Gotta go..... clues: the commonality is not a person, place, nor thing.
Hidden clues: the commonality is BIG, subtle, and hidden

ETA: Top-o'-the-page repeat:

Elvis Presley
Marilyn Monroe
Elizabeth Taylor
George Gershwin

So the commonality, a noun indicating a noun, "is not a person, place, nor thing," which is the definition of a noun.

So we're looking for a noun that isn't a noun.

We might have trouble.

Addiction issues?

It's an idea.

Ideas are things.

Freedom, Conviction, Imagination--this abstractions are all things, and all nouns.

"thing, n.
An entity, an idea, or a quality perceived, known, or thought to have its own existence."

MM: you're on the right track.... under that definition, I'll withdraw my hint that said, "the commonality is not a person, place nor thing."  Iwas thinking of "thing" as a rock.  To continue:  Many would say this is not an abstraction, but real.  Others deny the existence of this thing.  When you guess weight or addiction issues, you're concentrating on these people's lives..... that's kinda right, but the commonality is/was much more important in their lives than those simple (by contrast) issues.  BIG (again with the "BIG"?) clue for Sunday morning (should've been given yesterday) -  Many entertainers do NOT hide this commonality...... some even "use" it in their acts.

I was TOTALLY surprised when I stumbled across this quartet..........  For these four, you'd never guess it, just looking at the names (NO! Nothing about their names.) Well, maybe one is not as "hidden" as the other three and was included to help you figure it out.

Well, among other things apparently...

Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, the result of a merger in 1961 between two major Los Angeles hospitals, Cedars of Lebanon and Mount Sinai Home for the Incurables, had a roster of famous patients--including our foursome.

MM: You're cooler, waaaay cold except for one tiny bit of warm. Let me put it this way: Who would deny the existance of "Cedars-Sinai Medical Center"?

mnottertail -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (11/15/2009 12:18:02 PM)

Drug addicts

Well, they're all Jewish, but so are a lot of people.

Musicmystery -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (11/15/2009 12:44:26 PM)

Their portraits were all featured in an exhibition at the Warhol Museum, "Deadly Medicine: Creating the Master Race"

Are you getting at Holocaust denial?

New Quartet:

Liverpool, England
Keystone, South Dakota
New York City, 42nd and Madison
A bodhi tree near the River Neranjana

mnottertail -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (11/15/2009 1:02:43 PM)

Herman Hesse?

Musicmystery -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (11/15/2009 1:07:04 PM)

No...although there is a connection with the bodhi tree in one of his novels, and that would lead to part of the answer. It's a roundabout way to the commonality, though, which is not Hesse's novels per se (or Hesse himself).

So consider that a partial clue, if not a direction to follow for the overall commonality.

[And yes, it's another quartet about quartets...]

LanceHughes -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (11/15/2009 1:32:24 PM)

Buddha:
He is said to have achieved this aim [ending one's own suffering] while under a bodhi tree near the River Neranjana; the Four Noble Truths are a formulation of his understanding of the nature of "suffering."

Keystone, S.Dakota:
Four presidents are depicted on Mt.Rushmore

Liverpool, England
The four Beatles

----------------------

MM: I see you are still on that 4 quartets kick. LOL! But I'm confused.....
