My best advice would be never to scrimp on the basics. Suuuuure, grab the electric violet eyeshadow from Maybelline or Jane. Grab that brand spankin new color you're not too sure you really want from CoverGirl. But your everyday foundation, blush, eyeshadow and mascara? Go for the good stuff. Go for non-comodegenic (wont clog pores), hypo-allergenic, high quality color. Same for your moisturiser and makeup remover. A good facial cleanser will save you hours of annoyance.

Skincare reccomendations:
Nars - hydrating freshening lotion (high end)
Nars -  hydrating moisture cream (high end)
Clinique - Dramatically different moisturiser (mid range)
Biotherm - Biosource softening lotion (mid to low range)

Mascara:
M.A.C. X-lash (oh. my. god. So great. lots of shades, doesnt clup, roughly the same price as L'oreal)
Nars waterproof mascara (wont dry out your lashes, doesnt clump, and comes off easy with remover... not before. Seriously, I've gone swimming in this stuff)

Blush:
Nars - Orgasm (gorgeous peachy pink, with a subtle gold shimmer. Looks beautiful on virtually everyone, never clownish. Plus its fun to tell people you have orgasm all over your face)
Nars - Angelika (Shimmery cotton candy color, apply VERY VERY lightly!!!!)
Stila - Convertable color in Gerbera (peachy cream, can be used all over, careful with this one, it goes on very bright)

Eyeshadow
Nars - Jezebelle (duo with a pale matte purple, and a rich deep mahogany shimmer. works on all eyecolors, just depends how you blend)
Stila - Kitten (peachy pink champagne type shimmer, works on EVERYONE, and can be used as a wonderful highlighter)
Nars - Savage (deep aged gold cream. It's a gorgeous base color, and helps everything blend)
Nars - Bohemian Gold (Duo with a subtle taupe shimmer, and an irridescent orange/pink. It's great for a subtle day look that wont smudge all over your face)

As for general tips: When applying blush, do so with a large brush and remember to smile.
Get the inner lashes with the mascara as well, it helps to pop them open.
A subtle gloss is much more attractive than the gloppy look.
Art brushes are not only waaaaaaaaaaay cheaper than makeup brushes, they hold up longer, and work better. Especially for eyeliner.
To open your eyes up: Take a thin brush with black cream liner. Draw your lid flat, and keep the brush as close to the lashline as possible, while applying a thin even line across the lid. Release the lid, and add slightly more liner on the outer third of the lids. Use Audrey Hepburn ala Breakfast at Tiffany's  for reference.
Always have cotton pads and makeup remover on hand. Once said things are on hand... Have fun!

Oh, and no, I don't work for Nars lol, I'm just in love with their stuff. I can put it on first thing in the morning, and it will stay gorgeous, shimmery and in its damn place throughout all my running around, sessions, jujitsu class, and nightshift.

My favorite "can't do without it" cosmetic item:  Vaseline. I don't know what I'd do if they stopped making Vaseline. I put it on my lips at night (to keep them soft), and my nails (cuticles), and sometimes even just rub it into my skin. It's a miracle invention, I think - because the effects are almost immediate, as far as softening and also healing any scratches, etc.

There used to be in the Sunday paper, a column called "Hints by Heloise".
I was a young teen and read about Vaseline petroleum jelly, any brand will do I guess.

The tip was to apply liberally on feet (I massage it in - all over my toes, in between, everywhere on and around my feet) AFTER you have taken your shower/bath.  Then put on a pair of white cotton socks and wake up w/ such soft feet!

Honestly I wouldn't waste 4 bucks on a purley cosmetic thing like teeth bleeching or whitening strips. I brush my teeth twice a day and sure they're not movie star white, but they suit me just fine. They're clean, and they do not look nasty, their not perly white, but that's just fine. I rather spend the money on something else. Something I can use, and is not purely cosemetics.

Whiter Teeth: With all of the teeth whitening kits on the market today, I cannot imagine why anyone would have to have yellow teeth. I do consider this somewhat of a "cosmetic item". Of course one could go to a dental office and spend $600 having their teeth whitened, and dental offices can sometimes go up to ten shades lighter on one's teeth in one sitting (or so I've heard) But -

Rembrandt makes a product called "Two Hour White" that will whiten your teeth in two hours (using gel bleach) as much as it would take those strip-thingys people use for 14 days or so, and get the same (or an even bigger) shade difference. It only costs $20, and is available at most drug-stores. I also try to use a whitening tooth paste daily. I think yellow teeth are aging to a person.

A quick man's perspective....less is always more.  Have gone out with  women that if they have pressed their face against one of my white dress shirts I could see  a "make-up" mirror of their face on shirt...gross!( Sold one shirt for ten thousand dollar on ebay...said it was a new "Shroud of Turin")

Anywhoo apply some dick paint...fluff up that cum catchin' hair...and go nuts.

