Rule -> Girl in trouble (1/8/2007 3:26:30 PM)

Twenty minutes ago, at midnight, I heard a girl cry for help. So I opened my 14th floor window and heard her again  crying for help and saying something else I could not understand. There is a hard wind here at the moment, so I could not determine her location.
I put on my boots and went outside in my night clothes and a coat that I was already wearing (no heating). In the elevator and down in the hall I recruited two tough guys, as I am not that tough myself. We went outside but could not find her. Back at my floor a neighbour told me he had just seen a girl crying and making a phone call in the elevator hall and in the elevator, not at all cheerful as she usually is. So we guess that she was the girl that cried for help, but I do not know what happened to her exactly, though it is a fair guess that she was attacked.

This has shaken me. Especially frustrating is having been aware of the plight but not having been able to do anything about it.

I can understand you would be shaken, and frustrated Rule - but you did what you could and went to see if you could help. That counts for a lot.

Incidentally, we had a news report tonight of a guy who went to help a girl being abused outside a pub in Coventry. He got stabbed five times for his trouble and he said in the report he'd do it again, because thats what human beings do. I dont tell you this to scare you or to belittle what you did Rule, but to illustrate that decent human beings do this sort of thing without regret, and you ought not to have too many regrets here, because you demonstrated the qualities of a true human being regardless of how it turned out.

All too many people would have done nothing.

Thank you for making such an effort. Know you did the right thing - and that is so important in life.

Ummm, did you post this right away ? The time was 15:26, and I believe that is reported in Pacific time. That's GMT-8 or 9. Doesn't seem to work out. Unless you are in Russia or something.

Anyway, hopefully she's alright.

About 20 years ago I saw a Woman getting dragged into a van which then sped away. The way the traffic was I could not follow, just couldn't get there. It was a very busy intersection that I was heading into and they were heading out of. Mind you this is before cellphones. In one of the extremely rare times I have called the police, all I could give was a description and a partial plate #.

If you want to play hero, take tools. Tough guys might not be enough. Personally to avoid big trouble I have this Chevy 350 camshaft. The gear teeth on the end make quite an impression when you brain someone with it. You gotta watch what you walk into, and if the perps have a gun, it changes things in a hurry.

But that and my ¾" pipe bender are still effective to some degree, they are too heavy to block. They also have an interesting effect on parts of the body up against a hard object, such as the grip of a handgun. Makes a real nice mess.

One thing to remember if you bring those tools to a scene like that, don't hit them in the face. There are two reasons, first of all they expect it, and you might just kill them and you don't want that. If they get in your home, whackem by all means, but not out in the street.

Last year, a gang of Black youths were messing with some friends of ours nearby, the phone rang. I got some muscle and my car as well as my neighbor's truck pulled up. Getting in the car my buddy sees the camshaft and says "No". I said whaddya mean no ? One of those MFs is going to need knee surgery. He probably would've shit his pants if I took a gun.

The locals have informed us that we were seen, and there has been no trouble since, see they ran. Just proves that bullies and gangs don't like to take the chance of losing.

Rule number one, take weapons to something like that, and use them immediately. You are not there for a debate.
