Sports is something that has been with our species since the dawn of civilization. The Olympics has its roots in ancient Greece over 2,500 years ago. Winning and losing meant so much back then that cheating was acceptable.
In the Mayan civilization, they played a game believed to be similar to Soccer. But the loser would be killed.
The competitive drive that seems to be a central part of human nature fuels everything from our wars, our economies, our politics and elections, our communities, and our sports.
