One of the things I feel compelled to do (I suppose being a progressive leads to masochistic behavior on some level) is to watch the right, though I must admit my selflessness has not evolved enough yet for me to actually sit down and watch an entire Fox News program. For what ever reason, I feel the need to keep a close eye on what these folks are doing, saying with the bizarre and endless hope that my vigilance will someday bring some personal insight into what they could possibly be thinking. I can not say that my diligence has proved any real clarity into that last part just yet, however.

I was expecting, and quite looking forward to being smug (nothing wrong with gloating in the privacy of your own home!) and to riding that big blue wave of vindication this Sunday whilst watching the Sunday political talk show line up- Meet the Press, the Chris Matthews Show (see… masochism!) and This Week. I, of course, was sadly disappointed…I was also more than a bit displeased that we of the ‘left’ were not represented on Meet the Press, and even more upset to hear Tim Russert make the announcement that though asked to participate on the program, neither Nancy Pelosi or Harry Reid would come on the show…perhaps they were busy measuring for drapes.

Anyway, I digress, like the true-blue, bleeding heart liberal that I so transparently and unabashedly am.

By the time This Week rolled around I was feeling much less smug and left wondering what had happened to my inflated sense of gleeful vindication from the past week’s events (as well as a being bit sore in the elbow from bombing my TV with a barrage of balled up socks at Tim Russert, Joe Lieberman, John McCain and Chris Matthews in my ritualistic, and I like to think ‘healthy,’ anger management technique in response to my usual indignation for what so frequently passes for journalism and integrity on these shows). To top it all off, I was now going to be subjected to Josh Bolton, spinning, spinning, spinning… and I was out of socks.
So with grim determination, I steeled myself for the assault. And really, it WAS an assault, like something out of a PSYOPS manual. It was the same old tactical same old (keep saying what you want to program into their brains, over and over and over.. and then again, once more, with gusto!). It looks as if all the Bushies have gotten the memo (who knows who wrote it) about putting on a non-aggressive, smiling, “let’s make nice-nice” face, while giving the appearance of bipartisanship and crossing the aisles for the benefit of our nation… which of course, was all they ever really wanted to begin with, right?

I kept hearing one word being used over and over and over. It seems they of the right have got a new buzzword with which to do their ‘programming’ and that word is “fresh!” Everything was fresh… “We want a fresh set of eyes,” “We have always been open to fresh ideas,” “fresh perspective”, fresh, fresh, fresh, fresh, fresh! It was so positively fresh and breezy I wondered if perhaps Josh Bolton was doing a Massengil commercial. By the time I started counting( and I am sure I missed a few ‘freshes’), in just over 5 minutes Mr. Bolton had used the word “fresh” over 12 times. That is very fresh!
So my question is this… while they are lulling us into a new fresh feeling as we are sitting back in sedate smugness, riding our blue wave of vindication… what they are trying to sneak in the back door before it gets slammed shut in the new year? While we are throwing open the windows of freshness to hang the drapes we measured for our new offices, what is happening as we pay no attention to the man behind the curtains that aren’t at all fresh and new?

While distracting us bye saying things we want to hear, and lulling us into a near intoxication upon the richness of hearing things like ‘bipartisanship’ and ‘new ideas’ rolling off the tongues of our ‘vanquished’ foes, did Jeff Bolton in his barrage of rapid fire “freshes” distract the now potentially more dangerous opposition from noticing that he did not, and would not answer the question about using ‘back door’ methods to get John Bolton confirmed? George Stephanopoulos seemed to be enjoying Mr. Bolton’s fresh breeze enough not to push what would normally be a rather blatant, and alarming dodge (Bolton also did not deny that that alternative means would be pursued by the White House to ensure that confirmation).

I just hope we are not all so glutted on the freshness of our 'victory' to miss what might be going on under the guise of the ushering in of a new era. There is only one thing to do… everyone empty out your sock drawer, and watch the right!

LOL Puella........ ahem. Nice to see you .

"Fresh"...... Washington, almost as much as your local high school, has a hard on for buzzwords. "Rock star", "gravitas", and now "fresh". Makes me wanna hurl, but I just ate lunch, and I despise waste.

Hang in there, I think Bolton will get booted soon enough. Then they can bring in someone errrr, fresh.

If the Republicans start calling the democrats shitweasels right after the elections, that is gonna stick as sour grapes in peoples craw, but with George up there beating the drums, they are going to have to come out of the closet again, and rally the eeha for awhile maybe in a couple months and for a year or so, but when the elections start getting play again, they are going to have to rail and chop at the dems again but confiscate any pictures of them hanging out with Bush.

