I think part of the reason it got made was on David Lynch's rep...if I remember correctly, it wasn't too long after "The Elephant Man" came out that they made "Dune"...throw in Sting, an 80s music icon, in a role that is supposed to be titilating with it's homoerotic references and a young, very hot Kyle Mclachlan, and in theory you have a hit. I have never considered myself a sci-fi fan, yet for some reason, I have watched this movie about a bazillion times. I haven't read the books, have no desire to, so I know it's not the story. I guess it's a combination of the mid-80s production values, the cheesy dialogue and the cast, which is actually very impressive (in addition to those I've already mentioned...there's the pre-Star Trek NG Patrick Stewart, Richard Jordan, Brad Dourif, Jose, Ferrer, etc). the creepiness factor is pretty high, too, when you sit and absorb all the elements. it's a great movie to put on when you're cleaning the house or something else equally mundane..."send up a sonar probe immediately!" always gets a laugh in my household whether said on-screen or off. of course, it's full of some of the most completely lame movie moments ever, esp the worms, which are supposed to be terribly fearsome, but in the end just look like giant penises. at least to me they do.
