Nella, you would be amazed at how you can lose your sweet and starch cravings if you cut out sugar, white flour, white pasta and potatoes, and keep saturated and trans fats to a minimum. That's basically the South Beach plan and it's very easy to follow. By eating healthy snacks, lots of veggies, good carbs (whole grain products and fruit), protein, low fat dairy products, and good oils (olive and canola oil, nuts, avacados), you can keep your blood sugar even throughout the day which is what prevents hunger and cravings. Almost everyone i know on the plan has also improved their blood pressure and blood chemistry. Hubby and i have both lost a lot of weight on the South Beach plan, and it's a way of eating you can do for a lifetime.

Good luck with your efforts.

edit--i meant to add that this is a great way to help prevent type 2 diabetes because it keeps you from having big swings in your blood sugar.

One thing that i think helps in weight loss is moral support.... if you have someone to commiserate with it is much easier. i used Weight Watchers to lose weight, but that is pretty expensive ($15 a week.... i only did it because my job was paying for it). Another group that is only $10 a year is TOPS, it stands for take off pounds sensibly. There's no diet to follow with TOPS, they just meet to support each other once a week. i don't know anything about Overeaters Anonymous, but i'm sure it is the same idea.

Just a suggestion, it worked for me.

There are free support boards online for every diet imagineable. I am a regular on the AOL South Beach support board and have gotten a lot of help and made a lot of friends there.

Here's my diet:

I eat when I'm hungry. If this means I don't eat a meal at it's usual time, so be it.

Here's what I eat:

Grilled peanut butter sandwiches.
Chips.
Soda. (I'm trying to focus more on the Sprites/7ups though)
Grilled cheese sandwiches.
Cheeseburgers.
Soft-boiled eggs.
Sausage.
Toast with cinammon and sugar on it. And butter. Mmm.. butter.
Turkey sandwiches.
More chips.
Ritz crackers.
Apples.
Cheese.

I still haven't managed to gain weight. I'm bone-thin at 6'1" / 120lb.

I think it might have something to do with the fact that I don't eat a lot. Dunno.

If I wanted to LOSE weight, I'd probably wait an hour after getting hungry to start eating, then I'd eat slow. I figure that should start shedding pounds.

Actually, here's my theory about why America is getting fatter: We grew up eating normal foods. You know, the stuff that isn't labeled "Non-fat/Low-fat/No-carb/low-carb/healthier" whatever crap. We grew up eating normal food. We traiined ourselves for decade(s) to eat certain foods in certain quantities.

Then we decided "Hey, you know what? Healthy would be a good thing! Maybe I should try out some low-fat foods!"

So we do. Then we discover that our bodies need more of that kind of food to provide us with the nourishment our bodies are used to. So we eat more. Thing is, now we're getting more of other kinds of nutrients, PLUS our bodies are getting used to larger quantities of food-mass. That carries over to the non-healthy foods we haven't switched to "healthy" types yet. So now we're eating larger quantities. And we get fat.

P.S. Don't fall into this "low-carb" idiocy. You'll be depriving yourself of very very necessary nutrients (and some people end up very sick because of it), and the moment you -stop- the "low-carb" thing, you'll gain all the weight back. "Low-carb" is just a "quick-fix" that hurts you in the long run. Try eating less and maybe getting a bit of exercise instead.

I for most the part agree with you about the new special foods and weight gain. We used to eat real foods but now everything is processed in this convenience-oriented world. I truly believe that the processed foods make us fat and are killing us with cancer. This would explain the facts I heard about before that trixs mentioned.

Oh! I really like this idea!

Personally I hate the diet word. I didn't go on a diet I changed my eating habits.

I cut my sugar intake by approx. 90% Cut way back on the fried foods. Go light on the carbs. And I eat a lot of salad. My fruits and veggies are fresh not canned. (my own personal preference) I also try to include milk in there some where. Studies have shown that it contains an enzyme that helps with weight loss. I don't like milk, so that part has been the hardest. But I have noticed when I avoid it, my weight loss has slowed down. Go figure.

I "try" to maintain eating like this for 4-5 days out of the week. And allow myself to splurge in some way at least 2 of the days. It keeps me from feeling deprived and gives me something to look forward to.

I walk to and from work. 20min. I walk around the building for 20min. And I use the exercise bike for 20min. For a total of 1 hour.

I would wish you luck, except it's not luck but determination that will get you where you want to be.

Take care,

That is so true. It's the trans fats (partially hydrogenated and hydrogenated) and all the various versions of sugar that are now added to the foods that are killing us. I've read several articles lately that say that trans fats are far worse for our health than saturated fats.

If you eat alot of fat food and dont gain weight it has littel do do whit the amount you eat. This is a misconseption, it is not the amount you eat it is what you eat. But some pepole are more lucky than others, some burn food in their body werry quikly and it do not become fat, others do not.

Hmmmmmmm... I wonder if the single common denominator is…it is mainly Americans who eat as much and as many processed foods as we do.  We are the ‘rich’ country…we can afford to purchase pre-prepared foods and foods that can sit on our shelves for months and never spoil.  These foods are known, generally, as foods VERY high in all the wrong carbohydrates.  I’m guessing it is that this ‘concept’ has not hit other countries to the degree it has hit ours.

I also wonder if Moleculor has considered the possibility of a tape-worm.

Stress, anxiety and lack of exercise is the culprit.

No Foods.
candy
potatoships
butter, cream esessive fat things.

Rule number 1 from someone who moonlights as a model {so I have had to cut things almost completly out at times} and who has spoken with more medical professionals than I can count, its counterproductive to say you CANNOT have certain foods. That psychologically makes you want them.  Its best to limit them and keep things in moderation that you want.

Just using your list of 'no-nos' I will give a few examples..

Candy - depending on what type, get the 'snack' size and put them in the freezer, behind everything so if you want 1, then yuo have to go through everything else.

Potatoe chips - thats an easy one.  Take 1 handfull out, put it in a bowl and put the rest away. Tell yuuorself, you ONLY get 1 handfull and enjoy each one. NEVER eat from a bag or a box. Pull out 1 portion [or buy them already in those individual portions] and put the rest away.  I do that with most things [ice creame, chips, cookies, pie, etc], its easy and it makes sence.

The 'excessive fat things' - look for healthier versions.  Some fat is GOOD for you. Just choose the right ones. "I can't Believe It's Not Butter" is my FAV when it comes to butter type spreads, it tastes delicious and they have more varieties and its healthier for you.

Remember diets do NOT work.  Period.  You have to change your way of thinking, how you prepare foods, etc.  It's as much mental, psychological and environmental a it is anything.  I want to fit into a small size 4 in the next few weeks and be more toned by the time my bf gets back home from being deployed; so what am I doing about it? I'm increasing my workouts [4 or 5 a week 30 to 45min each] including streatching; I am eating more fruits and vegies and low-fat dairy [it helps you to loose weight]; doing more crossstitch [you can't do that AND eat, otherwise you will get what you are working on dirty]; parking further away when I do shopping or work.

Don't go cold turkey on thing or just jump into the deep end, take things slowly so you don't go into shock and end up doing exactly what you didn't want to do in the first place.

Little things DO add up; but depriving yourself, it will backfire, trust me; most physicians will tell you the same thing. I have seen it happen more times than I have seen dead horse threads on here.

I highly recommend reading every page of this thread, where there is some solid information and awesome links all the way through:

I wonder if making statements as if they are true...makes them true?  I like research and information that backs stuff up...when looking to answer what I wonder.

Nice joke, posted earlier, though.
