Level -> Nicaragua bans all abortions (11/18/2006 9:11:24 AM)

As against abortion as I am, I disagree with this. If a woman's life is endangered, I support having abortion as a way to protect her.

Nicaraguan president signs abortion ban

By JOSEPH B. FRAZIER, Associated Press WriterSat Nov 18, 5:03 AM ET

President Enrique Bolanos signed a bill Friday banning abortion in all cases — including when a woman's life is endangered — despite opposition from doctors, women's rights groups and diplomats.

Presidential spokesman Lindolfo Mojarretz told The Associated Press that Bolanos signed the bill Friday and that it will become law when it appears in the official register on Saturday.

Previously, Nicaragua allowed abortions if three doctors certified that the woman's health was at risk. The law signed Friday eliminates that century-old exception.

Does this mean there'll be even more illegal aliens from Nicaragua?

BORAT -> RE: Nicaragua bans all abortions (11/18/2006 9:27:34 AM)

I very glad to see Nicaragua has joining adwanced countries like Kazakhstan.

Level I am not surprised, Nicaragua is a conservative and more religious society....but while I myself I am not in favor of abortion, I also think that abortions become necessary in case of a rape or when there are health issues involved for the woman...[&:] so here they have taken a step backwards....

Zensee -> RE: Nicaragua bans all abortions (11/19/2006 12:28:11 PM)

It's a matter between a woman and her womb, man.

defiantbadgirl -> RE: Nicaragua bans all abortions (11/19/2006 12:39:42 PM)

Abortion should definitely be allowed if the mother's life is in danger or if the fetus is severely deformed or has Down's syndrome. I wonder if the law forbids chemotherapy to cancer patients if they're pregnant.

Zensee, everyone is entitled to their views...I have my reasons for being against abortion, except in the cases I mentioned previously (rape and health issues)

MasterKalif -> RE: Nicaragua bans all abortions (11/19/2006 12:57:45 PM)

thats true....I hope the law in that country allows that for cancer patients!! That would be too much...and like popeye1250 says, maybe would increase Nicaraguans immigrating to the US and elsewhere...

Abortion can be an emotive subject........Personally I don't see Down's as a good reason for it. Most people wish for their children to be as perfect as is possible, me included.....but I wonder where the line would be drawn ....if you knew your child would be born blind or deaf or with dwarfism?

I know. Just expressing mine.

I think the Nicuraguans have gone far too far because ALL abortions are banned. I don't believe in abortion except for the reasons so often stated by others but I think banning abortion is a retrograde step, some women will seek out an abortion even if it puts their own life at risk so a ban is pointless. Far better to win an argument and persuade someone to your view, far better to fail than force ones beliefs on someone else.

I would have an abortion if there was anything wrong with the fetus that an operation couldn't fix after the birth. Why should the child be born  to suffer all of its life? In cases like that, it's cruel for the pregnancy not to be terminated. No matter how much a mother may want a child, it's the child that suffers. If I was in a bad car accident and was going to lose my arms or legs or be mentally retarded, I would prefer death to medical attention any day. Let me die!!

saskslave -> RE: Nicaragua bans all abortions (11/19/2006 9:25:38 PM)

This is going too far.  I don't like abortion, but a woman should be able to abort her pregnancy if her life is endangered.  Same goes for rape and incest.

Did they propose the same bill in North or South Dakota a little while ago?  I think it didn't pass.

I agree and no government/religion should have a law to tell her what she HAS to do. It is her body ultimately it should be her decision because it effects her life.

Or why should you have to put up with a child that isn't perfect?

Children who have been born with problems rarely wish they hadn't been born and are quite often in a better disposition than healthy children.

Why do you assume that children born with deformities, physical difficulties or Down's suffer all of their lives?  It's a bit much to assume someone elses quality of life is going to be less than another's based on your idea of perfection.... or what you, as an adult could or could not bear. I can assure you that those things are not a barrier to enjoying life. Physical perfection isn't a guide to quality of life and happiness.

Are you saying that if a child cannot be *fixed* .....it should be aborted?

I don't know whether or not to say I'm pro-life because I think if a woman's life is at stake she should have the right to terminate a pregnancy even though "I" personally would not. When they told me that I had pre-eclampsia with my last son and that I could die along with my baby that scared me to death, don't get me wrong but no matter what I was going through with that delivery, that was my choice...thank God he is a healthy 6 year old now[:)]....It's not for "me" but in certain medical situations a woman should have a right to choose. It is NOT a form of birth control[:@]

sharainks -> RE: Nicaragua bans all abortions (11/20/2006 3:32:44 AM)

All they have done is move abortions from being safe and legal to unsafe and illegal.  Women who are desparate not to continue a pregnancy will find ways to accomplish that, just like they did in the US pre Roe VS Wade.
