One of the things I feel compelled to do (I suppose being a progressive leads to masochistic behavior on some level) is to watch the right, though I must admit my selflessness has not evolved enough yet for me to actually sit down and watch an entire Fox News program. For what ever reason, I feel the need to keep a close eye on what these folks are doing, saying with the bizarre and endless hope that my vigilance will someday bring some personal insight into what they could possibly be thinking. I can not say that my diligence has proved any real clarity into that last part just yet, however. I was expecting, and quite looking forward to being smug (nothing wrong with gloating in the privacy of your own home!) and to riding that big blue wave of vindication this Sunday whilst watching the Sunday political talk show line up- Meet the Press, the Chris Matthews Show (see… masochism!) and This Week. I, of course, was sadly disappointed…I was also more than a bit displeased that we of the ‘left’ were not represented on Meet the Press, and even more upset to hear Tim Russert make the announcement that though asked to participate on the program, neither Nancy Pelosi or Harry Reid would come on the show…perhaps they were busy measuring for drapes. Anyway, I digress, like the true-blue, bleeding heart liberal that I so transparently and unabashedly am. By the time This Week rolled around I was feeling much less smug and left wondering what had happened to my inflated sense of gleeful vindication from the past week’s events (as well as a being bit sore in the elbow from bombing my TV with a barrage of balled up socks at Tim Russert, Joe Lieberman, John McCain and Chris Matthews in my ritualistic, and I like to think ‘healthy,’ anger management technique in response to my usual indignation for what so frequently passes for journalism and integrity on these shows). To top it all off, I was now going to be subjected to Josh Bolton, spinning, spinning, spinning… and I was out of socks. So with grim determination, I steeled myself for the assault. And really, it WAS an assault, like something out of a PSYOPS manual. It was the same old tactical same old (keep saying what you want to program into their brains, over and over and over.. and then again, once more, with gusto!). It looks as if all the Bushies have gotten the memo (who knows who wrote it) about putting on a non-aggressive, smiling, “let’s make nice-nice” face, while giving the appearance of bipartisanship and crossing the aisles for the benefit of our nation… which of course, was all they ever really wanted to begin with, right? I kept hearing one word being used over and over and over. It seems they of the right have got a new buzzword with which to do their ‘programming’ and that word is “fresh!” Everything was fresh… “We want a fresh set of eyes,” “We have always been open to fresh ideas,” “fresh perspective”, fresh, fresh, fresh, fresh, fresh! It was so positively fresh and breezy I wondered if perhaps Josh Bolton was doing a Massengil commercial. By the time I started counting( and I am sure I missed a few ‘freshes’), in just over 5 minutes Mr. Bolton had used the word “fresh” over 12 times. That is very fresh! So my question is this… while they are lulling us into a new fresh feeling as we are sitting back in sedate smugness, riding our blue wave of vindication… what they are trying to sneak in the back door before it gets slammed shut in the new year? While we are throwing open the windows of freshness to hang the drapes we measured for our new offices, what is happening as we pay no attention to the man behind the curtains that aren’t at all fresh and new? While distracting us bye saying things we want to hear, and lulling us into a near intoxication upon the richness of hearing things like ‘bipartisanship’ and ‘new ideas’ rolling off the tongues of our ‘vanquished’ foes, did Jeff Bolton in his barrage of rapid fire “freshes” distract the now potentially more dangerous opposition from noticing that he did not, and would not answer the question about using ‘back door’ methods to get John Bolton confirmed? George Stephanopoulos seemed to be enjoying Mr. Bolton’s fresh breeze enough not to push what would normally be a rather blatant, and alarming dodge (Bolton also did not deny that that alternative means would be pursued by the White House to ensure that confirmation). I just hope we are not all so glutted on the freshness of our 'victory' to miss what might be going on under the guise of the ushering in of a new era. There is only one thing to do… everyone empty out your sock drawer, and watch the right!
