OK- I got my order of how to speak 51 languages. I'm trying to figure out which I want to try at.

If you could learn another language what would it be?

Does anyone here speak more then English?

I can understand Irish dialect; read and speak fluent Italian, read French but I am still having a hard time speaking it ( I can't quite get the words out right ). Once I have learned to speak French, I would like to move on to German, Spanish, and Japanese.

I can speak Mandarin and Taiwanese fluently and can speak enough Spanish to ask simple medical questions.

As which language to learn first depends on what you are wanting to accomplish. Certainly Spanish would be a good one to know based on our country’s demographics and location. If you are in business and sell goods Mandarin would be a good one to learn. If you love a certain country and want to spend a lot of time there then that language would be good.

I'm a native of the US, and I teach English here in Chile.  Over the past few years, I've become fluent in Spanish.  I used to speak Japanese fluently, though after six or seven years of almost no use, I've forgotten most of it.

I've found that in learning Spanish, Latin isn't overly complicated (I can decipher it passingly well.)  On top of that, Latin rooted languages (German, French, Italian, Portuguese, etc) wouldn't be overly complicated either.  It becomes more of a question of time and effort to memorize structure and vocabulary.

I suppose I'd like to learn Cantonese or Mandarin, if only because of the cultural and linguistical barriers between Eastern and Western cultures are fascinating - though I'm not sure how much of an opportunity I would have to make use of it.  Like my Japanese, I would end up forgetting a language that I can't use every day.

Voltare, good for you, you live in a beautiful country, lol...I am biased though being from there myself ;) I give you a lot of credit too on understanding Spanish they way it is spoken in Chile with all its slang and accent, different than in the rest of Latin America :)

After three years, I still need gretchen (my slave) to translate for me from time to time.  Depends on how many chelas we've had (beers - they almost never call it cerveza here.)

I can still understand and speak some German and Italian.   I failed miserably at Spanish (which is really strange but the local community spoke spanglish and the teacher didn't like that at all).  I had to learn a little greek, Arabic, Swahili, Amharic, Taigree - last 3 are african languages - It kinda helped when I watch Mel Gibson's Passion of the Christ because I understood much of what was being said without the sub titles (suprised me actually becasue it has been so long since I had to use any of them).

Fluent German, stuttering French, can make sense of written Dutch and have bits of Polish, Danish, Czech and Spanish, as well as a bit of Wessex Saxon.

I really should learn Italian as thats where we transport to/from, but I'm afraid I just cant be bothered these days. Being a Brit and knowing German and French makes me a freak enough over here too. Its useful when I'm travelling though - being able to pretend to be German and not be associated with my usually drunken, uncouth, ill behaved compatriots.

I heard on NPR the other day that Francophiles are second only to Anglophiles.   What is a worldly vamp like you doing in Anarctica?
