Dems Nix Pelosi Choice For Majority Leader

WASHINGTON, Nov. 16, 2006

(CBS/AP) Democrats picked Rep. Steny Hoyer to be House Majority Leader on Thursday, spurning Rep. Nancy Pelosi's handpicked choice moments after unanimously backing her election as speaker when Congress convenes in January.

A Marylander and 25-year veteran of Congress, Hoyer defeated Rep. John Murtha of Pennsylvania by a vote of 149-86.

Hoyer's election to the No. 2 job came just a short time after the Democratic caucus put Pelosi in line to become the first woman to be speaker, a position that's second-in-line of succession to the presidency. It marked a personal triumph for Hoyer.

Earlier, an ebullient Pelosi declared: "We made history, and now we will make progress for the American people."  http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/11/16/politics/main2188664.shtml

Yes....... often, the center is a good thing, I agree.

I'm curious if it was the ABSCAM involvement, or Murtha's anti-war position that cost him the job.  How "unified" are the Dems going to be in the months ahead?  Might be fun to watch.

I just think it is funny.

Rich, talk is already sprouting up about Pelosi's judgment, or lack thereof, because of this. I don't know what the main reason was for Murtha's loss, but whatever it was, the count wasn't even close. One thing's for sure, I hope this isn't how things are going to proceed.

Myself, I'm as encouraged by this, as I was bothered my Representative Pelosi's choice in the first place.

So the Democrats aren't going to walk in step with their leader. So what! Do you really want them to? Isn't that one of the things that got so many Republicans kicked out in the first place - blind support for the President?

Speaker Elect Pelosi's choice, wasn't chosen. She looked very gracious, as did Representative Murtha. I don't think we saw anyone lose ... I think we saw democracy in action.

Evening, caitlyn, and good post. The points you made are valid, so I'll put my thoughts of Democrat warfare and gridlock out of my head.... for now. But I don't want to see Pelosi and Obama and Feingold and Rangel on youTube fist fighting and calling each other "shithead" [8|]. I want results! *bangs shoe on desk like Krushev*

back to my clicking ball bearings...........

Pelosi is liberal...........very liberal (but she will listen) may not understand but she will listen.

Put here out front--click click click--

do not put the equivalent in a majority whip.  While good old nace can be the beacon for liberal democratic politics, the whip runs the laundry list of business.....they will crack hard or soft and hit near or far as it becomes them, I think her mandate is about the asize of Bush's, she has been lamed.................

Agreed. Made me kinda chuffed to be a Democrat actually.

Fast Reply Hijack:

Her next mistake is Alcee Hastings - talk about political paybacks - less than 2 weeks after declaring she'll clean up Congress she's back to business as usual.

She's a liberal politician - the problem is most people are more upset about the "liberal" part when they should be wary of the "politician" part.  Going to be a long two years if these are the types of decisions she plans to back.

toservez -> RE: Pelosi faces first loss (11/17/2006 11:54:19 AM)

Pelosi was painted into a corner by Murtha. He was credited as one of the very main reasons for the Dems turning things around with his talk on Iraq. He was also her "campaign manager" in a couple of previous Dem leadership elections. It would have come off very bad if she had not supported him.

Actual reporting and not the lets start up hot air stuff has that Murtha never had a chance and knew it. He had never been in leadership group in the party and just was not going to leap frog others. Every one, including Murtha( now has his name out there for future leadership positions ) got what they wanted in the end and no big rift what so ever.

Now in the future who knows a united front is not something Dems are known to do...

You're right, it's Hoyer as House Majority Leader, and Clyburn as House Majority Whip.

caitlyn -> RE: Pelosi faces first loss (11/17/2006 4:36:18 PM)

Hoyer is the outgoing Democratic Whip, so it's a bit confusing.

By the way, what kind of yankee name is Steny, anyway? [;)]

Evening, Ron. The Republicans have Rep. John Boehner as Minority leader, and Roy Blunt of Missouri as Minority whip.

I don't like Boehner, just from seeing him do interviews, and I don't know enough about Blunt to say either way. Here's a link that gives some info on each.
