I caught on Democracy Now with Amy Goodman that a 23 year old American of Iraniun descent was tasered by campus police 5 x for refusing to show a student ID in computer lab. A student caught some of it on video.

if you are not safe in an ivory tower librray where are u? i have been kicked out of SU, but at the time i was not a student and software licensing was a big issue. they would act snotty to me- fine. but they would not have tasered me. tho i might have left in a quicker less defiant manner.

I'm pretty amazed that university police would act like this. There is no reason to use a taser on someone who doesn't pose a physical threat--and there are going to be some repercussions for using the taser on him AFTER he was handcuffed. Yes, the guy was pissing them off, but that was child's play compared to what police officers see on the streets. They could have just cuffed him and carried him out.

Not really he was resisting arrest ... and they do taser for Not complying ... they are allowed to taser if they do not comply

L&M, I disagree, teach them a lesson. I think the Police and Security in this country are turning into pussys. They need to be much tougher! When I was young if a cop told you to move along while hanging around on a street corner and you didn't they'd just take out their billy club and crack you on the back of the legs. I saw that once so when they told me to move along I did. Plus they all knew my father who was a firefighter and if I wised-off to them I'd REALLY get it from him!

Even if it's true that there was no way to get him to comply without tasering him--and I doubt that--there's no justification for tasering him after he was already handcuffed. And they threatened to use the taser on someone else who asked for the officer's badge number. They're going to face consequences for that.

this was a student born in the USA. being LA- heads will roll on this one. 23 yr olds in general are cocky. im thinking if that happened in this small town- heads too would roll.. as the university would not want to alienate its big funders. IMO it could have been a free ride for the guy.... ie rodny king got millions and OJ is looking for teh real killer.

Why don't we see "a 23 year old student of German descent" or "Irish", "Italian" descent in the news?

Having never had the honor of being tasered, I'm wondering how difficult it would be to get up and walk after that while being cuffed. I tend to think that even if he wanted to comply physically he just couldn't. Input from someone who's experienced this would be helpful.

I've gotten shocked from an outlet and never reacted like that. It looked like his legs kicked out into the air almost over his head the last time they zapped him. It has to be a bit more extreme than that. edited to add...I just rewatched the video and yeah, his legs do kick up over his head right before they take him down the stairs.

It sounds like the school rent-a-cops were given their tasers without proper training -- a sadly common phenomenon in small police departments and private security firms. If the officer is told that the taser is a "magic wand" (and not by Hitachi) that eliminates all resistance without risk to anyone involved, then they're all too willing to use it in cases where it's unnecessary, such as on a subject who's already down and cuffed. In fact, the taser is 'safe' in the sense that it's much less harmful than shooting someone with an actual bullet. Or beating them over the head with a club. Or even than using irritant agents like pepper spray. But less harmful does not equal harmless, nor risk-free. Professional law-enforcement agencies give their officers careful explanation of what degree of threat a subject must pose before tasering is justified (eg. 'subject restrained, but still able to curse at you' is not sufficient,) but not all such agencies are as professional as they should be.
