Hello slavejali,

Your allergy is your immune system having issues with "cat dander" which is the particles of hair and cat saliva which are in your air supply.

You can by homeopathic remedies for cat allergies which should work for you.  But as long as you have the cat you will need to take them.

I used to own a Birman cat.  They are one of the most lovely, friendly, passive cats in existence.  Some belief systems believe they contain the reincarnated souls of ancient Buddhist masters.  Not as trainable as a Maine Coon, which I have also owned, but you will have a wonderful life with it.

Good luck

Sinergy

Hi all you cat lovers out there,

Well Master got me this little kitten...well he didnt exactly give it to me. We were going to give it away to a friend for Christmas, anyways we went and picked it up yesterday. The reason we were going to give it away is beause I'm allergic to cats. I'm so allergic, I've ended up in hospital from it.Basically I've learned to just stay away from cats, don't expose myself to them etc..so I have been allergy free for years and years, probably decades.

So, we picked it up yesterday and I couldn't help it, I've fallen in love with it overnight. I've had it sitting on my lap and near my face and played with it heaps and not a sneeze or wheeze in sight.

So Master said...I can keep it. Anyways..my question is... I'm so in love with this kitten, its a birman, if anyone knows that breed. Do they have different fur than other cats, so I might actually not be allergic to it? Do you think 20 hours spent with the cat is long enough to tell if I was going to be allergic? Like in two days it wont suddenly hit me will it?

I really want to keep it so badly, my heart is all tied up in it, yet if I'm going to end up allergic, I don't want to break my heart having to find another home for it, cuz I've I'm so attached to it in 1 day, what if I have it for 3 and then have to give it away..it will be so devastating to me...

Any thoughts from cat or medical experts here?

Didn't post this in "health and safety" cuz it isnt a BDSM issue lol.

If you're going to pick a cat to have with allergies, that is the one to pick.

Other than other resources you've found, I'll just say to get an air purifier, vacuum and dust often, have someone else brush them often and look into food additives for yourself and the cat which can help lessen the issues.

But I do know from experience, the more you bathe the kitten, the easier it will be to bathe the cat it becomes; and bathing may help with those allergies.

This is very accurate. I had a 4 week old kitten that I hand fed and had to butt wash multiple times a day. I later ran into the adoptive parents that asked if I knew how they ended up with a swimming cat? Kitty would jump in the shower and groom herself and actually attempted to paddle in the bath tub a couple times.

LaTigress I totally simpathize. As I sit her now typing I have My dog that started it all and my 3 foster failures sleeping next to me on the sofa. 1100 sq with my lab, 3 small guys (under 30# combined)and the new foster that's over 100# and thinks she's a lap dog. I have to tell myself every morning when she licks my face that a 100# dog deserves better...it's becoming a mantra. Will keep you posted on how successful that is.

I've had good success with a product called "Allerpet".  I got it through my vet, I've never looked for it at a pet store.  Basically you dampen a washcloth, dab a bit of allerpet onto the cloth and go over your cats fur.   I've got several cats, I am only allergic to one and for some reason, only in the wintertime...

domiguy -> RE: Calling all cat and medical experts (12/26/2006 5:14:45 PM)

Although I didn't specify anything as such in my profile...Hard limits...Scat and cats....Vile little creatures with their horrible dander...Makes Domiguy turn into weak sub...eyes watering, shortness of breath...no strength...Me hates the lil' critters...but they are cute...and good luck to you., and your devil's spawn.

out.

I've got no advice about allergies because cats don't bother me.

But I will suggest that you keep in mind that the cute little kitten you have fallen in love with will just grow up to be a useless cat that will demand food and decorate your house with hairballs.

Annoying little critters; that's why I have 2 of them. [;)]

DomKen -> RE: Calling all cat and medical experts (12/27/2006 3:19:36 PM)

I am not allergic to cat dander, dog dander OTOH leaves me wishing for death. My brother is the opposite and we've found, since he has dogs and I have usually had cats, that bathing the animal and keeping the house clean alleviates almost all the problems. Having an 80# "lapdog" boxer drape herself over my lap is pretty sure to make me wonder if I remembered my Claritin that morning.

From what I understand though some people who avoid exposure to the material they are sensitive to for a long period may cease be sensitive to it. Of course excessive exposure to some things may cause a person to become allergic to that material, latex allergies can be like that.

Anyway after carefully studying the pictures of your kitten it isn't possible to be allergic to that cutie.[:)]

I used to have a gf that was allergic to "everything"...she was also in an Immunology PhD program...one of the profs in the hospital started her on desenstization therapy ---sub-cutaneous injections of very low concentrations of the allergin every two weeks...slowly ramping up the concentration...it took awhile but I know she has a dog now...

also you can spontaneously lose senstivity to allergins, when that particular white blood cell population dies out.

carolsea -> RE: Calling all cat and medical experts (12/27/2006 3:44:06 PM)

Oh she is ADORABLE!!!  I sure hope you're not allergic to her - surely she's a hypoallergenic cat!!  LOL

Beticat:  I have 5 cats who let me live with them, too!

theRose4U:  I had three 1-week-old orphan kittens that somebody left in my yard under a bush that I ended up dropper-feeding and butt cleaning for a couple of weeks.  Talk about developing a bond with them!!!  One didn't make it, but I have the other 2, a little solid black one (I have 3 black cats now!) and a himalayan mix that is so adorable.  It's been interesting to watch her over the 4 or so years, as the markings in her fur have moved around and the color spread on her body.  She started with just a little bit of brown on her face, and now it's like a mask.  She had a splotch of brown on her back that looked like a saddle, and now it's more like a blanket!

Fortunately, none of my kitties have caused allergy eruptions in me, though I am sensitive to lots of other things.  And sometimes they ALL sleep on the bed with me, and they all get up in my face from time to time.  What a rewarding time that was with these little babies... I had brought in a stray pregnant bob-tail kitty who had her babies in my closet on Mother's Day that year!  I finally got her to accept the orphans and nurse them for me by putting vanilla flavoring on their butts, noses, her own babies, and the mom's nose too.  That way they all smelled alike, and she finally nursed them all!  What a good mom she was!

Edited to add:  I forgot to mention that dropper-feeding 3 one-week-old kittens was quite a challenge - and they demanded feeding, burping, and washing every TWO hours!!  (fortunately that was the first week after I had quit my office job and stayed home to work!)
