Curious as to why some doms/me want to change the name of their sub/slave?

Thank you Sir. Yes, I had a specific dom in mind and he explained why he wanted to,however, I've heard this from other subs as well. I was wondering why, those that change the name of their subs, change it.

One reason a name change might be done is to signify ownership. This isn't uusually done with conventional pets but human pets better be bright enough to pick up on the change. Another reason to do so in the middle of a relationship is to mark the entry into a new level, upward or downward. Occasionally, in a casual play situation, I've numbered my new, transient, play partners so as not to have to go to the problem of learning their names

I like to include the slave girl in the choosing of her slave name. For example, I will take the etymological meaning of 4-5 names that I like and send those meanings to her (without the names). Then I will request that she chose 2 of those meanings and write a poem about what each meaning means for her. Then I will choose the poem that is the best and then the name that matches the topic becomes her slave name.

It is a Gorean custom for a Master to change a girls name. The name he gives her teaches her something and reminds her of it every time she is addressed by name. If a girl was really conceited the Master might name her turnip. If she was really shy he might name her brazen. It is also custom to change a girls name as she learns and grows in her slavery. This is the 3rd name the Owner has given me, each had their own significance at the time.

Renaming is not confined to BDSM either, there are many cultures where a person's name is changed as they go through the various rites of passage their culture has. So I would expect that when we see it in BDSM it is based on the practice they have heard about and liked in another culture.

I will sometimes change a sub's name. My reasoning is thus... She has to live in two worlds. She has to function in the vanilla world, with friends and a job and whatever. And then when she comes to me - on the phone, in IM or real-time - she enters a new world. Giving her a new name - what some call a slave-name - helps her move from the one world to the other. Just the mention of her slave-name will help to change her mind-set from vanilla to sub. It helps her to compartmentalise her life and prevent the one spilling over into the other, and it also helps her to transition between them. Most agree that it helps. Plus it is also a way of exerting power over her...

While I don't neccessarily compartmentalize my life, over time it became a smooth and natural transition just hearing it used.

My best friend is named Sally. When she began a relationship with the man who is now her Master she started using a nickname at his request because his ex wife is also named Sally. Together they considered different names and finally chose one that suited her well. My mentor started calling me an elegant slut..the name stuck and when Master collared me he called me His Elegant Slut..shortened to Elegant. Frankly, I have been begging him for a few years (yes, begging) him to change it to no avail.
