Different colours;
Red - female dominant
Pink - female switch/sub/slave
Dark blue - male dominant
Light blue - male switch/sub/slave
and from what I remember, black for couples (though not sure on that one)
Avatar - click "my profile" on the forum page (not the home page). Select "show avatar as profile pic" (near the bottom, and yes it doesnt seem to make sense I know!). As long as your pic has been approved (this takes 3-4 days from when you put it on your main profile) it will show up as your avatar on the fora.
And as a pre-emptive; the "vanilla" thing is to do with how many posts you have made, not a comment about you personally!
