Today, Bristol-Myers Squibb, the pharmaceutical monolith that charges nearly $1,000 for a 30 day supply of one of its HIV/AIDS medications, is donating $1 to the National AIDS Fund for each person who simply visits their website and “virtually lights a candle.” The tally is over 995,000 now.

Please, please take a minute to “light a candle”:

I don't know where you saw that part about the tally but when I went to light the candle it said on the right above the corner (maximum of $100,000)

still better than nothing though

I lit a candle... just can't help but think it would be far more noble to lower the price of the meds instead?

To funny, So they got at least a million page views and good feeling PR and it cost them a 100000 dollars. Undoubtedly cheaper than the rate google charges for a click thru. This isn't giving it's clever marketing that is tax deductible.

Silly Jewel... Huge corporations act logically and compassionately at the same time? hehehe You're funny!

It's a nice gesture, ultimately uneffective though.

A WHOLE dollar WOW !@!

As harsh as it may sound, I'd rather see a shitload of people die before kotowing to something like this. Just to see the DRUG companies go broke after what they have done to us.

And call them what they are, DRUG companies.

songofeire, thank you for posting this.  The rest of you who carp and whine about how Bristol Myers isn't doing enough:

1.  They are a leader in reducing the price of AIDs drugs world wide and have granted patent-infringing "copycat" licenses to allow generic copies of their drugs.

2.  They are giving $100,000 of profit to the cause.  How much did you donate?

I intensely dislike the whiny know it alls who congregate in threads like this.  Its Christmas and most of you claim to be Christians--dare to show a little compassion?

"It's the same thing," he said.

Oh spare me already.

Relatively speaking, $100K to them is less than your freaking pocket change. And it is netting them bundles of PR.

And please... don't even get me started on Big Pharma.

Really?  Then why did they pay out a 670 MILLION dollar settlement in 2003 for illegally blocking other companies from releasing generic versions of BuSpar and Taxol?  On top of that, they were forced to pay out 839 MILLION dollars to shareholders after the 2000-2001 scandal involving channel stuffing and securities fraud.  They're a leader all right, a leader at getting caught trying to rip people off, including their own shareholders.

I'll wager I donated a higher percentage of my earnings to charity this year than BMS did.  Consider this for a moment; BMS paid their CEO $150 million in compensation in 2001.  To them, that $100,000 donation is like you or I tossing a quarter in the Salvation Army bucket after walking out of the mall.

What does compassion have to do with pointing out an obvious PR snow job?

I realize that BMS is a business and their primary goal is to make money.  I don't begrudge them that one iota.  They spend billions of dollars on R&D and they're entitled to reap the rewards from that effort.  However, the 'Light to Unite' campaign is nothing more than an attempt to convince the clueless teeming masses that BMS is going above and beyond to help when they're doing nothing of the sort.  Sadly, it appears to be working.

Stef:  Neither buspar nor Taxol are AIDs drugs.  Your examples may show BMS is not all good, but they are inopposite to the comment.  As for your charitable donation, bravo.  But you weren't one who chose to post a "look how nasty BMS is (including the moronic statement that it would be better for people to die than to "kowtow" to the "light a candle" website.

I was affiliated with a significant medical facility a few years ago.  A notorious gangster approached our institution, and asked if we would accept a $5,000,000 donation to name a wing of the hospital after his mother (who bore the same last name as he did).  There were several Board members who worried that accepting this donation was either some sort of acceptance of the donor and/or that having this infamous name on the institution's wall would "cheapen" the hospital system.  They fiddled and faddled, and the money went down the street to a rival institution.

Who was right?

BMS is no angel, and I'm not fooled for a moment by their campaign.  But I'm also not fooled by the idiots who post about how clever they are in "seeing thru" the PR campaign (because that takes such tremendous acumen) and then dismiss the donation.  A simple question, stef -- is it better for the world AIDs organization to have another $100,000 or not?

Who was right? The institution that decided not to accept the blood/dope/prostitution money, and let it walk down the street to the rival institution. Bravo to them!

To bottom-line people who don't give a damn about morals, I suppose that it's better for the organization to have another $100K.

Question for the "Emperor"... do you feel that you need to resort to name calling to get your point across?

Hiya Emperor,

I made my post becaue the original poster stated for each person who lights a candle(a dollar would be contributed) and then gave a total of close to a million. I was just pointing out the truth that there was a cap of $100,000 dollars.

I am glad the money is being given for this and I am also glad that close to a million people cared enough to take time to visit the site and light a candle. It shows how much people care and is something to take note of.

People should not just do things blindly , I knew when I clicked that no more money would get contributed but I just wanted to show I cared.

and Yes I know there are other probably better ways of showing I care also.