Yes.. and the older we get.. less indeed IS more.  I also don't find the powdered foundations to transfer (when applied properly-which is 'sparingly').  A poll was done about women.  When a woman asks for your opinion.. it showed that 65% actually wanted to hear the truth.

The other reason I started this thread was  from a memory I had of a cross dresser I knew.  One day I gave him a sizing page out of a Penny's Catalog.  I had been browsing and when I came upon it.. I just spontaneously ripped it out for him. I had no idea why I did... but when I gave it to him he cried.  He said he had been looking for something like that!!!!!  So I began to wonder, how many CD's just starting out need this info that we are sharing that are perhaps a bit shy to ask.  The are also makeup techniques exclusive to the male cross dressing community that are welcome to be shared here. :)

I would just like to add that there are make-up lines designed for men to make them look masculine. Hollywood has been doing this for years, and it just recently became a trend among the "metrasexual" male population.

I'm also of the "less is more" school of thought.

For skin care i use a microdermabrasion at least 4 times a week ( i've used marykay, oil of olay and susan lucci brands with pretty much the same results oil of olay is the least expensive) and a  3 in 1 cleanser and moisturizer daily.

A helpful little hint for the occasional blemish- cut a piece of tomato and dab the blemish several times through out the day, it works wonders.

During the day all i wear is a little  eye lining pencil, and generally only wear the "works" when i'm going out.

I use a depillatory  for intimate hair removal, but have also found that it works great on the eye brows.  The product i use is called magic shave. Its a powder made for a black mans facial hair.  I make a paste as directed then use a craft size paint brush to paint it on. It works beautifully, without the irritation of waxing, or the tedium of plucking. It's very important however, to follow the time instructions or there will be irritation...also...when removing, do so gently...blotting with a lukewarm wet washcloth or cotton pad.  Rubbing will really irritate the skin.

When i wear foundation i also use marykay, to me it's light and non pore clogging. I have the best results when i use a damp make up sponge to apply it.

As a blusher, i use face powder designed for black women, it gives me that glow in a more natural looking way, and seems to blend with my coloring more than the pinks reds or rose colors.

My general practice is to spend 10 minutes applying makeup, then spending 5 minutes more blending and removing most of what i've put on.

One of the highest compliments i ever received was when i was on a weekend away with my then Dom SO , while he watched me applying my makeup, he stated "wow...you're wearing make up...special occasion?"  I laughed as i told him that i always wore it when we were together..."you just don't know it's there"

I posted this in  another thread a while back, but thought it  also fit here as a "beauty tip" but after you've dyed your hair, if you have had any drips or smudges of hair color on your skin, nail polish remover takes it right off.

Ahhhhhh, makeup. Something I am an expert in. As others have said, less is more, especially the older we get. Also, what looked good on me when I was 17, didn't at 27 or 37 and won't at 47. One of my biggest pet peeves is women that get into makeup ruts. A 40 year old woman still wearing blue eye shadow and black eyeliner....ick. Gotta keep changing your makeup and your hairstyles people.

Everyone has their favourite makeup application tips so I am going to go a bit against the grain. Except.......if you feel the need to wear foundation, please please PLEASE match your skin tone! The orange mask look does not look good on anyone! Plus, wear as little foundation as you possibly can, it doesn't look good on your collars either.
If you do have wrinkles, avoid powdery products. Especially eye shadows. It only accentuates the crepey wrinkly stuff. Also be careful of the heavy creamy stuff as it tends to collect in the creases.
Black eye liner is usually a bad idea for anyone at any age.

I agree with the teeth thing. Icky yellowed teeth just are nasty.

Here is what I was taught and so far its proven true. The best makeup you can possibly wear is healthy skin. You can wear hundreds of dollars of product but if the skin your putting it on is shit, it isn't going to matter. Smoking is horrible for your skin, it shows on your face and its not too pretty on the teeth either. Drink LOTS of water!! Eat well, sugar, and processed foods show in ways other than a waistline. Fruits and veggies really do help with that healthy glow. Raw nuts and avacados give you the essential oils and fats your skin needs. SUN SCREEN!! It should be worn every single day.

Another thing, don't ignore your hands. It's surprising how many people notice them, especially if you are like me and wear lots of weird and interesting jewelry. You don't have to wear polish but well manicured, and moisturized is a good thing. Snaggy dirty nails are like icky teeth.......gross.

The best advice, goes directly against the conventional wisdom.

I used to mix and match, thinking I was getting the best from each manufacturer. I now use Smashbox almost exclusively, and like the results much better.

I like the results from using Mary Kay's Timewise line, the 3-in-1 cleanser followed up by Age Defying Moisturizer.

P.S.  I usually have oily skin, but I love their moisturizer, a little goes a long way.  I use it on my elbows, knees and any leftover on my hands I wipe off on my hair, lol.
