This is a wild shot in the dark, but I may as well get things started - does it have to do with the word "midlothian?"

My aunt says that whoever wrote this riddle should be hanged.  She's sassy.  Tim, I think you ought not come by for Thanksgiving dinner.... She'll be wielding knives for carving turkeys and such... Just in case you were hoping to stop by...

No, not inheritance, but a good guess!

Your aunt's name isn't Mrs. Lovett, is it?

Well, I had to look that one up! So no...

It is, again, a quartet about quartets.

And the answer is ironic in its simplicity.

A Quartet Riddle:

From the Sword in the Stone to the Candle in the Wind,
from the Gold of the Rhine to the Twilight of the Gods,
from Richard II to Henry V,
from Henry VI to Richard III;

We are one word, in four syllables.

Repeating the riddle on this page for convenience.

sunshinemiss -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (11/18/2009 5:40:06 PM)

Sword in the Stone
Candle in the Wind,
Gold of the Rhine
Twilight of the Gods

Each has four words in it.

Something about the rhythm of it?  Maybe... something like the meter?  I know it isn't iambic pentameter... but it came to mind.

And my aunt is more like Auntie Mame, but she loved your answer!

You are perceptive! Yes, the writer in me had to compose it in poetic meter--anapests and amphibrachs, actually--but you're overthinking this.

Another hint, though...I am talking about literature and the arts.

I'm still going to play it safe, btw, and pass on Thanksgiving...

.

sunshinemiss -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (11/18/2009 7:03:08 PM)

Did I already ask if it has to do with the monarchy?

Or is it music?  Rhinegold (Wagner operas) Candle in the Wind being Elton John / Diana Spencer of whatever title,

The Henry's and Richard's are certainly monarchy and Diana of course...

Twilight of the Gods is from a Wagner opera too...

Maybe there are 4 acts in the plays?  4 parts to the operas?

*racking my brain here.

That's not directly it, no....but....

Now you're getting warm. These are ranges, so The Gold of the Rhine is at the beginning, and The Twilight of the Gods is at the end, and yes, that one's Wagner. With the parts in the middle....
quote:

Maybe this will help...Think Henry VI part 1...(Shakespeare), then......
And Richard II, then....
quote:

Candle in the Wind being Elton John / Diana Spencer of whatever title,

Wrong Candle in the Wind. What work starts with The Sword in the Stone and ends with The Candle in the Wind? What's in the middle? All together it's....

You're doing well. When you've filled in the above, you'll have the word that answers the riddle.

Quartet simplicity itself.

sunshinemiss -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (11/18/2009 8:53:41 PM)

Ok... well obviously Sword in the Stone is King Arthur... book by  TH White

From the Once and Future King...  First in the series... *Morte d'Arthur  (I read that in 8th grade... dang... Trying my  memory here, Tim)

Musicmystery -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (11/18/2009 8:55:25 PM)

Yes...The Once and Future King starts with The Sword in the Stone and ends with The Candle in the Wind.

And in the middle?

You're making good progress!

I am very impressed Tim... very, indeed.

Now, I'm going to need a little time... You're a hard act to follow (pun intended).  And it's bedtime for me.  Stop back tomorrow for the next episode...

God damn! Not only cute as a button, but sharp as a tack. This girl's got it goin' on!

sunshinemiss -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (11/19/2009 7:03:45 AM)

Well I can't seem to get the visuals to work... so....

1.  When I was in New York City, I couldn't find a cab, so I went to the subway with a token that I had.

2.  When in DC you want to see the greatest museum ever!
The Smithsonian is many places but one is best and better!

3.  We scrub and scrub and play in the water then  watch the water whirl.
Is it true what I'm told in Australia the water unwhirls?

4.  When my best friend went away.
I wrote a note that helps you say
Goodbye.

Wolf2Bear -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (11/19/2009 10:04:38 AM)

* looks at quartet, shakes head and walks away *
