i have been outed more than once. i had a few motivations for not letting the whole world know before, for, honestly i think everyone who knows me, now knows but it is a "don't ask don't tell" thing. The motivations were a combination of: annoyance in not wanting people to hit on me more for all the wrong reasons (ooh look what I was missing), concern in not wanting to scare my nervous nellie relatives, anger that i was not given the chance to tell on my own time, and uncertainty because i did not know early on where i exactly "fit in" in the scene because i knew people in the scene but our worlds didn't mesh, etc. The older i get the more i am content that i am really just an "old fashioned girl looking for an old fashioned guy with a penchant for ropes" and f**k the rest.

I don't advertise, but I don't keep it a secret either. When people at work ask me why I need a certain weekend off, I tell them its because I'm going to the Fetish Fair Fleamarket. They usually don't ask too many questions after that.

There are of course, the inevitable jokes about "We need someone to beat these people into shape. Where's your whip?" but on the other hand, its a professional kitchen and 90 percent of the time everyone is talking about sex anyway. I'm pretty lucky in that cooks in general are fairly freaky people. Goes with the job, I guess.
