ability to identify our sex and most likely what emotion we are feeling at the moment we meet them.

And they say animals are "dumb", don't you believe it.

Status: offline 		While at the office yesterday I saw that same show.  I believe it is pheromones that they smell.
Why else would places try to hard to hawk them to us every chance they get?

There was some case where the dog bit the guy going through a sex change operation.  Through the hormonal process.  Anyway, the guy came to the house...dog sniffed.  Guy sat down dressed as a woman and dog attacked.
Animal control said something to the effect of the dog was confused so he bit trying to figure out more.

But what the heck, I'll answer.

I strongly believe that my four-legged housemate knew I was pregnant before I did. I was twelve weeks along before I even knew it and for those twelve weeks he was literally at my side, making physical contact as much as possible every moment that I spent at home. I didnt understand what was going on. I wondered if he was ill, but he had no other symptoms. There was a lot of stress in the house between the father of said unmentionable and myself, so I chalked it up to that before I knew I was actually pregnant. That theory was blown when the behavior continued even after that person moved out of the house.

So, I do believe they are very sensitive to certain hormones.

Status: offline 		this slave has worked with and trained many animals throughout her life.  the thing with dogs is, they don't rely on their eyes, and frankly, don't care about the length of something's hair or what sort of gender specific clothing you wear.  they rely on their sense of smell, which is something like a gazillion times more sensitive than ours.  Dogs can smell things like cancer or fear, and all they need is one of your microscopic dead skin cells and they can track you...if so trained.

Status: offline 		Don't know how dogs or cats identify sex in people but I've seen it enough to know some of them do respond differently to men than to women. An interesting note to justheather's dog knowing she was preggers is the study from a couple of years ago that dogs could be trained to detect bladder cancer in people by smell. I think its likely that dogs have as rich a connection to their environment through their sense of smell as people do by way of sight.

My favorite are the following.

They can sense when an epileptic is entering the aura phase minutes to hours prior to having the actual siezure.

Dogs have a lot of senses and abilities which people have no real ability to figure out empirically.
