teens are abusing this, the only cough syrup ingrediunt that actually works. if you use a cough syrup the "DM" kind, law makers....well this product might be controlled as pseudoephedrine.

a teen in LA took 24 tablets and died. it was on ktla news.

there also is a new pill silvia ?? that is sort like acid- currently legal. either way of gettting a buzz to me would be no fun. the California legislature is going to address the silvia.

i dont think the govt should regulate any further. your thoughts?

I miss the old vicks cough syrup that tasted like tar and was loaded with dextromethorophan (however you spell it)

I could be dead sick and still slide through a day of work.

a child willl spin around to get dizzy for fun,.

some try to pass out with a noose for the buzz

in the 60s some sniffed glue -paint, solvents.

the govt gets all silly on that- meanwhile yet ANOTHER e-coli outbreak at taco bell.

add to the bextra and neuorntin, 2 meds the fda rushed thru that should not have....

argh

I never found being dizzy fun...try being on some of the meds MY DOCTOR put me on talk about dizzy, nauseous, cold, hot....i got it all lol

while it is a sad ocurrence with the teenagers death, it would be ultimately the fault of his parents who had no idea what he was doing....this is ridicolous, why would a teen abuse these pills? Why didn't he get weed if he wanted to "feel high" so badly? stupid....

I don't know about ingredients, but I like the old school cough syrup that made you feel warm and sleepy. I can see why that would be bad for ya.

There have been many deaths from this new "fad". They do it because it is very effective, it's cheap and it's readily available. If a teen is caught with a bag of marijuana they are in deep trouble. If they are caught with cold pills they can justify it by saying they were sick.

You make speed from pseudoephedrine, this is something we've known for a long time.
When my nephew was a teenager living with me he used to love eating cough drops. The first two week's of living with me my entire supply of cough and cold products disappeared. It is nice having something on hand when you do come down with something.
In any event, I banned all cough products from the house and told him he had a substance abuse problem just waiting to happen. Well, he never made it on my watch. Now that he has moved out he has been in re-hab twice.
In any event, you really have to watch the kids nowadays if you don't want them to go down the wrong path in life.
They get bored and experiment. Usually not in good ways either.

I've recently learned...(from a ban in the city I live in) that they use propane to manufacture meth. Therefore all tanks are banned here.

I was confused when I went to the pharmacy and the Advil cold and sinus I was looking for wasn't on the shelf...they told me they can no longer sell it on the shelf, I had to get it behind the pharmacy counter..before you know it, they will be carding us for cough syrup.

Having experimented with many substances, both legal and otherwise in my youth, I can promise you that regulating or restricting access to any one substance will only drive youth to a different substance....In the far north of Canada, where recreational (and prescription) drugs are extremely hard to come by and cost an insane amount, what has happened is that the youth have discovered that if one sniffs enough gasoline one gets high (one also gets rather severe and irreversible brain damage, but that doesn't seem to impact their decision making process much). The world is full of things that will alter one's conciousness. I can remember sniffing PAM (don't bother trying it now, they changed the formula), benzine (still easily and legally available) and a shit load of other things, all of which I am sure were NOT good for me, but back then all that mattered was to escape.
Teens today are no less in need of escape than they have ever been, and they will find it wherever they can...more rules will not stop it, it will just divert money from programs where it will really do some good.

I work in cardiac intensive care. This drug and ones similar cause severe cardiac problems when abused. In the past year we have seen alot of young people coming in with OD's and problems from severe cardiomyopathies to cardiac arrests occur. Nothing seems so wrong to me to be coding a 21 year old and they die because of these drugs. Alot of these people that do survive these events end up needing a heart transplant but with the history of drug abuse it is extremely unlikely. So a young person ends up with congestive heart failure , pulmonary hypertension etc and dont live past 30's. Some regulation of these drugs has occured but more can be done.

I huffed freon once, in a rather non-consentual fashion, a semi-buddy let go a balloon full of it at me when I came out of a bathroom door in a bar..........

not something that I would try to go out of my way to do, but it was one time only interesting.

