Status: offline 		Pull in to any suburban neighbourhood and you're in. More than 80% of home wireless connections are unsecured. This doesn't mean you have access to their computers, just to their internet connection.

Also the lobbies of large hotels and many coffee frandchises like Starblechs have wireless service.

Status: offline 		At Best Buy, I once saw a handy little keychain gimmick that sported a single button and a few LEDs.  When you pushed the button, the device would search for a Wi-Fi connection, and communicate its findings back to you through the LEDs.

Status: offline 		just be advised, if someone see's you sitting in their neighbor hood, and call the police, it is a crime to access someone's home wireless internet system.  It is on the same level as stealing cable TV.  Buy a cup of coffee at starbucks or another coffee shop that has wi-fi....much cheaper in the long run.

http://www.wififreespot.com/  is another that will search by state.

Both found with a google search for "wi-fi access"

Depending on which model/version/driver rev/Windows OS you're using, you may be able to use a wonderful program called NetStumbler.  It's a great tool for sniffing out APs.

Status: offline 		Your laptop will tell you.  Just tell XP to search for available networks.  And yes, you do have access to any shared folders or printers on their network when you are connected.  That is why Mine is locked up tighter than a nun's puss.  It is completely impossible for anything but My own equipment to connect to My Wi-fi.

edit:  I would even add that all My folders on My computers are secured as well.  The most sensitive data is locked and hidden with a little program I have, and the permissions are all set on the other folder so that if you do not login as Me you are out of luck.

Status: offline 		hahahahahaha Im so cheap....at times I have used my laptop's wireless option, by connecting through my neighbor's connection, whether in the States or abroad...specially abroad where I do not have a permanent connection. It is true though, Starbucks has great wireless connection and you don't have to pay for it, and it is more enjoyable to surf while sipping your coffee.

i just bought a laptop from ebay. as a toy. teh desktop is 100x faster.

Status: offline 		lemme ask you this. im 20 feet from my moms phone which verizon will sell her dsl. my number they wont. they said the line is incapabale.

as you may recall- i did some posts on net neutrality.

i pleaded with verizon to string my line so it does dsl like the rest of teh block. they wont.

this forces me to pay fro cable access.  i dont watch cable as i prfer satilite.


teh utitlies- i guess you can say i have a contempt for. they know how to send a bill. but thats about it.

i told the rep- under the law ild need to get 50 residents to sign a petition for you to offer dsl. she said that isnt necessary since they are already serving my community.


how dumb is that?

I used to do it on my UNIX PC at work but I dont know how to do it either by Windows mouse pointing or opening a command prompt window and trying to use DOS direct.

This is an important point. My laptop frightened the life out of me when I first switched it on - I never intended to use it for internet as I have two home PCs here anyway. It did its start up routine, and then told me I was online, without it being asked to do anything of the sort.

The first time, it picked up a signal from heaven knows where - some young lady in the neighbourhood I think, but even looking at her pics (to find out who it was so as to warn them that their access was wide open), I didnt recognise her as a neighbour.

Now it picks up my neighbour's access (his PC is 6ft away from where I use the laptop), and again quite unbidden, downloads Microsoft updates via that, quite merrily. For all I know, it could be downloading lots of other stuff too, and for all my neighbour knows I could be downloading terrorist tips, child porn or anything - which presumably, were that the case, he would be held liable for?

Status: offline 		Lady Ellen it is true...when you are accessing those wireless connections, you are also prone to hackers and viruses from what I have heard....but I suppose if you have a good anti-virus type system, then it shouldn't have been much of a problem....as for the wireless connection coming on, you probably have a switch on the side (if its a Toshiba laptop it will be on the right side) which you can turn "on" or "off".....however, I am very curious....how did you access those "young lady's" photos??? did you get access to her files and archives??? how do you do that???

alot of good replies here. ok- i managed to get on for about an hour free. i bought this on ebay- no user manual. think pad t35 ?

Hi MK

That was the worrying thing really - it had no virus protection on it! It is a Toshiba as it happens so I'll look for that button.

My son is on the thing at the moment, but I seem to recall I went into "My network places" and that showed her PC, and I got in that way by double clicking on it, which opened all her files - not passworded or anything.
