Kalira -> They are just too funny (11/23/2006 8:24:53 AM)

For years I have tried to interest my teenager in some of the movies and books that I grew up with; one of the ones that I have tried repeatedly to get her to watch is The Outsiders; only to get a roll of the eyes and a 'mom, that movie is OLDDDDDDDDDD"

She comes home from school yesterday ranting and raving about a new book that she had just finished and how she could not wait for me to see the movie with her.

Lo and behold...she pulls out.... The Outsiders.

I think I will work on Yankee Doodle Dandy next [:)]

I got the same reaction from my son. After force-reading The Hobbit (Tolkien) to him, I next wanted to start The Lord Of The Rings.

Its booorrrinnggg!

Then the movies come out, and suddenly its the best thing since sliced bread!

I used to get that from my kids about boring old fogie music.

Until I forced them to endure a car ride with No Doubt, Madness, Garbage, Oingo Boingo, The B-52s, The Vandals, The Cult, and The Sex Pistols.

They did not have too much to say about the song "Too drunk to fuck" by the Descendants.  Then I said I used to go fishing with the lead guitarist (Frank Navetta) when I was in high school.

Success! I convinced my children to cross over to the Dark Side.

The weird thing is I listen to their music too.  Except I do draw the line at Japanese Anime (dunno the proper name for it) music.  A man has got to have some standards, and chipmunks on cocaine singing in a language I dont speak all that well doesnt do anything for me.

Just me, could be wrong, but there you go.

I was definitely an odd teenager... Should've been born at least two decades before.

LOL Sinergy. Mine has done that too; though I did not have to force her to listen to the music. Alot of the new music now-a-days that some of the teenagers listen to are just remakes of what we grew up with LOL. There are even a few that are sung the exact same way, just different singers.

My son enjoys the Beetles, Queen, classical music, Rage Against the Machine, anyone that sings songs making fun of GW, and other assorted funny stuff.

My daughter was exactly the same about the chronicles of narnia.
I figure what parents like is uncool to our kids but soon as the industry or their friends like something, its ok for them to like them too. [:D]

Beetles, Queen

I saw Queen in concert twice.

It was not quite the religious experience that Oingo Boingo at the Hollyweird Bowl on Halloween night was, but it ranked up there.

And the name is spelled the BEATLES!

"Hey folks here's the story 'bout Minnie the moocher..."

On a variable speed turntable, makes a nice set of tunes to fling my partner into a speaker on the dance floor...

My five and three year old girlies dance around the house to Godsmack, Rob Zombie, System of a Down, etc. etc. etc.
and then ten minutes later they're singing Disney princess songs.

Mark Twain reportedly said that when he was 14 he thought his father was an idiot. By the time he was t21, though, he thought his father was the wisest man he knew. He was amazed, he concluded, by how much the old man had learned in seven years! [:)]

MissyRane -> RE: They are just too funny (11/24/2006 1:40:42 AM)

You know what they say about mothers[:)]
4 years old:  My mom can do everything
8 years old: My mom knows a lot
12 years old: My mom doesn't understand anything
14 years old: Of course my mom doesn't know anything more about this than anything else
16 years old: My mom is so out of date
18 years old: My mom is so old that she doesn't even know what life really is about
25 years old: My mom might know what I should do.....
35 years old: We should talk to mom before we decide what to do
45 years old: I wonder what mom would think of this?
65 years old: I wish I could discuss this with mom....

So true!  I called my mother twice yesterday for help with thanksgiving cooking, since it's my first year away from home during the holidays and didn't want to spoil My Lord's dinner.  [;)]

MmakeMme -> RE: They are just too funny (11/24/2006 3:59:07 AM)

My daughter is just like me, God help her.

Yesterday after the meal, my four-year-old son, when it was his turn to tell everyone what he was thankful for, said "toilets!!!" After fifteen minutes of others saying "health, family, friends, faith, blah, blah, blah" the comedic effect was a knockout. ~chuckling~

LOL I tried to get my nephew, who LOVES Harry Potter, to read the Chronicles of Narnia....no go.

trannysub007 -> RE: They are just too funny (11/24/2006 7:51:02 AM)

my 16 yr old will only tolerate Queen's A Night at the Opera and a few Elton John songs. my 13 yr old and i listen to most of the same music - Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Scorpions, Disturbed, The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, and many more. Only when she's sleeping can i get away with a Bach double violin concerto, though. Same with older movies, like Caddyshack, or The Gods Must Be Crazy. The 13 yr old loves them, and the older one  - 'I won't even waste my time. It's old - that says enough.'  LOL
