And mind you, I'm thankful but...someone's paying a LOT of money for all of us to have this forum, making software changes (I suspect the Mods work gratis/community effort kind of thing), paying for bandwith, server space, etc.

How come?

(And, again...thank you, whatever your reasons are).

Um.. I suspect their reasons are less than altruistic. They probable make more than enough money off selling advertising on the site. Or enough to cover costs at least, the rest could truly be dedication to the scene. *shrug*

That'd be easy to assume, I'm sure, but it's honestly only been in the last 15 or so months that they've put advertising on the thing.  I had another screen name here since probably 2002 or 3...and it was a no advertising site up until recently, so someone's been writing a check.

I was wondering about this same thing, in recent past. Whatever / whomever, a debt of gratitude to you. ~smiling~

The owners of this wonderful site are not, I assure you, making a profit off of the advertising.  They took on the advertising to assist in paying the bills for bandwidth and the like, which are far more than the average mortgage payment.

The owners began and continue to run the site as a source for education, discussion, and entertainment for the BDSM community.

M12;

If it's ok to call you that for short, I appreciate it very much.

Bandwidth is probably an issue, I have seen posts get replies so fast it is almost like a chatroom.

Server space is probably not an issue. You have X amount of pics, icons, GIFs, scripts whatever, alot of them stored only once. So sending you harddrives is probably not what you need.

The only thing that would help on paying the bandwidth would probably be money.

The way I see it I appreciate the site and want to see it continue. It would be good to at least break even. Of course on the web to break even is considered good almost.

Actually I would help if I could, but I have nothing significant to offer in that area.

Yep, I always assumed this new thing was an assist and no more.  But still, I ask...I make very good money, I'm in one of the few areas where if there's a recession, it pretty much won't be felt here (Seattle)  and I actually meet monthly with some executives, one of whom owns an ISP and I asked him recently what it would cost to run (something like say "a small craigslist" as an aside) and he said "easily in the 10's of thousands a month".  I couldn't afford that.

So, why are they so benevolent? (And again, I thank those who put this on profusely...it's wonderful).

It's beyond generous, and I'm constantly amazed at those (one recently comes to mind) who feel a need to extoll why CM is all FU...(that always floors me).

I'm in agreeance with everyone else who has posted so far. I had no idea a site like this would cost so much to run, so thankyou very much, for being so generous...
it's greatly appreciated.

Hmm a mystery! Sorta makes my ol’ sixties paranoia kick in… Some one(s) spending all that funding on me … I grew up being taught ,” there aint no such thing as a free lunch”…Sorry but its just me.. LOL, kind of like that old SiFi movie where the aliens come here all helpful, and it turns out there here to fatten us up to eat..Lol
Not that I believe that this is the case. But it just makes me wonder. I mean that is a great site and all, and I thank you who ever you are for running it!

And I'll add a thank you to them for that.

Actually, it's only been about 6 months I think that advertising has been on here, and it was because they (the powers that be) didn't have a bit of revenue on this site.  With 300,000 plus members, I would imagine the costs became highly prohibitive coming out of their own pockets...so I. for one, totally believe the altruism on their part.  Let's face it though, how long would you be paying, even if you could, for over a quarter of a million strangers bandwidth?  The ads are necessary( I believe they put out a message on the boards, if memory serves me right) to explain that in order to keep this site from going to a pay site, the ads were necessary to pay for costs.

By the way, I think they get more revenue when the ads are actually clicked, so please folks, click a banner now and then.  It will help the site, and again, the fact that they wanted to make a community for us I think speaks volumes....click those banners to help, and I am sure that if some wanted to, (and I know I'm speaking out of turn here, and therefore might be wrong), I'm sure that paypal could be arranged with support if a donation wanted to be made.

One thing about the ads:

I just saw one using a pic of a member here. Does this change anyone's thoughts on the ads? I'm thinking about if the person's pic was taken without permission.

As long as they're not using my photo, they have a decent shot at getting click throughs.
