Hello E/everyone...

So I open the newspaper this morning and scan the front page headlines and I see that the city leaders of New Orleans are discussing a curfew to stem the tide of murders that have happened since New Years. Now I'm sure some of Y/you are wondering how many murders have happened in New Orleans since New Year's Eve? At last check, during the first three days of the New Year, there were 7 murders and still more stacking up. Just earlier today, there was a shooting just outside My favorite restraunt/ hang out spot. The shooting was so fresh, I could clearly see a blood trail going down the sidewalk.

So this leads to a question on my part: How can the tide of violence be stopped? Here are the facts:

The New Orleans PD is woefully understaffed and demoralized. Pre-Hurricane Katrina, the Police had 1,614 officers on duty. Post Katrina, we have 1,428 officers on staff. Its so bad, there are radio advertisements begging people to join the police force. Moreover, the police (since Katrina) have been accused of everything from abuse of power to outright wanton murder. So, naturally, the NOPD have a very sensitive relationship with the District Attorney.
The people of New Orleans are frustrated at the lack of leadership by our (note the sarcasm, here) Honorable Governor Kathleen Blanco and our Mayor, Ray Nagin. Before Hurricane Katrina, the Mayor wasn't exactly a popular figure and after Katrina, both Mayor and Governor were hated by the people. Nagin has been pointing the finger at everyone else for the city's problems, but he hasn't realized that the problems within New Orleans are his own doing. Same goes for Kathleen Blanco.

The city leaders are proposing multiple possible solutions to the problems besieging this city, but the results don't seem to be very effective.

Funny, when I got out of the Nevy at 24 years of age I tried to get on the Fire and Police Dept's in Boston but couldn't because of "Affirmative Action." and now they're advertising on the radio for those jobs?
Sorry but myself personally I have no sympathy after the way I was treated in the 1970's.
I did all the right things and I couldn't get a job on the Fire or Police.

To be honest, I think only the people of New Orleans can fix the violence problem. They have to CARE. Don't just post neighborhood watch signs and stickers but DO the watch. Don't just complain but get out and find out what it is you can do. And DON"T relay on someone esle to solve these problems for you, it ain't gonna happen unless enough people care and make an effort. Were al those released prisoners ever caught? Fear and terror are paralyzing emotions, but they can be used to prompt positive changes if done correctly. After all, who wants to have to live life constantly in fear? It's time for the leaders to step up and be leaders and to cast aside the pretenders that were suppose to be leaders. I remember watching and reading about the Governor and Mayor during Katrina and I was not impressed. But they managed to find another scap-goat to take responsibility for everything that happened. Well, back to the, question at hand, the only thing that will help is community involvement and time. Sucks that there is no quick and easy solution. Sorry I couldn't be more positive.

The police corruption even before Katrina was well documented, which is unfortunate since great strides had been made in recent years to clean it up.

One story in particular stands out in my mind, the murder of Kim Groves, which was quite heinous.

Lebeaux, I went back into the service (USCG) and retired and I met a few guys who were in the same boat as me.
That "Afirmative Action" stuff really fucked a lot of people over.
Funny thing is I could still do those jobs now @ 56 and a lot of guys in my position could but why should I?
It would require an apology and a VERY large check to motivate me to do something like that.
The "Affirmative Action" hires on the police in Boston were so bad that they had to be sent to remedial reading and writing courses at night because they couldn't even make out a proper police report!
Of course a radio newsman had to break that news as the city and state were trying to keep it quiet.
And none of them were veterans and a few even had police records that were "overlooked." And quite a few were fired and even sent to jail over the decades.
So much for social engineering.
I hear they're having trouble all over the country recruiting police and fire these days.
Burn baby burn, that's what I say.

Just because I'm a Brit doesn't mean I am going to refrain from offering an opinion. OK ?
Severe hurricane, failure of what it is claimed were known to be inadequate flood defenses, Inertia ie dont do much , at least at first, by the Federal authorities. Then what happens....?

Many in minority communities start killing, looting and generally behaving in a completely uncivilised way.
Why is that then ? Have I misunderstood or misinterpreted anything ?
If Police Officer A is corrupt and violent does that justify person B robbing or killing person C.?

It's good to see you're not bitter about not getting your way decades ago.
God knows the laws for affirmative action were put in place because justice and fairness abounds.
As for what the hell is going on in New Orleans... Education, living wage jobs, and order must be established, without brutality whenever possible by the leaders of that city. M
