midniteReign -> Need help with sub space speech!! (11/30/2006 3:24:24 PM)

For my final speech for communications class I decided to choose the topic of subspace, hopefully, to enlighten my classmates that there is more to BDSM than whips and chains.  I have found a vast amount of information here by reading conversation threads thus convincing me to join this site.  I have to present this speech next Tuesday.  I don't want to scare them off, so I am aiming at the lighter side of the subject, reaching subspace by sensation rather than pain.  Also, by going into subspace without being touched at all.  HELP!!

If your aim is to make bdsm more relatable to people, focus the discussion on the fact that subspace is just another form of altered consciousness- just like hypnosis, a runners high, a chocolate high, being in love, thrills of roller coasters, etc.  We all experience different states of ecstacy and happiness, we just happen to do it through ways which are defined as "kinky."

I see LA is looking at this so you are going to get some references............

However, remember when you were a carefree little kid and it was summer vacation and you got to go swimming  ALL day, and the sun was warm and you were happy and warm and without care or concerns an come home and eat the good soul food momma put out there before cholesterol and carcinogens and PCBs and mercury and .............and that tired empty warm satisfied feeling you got and went to bed in them nice clean linen sheets and sqiurmed in them and fell asleep and dreamed about butterflies and froggies and momma and spring and granma and --- and woke up 3 days later with drool all over your pillow and it was still perfect?

Just sayin'

my first (and only) experience with subspace was not in a scene

i had been in every kind of scene and just had never hit it... then one night at Lair deSade, after i was riding on a major emotional rollercoastrer and i was finally relaxed; Ma'am started running Her fingers through my hair and scratching my head and neck... i was gone for like 15-30 minutes and it terrified me because i had never let anybody have that much absolute control over me

BlueHnS -> RE: Need help with sub space speech!! (11/30/2006 5:01:57 PM)

Well damn! and here I was thinking that the topic meant what kind of speech does a sub use when in this space. I popped in to see if it there were more purrs or whimpers or moans ...
Good luck with the paper.

Fawne -> RE: Need help with sub space speech!! (11/30/2006 5:40:47 PM)

Wow! What school do you go to, please, in general, if you don't mind?
The only university I can think of offhand is the New School for Social Research in NYC.

They sure didn't teach that in my neck of the woods!

BTW, there doesn't seem to be any consensus on the experience of subspace. It differs in each individual and even with diff partners.
I am just learning this -

Make us proud. Get an A! [;)]

I think LA has a great approach with this one.

Community College Of Southern Nevada.  They are the only school that teaches deaf studies in the state of Nevada so that is where I ended up.  We got to pick our topics and I didn't want something simple like, why Coke is better than Pepsi.  I decided to take this opportunity to enlighten my fellow classmates.  Thanks to those who have replied and for your input.  I read some back posts about endorphins vs. adreline, was there ever a definate (scientifically backed) conclusion on that that perhaps I can use as a resource for my paper?

What specifically?  There are many studies on how adrenaline isn't the same chemical as endorphins.  There are many studies which describe the effects of adrenaline and the effects of endorphins.  There are many studies which explain how endorphin and adrenaline is triggered in the glands.

Are there serious studies showing that "kinky activities" will produce such chemicals and are what we interpret and label as "sub space?"  None that I know of.

midniteReign -> RE: Need help with sub space speech!! (12/14/2006 8:04:56 AM)

So the speech was ok, not great.  The teacher didn't think that I persuaded my class.  Well, such is life.  I still got 137 out of 150 which I don't feel is bad especially since the next highest score I am aware of is 136 (by the guy who spoke just before me about colleges).  Thanks again to everyone for their input.  :)

darksdesire -> RE: Need help with sub space speech!! (12/14/2006 8:17:07 AM)

I'm curious as to what kind of response you got from the class?  If you used mnottertails description (which I loved), I'd suspect you'd have converted your class to BDSM.

thetammyjo -> RE: Need help with sub space speech!! (12/14/2006 8:43:03 AM)

Sorry I didn't see your post earlier, midnightReign or I would have suggested many books including Geoff Mains "Urban Aboriginals," Toya's "Subspace: The Journey of a Submissive," Califia's "Sensuous Magic," and Hardy & Easton's "The New Bottoming Book".

midniteReign -> RE: Need help with sub space speech!! (12/14/2006 9:59:29 PM)

I wasn't trying to convert them (really...lol), I was trying to expand their minds to help them realize that it's not just all whips and chains.  I can see where it wasn't terribly clear on exactly what I was doing...I didn't much care...I just wanted to find a way to get away with doing a speech on bondage...lol

midniteReign -> RE: Need help with sub space speech!! (12/14/2006 10:01:01 PM)

Thanks anyway, it's the thought that counts...and I am so jealous of that bath tub!!!

AGORANTE -> RE: Need help with sub space speech!! (12/24/2006 4:42:55 PM)

All BDSM forum discussions of subspace are confusing because people use the term in at least two or three different ways. Those include:

  • The Melt Phenomenon - The Master does something or says something that signals to the subbie that he means to use her. She "melts". Her eyes get a little glazed. She becomes passive and accepting. She will submit willingly to being bound. A lot of subbies call this mood state "subspace" because this is how they typically experience submissive sex. They feel as if they have lost all will. Not every man can induce this kind of feeling in any particular woman. Submissive women treasure the man who can evoke this kind of response. This is probably a sexual arousal response.
  • The Pain Immune Phenomenon - Many subbies can enter a state of consciousness where they are not distressed by pain. Some refer to this as "converting pain to pleasure". Other speak of "floating" or "flying". Some women strongly desire to enter this state. For them it is the goal of a scene or a session. But at least some others try to avoid it because they know that while under they won't feel pain and they want the pain. Many people in BDSM speak of this phenomenon as being the result of endorphins, but that is almost certainly wrong. When a woman is put into this kind of "subspace" she can't talk (she drools and moans) and often she enters and exits it quickly. These are not the characteristics of endorphins. This state is similar to religious ecstasy or temporal lobe epilepsy.
  • The Afterglow Phenomenon - Many subbies speak of a good whipping as giving rise to feelings of well being. They feel calm and secure. This phenomenon is probably the result of endorphin release.

There are other phenomena that are branded "subspace" too but these I believe are the principal ones. The mamalian female sexual response is potentiated by pain (physical dominance) and hierarchy (social dominance). That's why subbies "melt" so much more strongly than vanilla women. Then if the Master is any good he can orchestrate a scene with ritual, and rythmic whipping that will give her essentially a religious experience. Finally she will will be left in state where her body rebounds from all the over stimulation.

LuckyAlbatross -> RE: Need help with sub space speech!! (12/24/2006 7:28:43 PM)

Agorante, I'm not sure what you're basing the idea that vanilla women don't "melt" like non-vanilla women?  Or why you're completely ignoring the male subspace reaction?

I go into subspace without any pain or whipping at all.  I don't need rituals or rhythm or a scene...and I have many "religious type experiences" on my own without anyone helping them along.

I'm seriously calling into question your premise that a person experiences subspace differently just because they happen to be non-vanilla.  Subspace, for me, is just another word for "alternate state of consciousness."