<the above is an insightful and straight to the heart analysis of the political environs at this present time, that was copied from another forum from a meta-physical genious>

Ahem, having said that, most democrats are trying to avoid going on the air with the Republicans and falling prey to the urge to  respond to their smarmy ininveiglings with "Oh, you guys are so fucked!!!!"

So, give it a month or two,  and  I think you will see the scimitars replacing the samovars at the meets.

I just wish they'd start doing what's best for America for once and not cow tow to big business.
Make no misstake about it, big business wants *cheap labor* and what a DEAL it is for them to have millions of illegals in the country who'll work for $6 an hour and (they-big business) don't have to pay for any benefits for them!
They just expect the Taxpayers to pay for all of that stuff so that they can make even more money!
Isn't this called "Corruption?"

Well the first mistake is calling them news shows they are commentary shows they espouse opinions about the news they do not report it.

News is supposed to be Unbiased, and they usually do a decent job of hiding the bias from a coursory examination, and they certainly tread the line ocassionally. But to even consider the commentary to be news is folly to begin with.

Once you get over that you'll find the anger management a little easier. I find it funnythat I find Cris Mathews (On MSNBC btw to be too liberal these days in his commentary while you find im too conservative. He must be actually doing a decent job of being fair then
Damnit hate when that happens.

Thoughtful post, puella, and it strikes a cord, although not perhaps in a way that you intended.

That "smugness" that you talk about, in your own heart is something I wish to address.

It's normal, and nothing wrong with letting a sense of accomplishment, of righteousness, come out every once in a while, but the danger is when it overcomes someone's critical thinking skills about life, politics and people.

And, I'm not really talking about "you" personally, but all people in general, of whatever political beliefs. Your post is just the touchstone, and catalyst.  So ... don't take it personally, ok?

Identifying one side or the other as "all evil" and "bad" isn't helpful in a peaceful political system.  Demonizing the other side prevents compromise, leads to hardened positions and eventually to fanaticism.

Probably, one of the most difficult things for me to do at times, is to step outside of my own preconceptions and beliefs, my own "righteousness" and try to actually see "the other side" in the light that they see themselves.  And to see the similiarities and techniques that one side uses, is often used by the other side as well.

When the people who share many of my common beliefs do something (such as come up with a phrase, or "talking points" or a common message) I think "yeah!".  When the "opponents" do the same thing, my first inclination is to think "conspiracy" and "can't have an original thought, huh?".

But I try to back off, and realize that it's a shared technique, and is used for a reason.

You are obviously an astute and interested political observer.  Most people don't even know about the weekend politcial shows, much less wait for them to see what the talking heads have to say.  Most people, if they see anything at all, get to see a short 10 or 20 second sound bite.  The goal then, is to get the "meme" or talking point out to those people not like yourself.

It's not a Republican or a Democratic technique.  It's a common political (and, more generally, advertising) technique.  Don't think of it as something "just" Republican's do, and condemn them for it, for then you are failing to see when the Democrats do it as well (as do many others). It can lead you down to the point of unthinking righteousness and smugness that can end in fanaticism.

FAST REPLY:

It never ceases to amaze me how politicos (from both parties) act like they just scored a touchdown when they win an election - high fiving, hugging, "end-zone dances".

It's like both parties fail to realize how serious their responsibilities are and they are treating their jobs like a football game.

Don't forget, the Dems won this election and all the dancing they are doing is for themselves - they haven't done anything for us yet.  The Repubs did the same thing in 1994, they scored for themselves, they balanced the budget, cut some taxes, and then ...

Clinton did the same thing in 1990, weeee ... we won.  Do a few noticable things, then ...

Both parties do it, have done it, and don't have much incentive to not continue in the future.  Even in the minority, the politicos in Washington are still doing very well for themselves, but the rest of us have to kick and scratch every day.

I expect to see the Dems do a few noticable things over the next few months (the election is still newsworthy and we're all watching), then I expect them to slack off just like both parties have done as far back as I can remember.

What's to be smug about?  Go out and fix the country now, and do all you have promised you'll do ("you" being used generally).

Fresh is not a new word to politics.  It was used when Clinton came to office, then Bush, etc. People like the word "fresh."  It is effective.  It paints a picture in the mind of goodness, crispness, healthy...well, fresh!

So the Dems won.  Great.  But that's not good enough, now we need to criticize how the Reps respond to it?  Is that because they're not sniveling and whining about it, thus not feeding ones need to feel smug?

And if the Reps won...they'd be criticizing how the Dems responded.  Probably for the same reason.

Just fix the damn country!