I had a double shooter of Makers Mark in a cuppa chamomile tea and two Nyquil gel caps not long ago. I can't say it was fun, not that I remember. I did get a great night's sleep!! I think.........

my 1st bf taught me never to touch home made stuff.

i recall in the 5th grade we seen all kinds of scare tactics movies. they actually had the oppisite effect- cos we thought they we exxagerrating.

many ODs- it isnt the substance that kills you, it is choking on your vomit.

i hate to see DM regulated. the high it does would not interest me.

After having recently watched some incredible stories on methamphetemines (previously, my opinion was "so what, people want to take drugs...fine by me...I did waaaaaaaaaaay more than my share and I turned out fairly decently"), and in the show they talked about not only how literally the entire recipe is off the shelf stuff...but that through chemical processes, they literally change the molecular structure of this stuff to give a hellacious buzz....and then they said the following:

99% of people who try it "just once" get hooked.
92% of people who attempt to get off the stuff, fail.
That it takes approx. 2+ years for the following to happen (meaning, if you do it for a couple weeks, and you're one of the lucky ones that somehow breaks free of it...this will still happen to you to some degree), your teeth actually start to liquify. You will lose your teeth by virtue.

Them are some stunningly gruesome stats.

Now I found that more than amazing, so I did some research on it.

A person who does meth every day (and no one that does it more than once, does it any less), within 3 years, they will have achieved a chemical penetration in their system such that within 3 more years, they will in fact lose or permanently damage ALL their teeth.

It isn't supposition that this "may" occur. It will occur to some level.

I had no idea this drug was so incredibly dangerous (and I'm not just talking about teeth now). It destroys people.

Do I think the government is overly cautious about over the counter drugs that these and other new kicks can be produced from?

Not at all.

Are you talking about Salvia Divinorum? If you are, it's not actually a pill... it's leaves you smoke like pot... It's legal here in Ontario... and most places I think... Kinda cool that there is a legal hulcinagin out there... I've tried it a few time.. but haven't gotten much off it... Supposidly the more you do it the better it works on you... I seen some people freak out on it though... Like this guy!

if one more person blames a parent for something that a older teenageers does Im goign to choke somone....there is only so much a parent can do.

Lets see...I have 5 kids living at home...i purchase my cold medicaones in bulk becasue it is cheaper...so lets see one of them decides tp be an ass an take half a package of cold medication and dies...it is my fault???

or do i need to by a safe the size of my walk in closet and lock the mouth wash, the cough medicaine, the cold medication, the cleaning products, the glue, the kerosene, the paint?? what can i safely keep out ?? i keep things out of the harms was and away from somone determined to do somethign stupid?

Kids can and do do the damnest things..!!!

em - i've done it all. The cold syrup was gross but i did get a nice buzz at catholic school one day and walked around running into doors wondering how the hell that happened. Tripping on acid in school isnt much fun either. Being stoned is the easiest.

The coricdin pills i tried for awhile too.... eh. I got closed lid visuals and that was abit odd but i've always been a hard core person so i didnt stick with it long.

The unfortunate problem with those that try to educate others against the dangers of drug use have never really experienced the dangers of drug use.

And when i was 15 smoking pot for like the 10th time - i came to the conclusion that - that was all horse shit OR i was just "better" then that. Nor have i ever been hooked on pot and really, i think it just makes you dumb.

Nor does doing herion once "make" you hooked. Doing something "once" does not make one physically or mentally dependent on anything else.

what it does so is open gateways. Once may lead to twice. And in a year or two it may lead to 3 times and 6 months down the road you might find yourself hooked.

Nor does doing "crack" just once get you hooked.

Unfortunetly, drugs effect everyone differently.

Yet alot of people who havent really been involved in the drug scene cant account for all the what if's, might coulds, or real possible out comes. They just like to sum it all up into one general lump sum. That doesnt actually teach anyone anything. Alot of people "beat" the program while others sit in AA all their life and others become toilet paper. Yeah, there are some things you can generalize but when it comes to a teenager or some one "new" to drugs - generalizing on all the what if's will not stop them. They're going to think you're full of shit when they see the big picture and at that moment - all your words about drug use will become not credible and they will go out and find their own answers.
