Sometimes i can't help but wonder: How do formally trained tech people think people learned computers before the formal training was available? Hmm?  It reminds me of that well known debate of "What came first? The chicken, or the egg?".


My comment was not born out of arrogance and if you took it that way then I am sorry. The fact is that I started learning this stuff on my own by pretty much trial and error on my own computer. It was only until someone brought me a machine that wasn't working and I fixed it that I realized that I have a natural interest and aptitude for doing this sort of work.

My formal training such as it is, came much later after years of fixing stuff. I really went to school to find out why what I was doing was working and what the names of things were. I also learned some networking, but I am not as proficient in that as I would like to be.

I am well aware of the school of hard knocks and I am also aware that formal schooling does not make someone good at what they do, they just have a piece of paper that they can wave around mostly, but it is the EXPERIENCE that really counts. Getting your hands in there and solving problems... there is no better learning tool. So, do not think that I am knocking those that do not have a piece of paper... frankly I learned more on my own than I did from school... and I am $13,000 lighter for the experience.

Status: offline 		I have a cheap effective and always works method  to fix my computer keep your operating systems, program disks and hardware drivers in a secure place. back up anything you can't do without onto floppy or CDRW.
Format c:, you now have a new clean computer reinstall everything.  There simply are some things even the best geek can't remove. And a registry problem how do you fix that?

Sure, this method will work just fine... but why go through all of that crap when it really isn't needed. I believe that you fix the system that you have and in the process you learn a little bit about how to keep what you have running smoothly.

Windows backs up the registry for you, but I never rely on that for many reasons. I back up my registry to disk (most of the time my USB drive) and if ever the registry gets corrupted, then I am safe. Windows 2000 and higher has a recovery feature that if you set regular restore points, the system can recover quite nicely from most errors. Also, there are great tools for cleaning, compacting and backing up the registry. Do a little reading and find one that works for you.

I hope it lives to the once again Microsoft hype that We alway get when Bill decides to pass us off one of his so called idea's i.e. Look at Xerox for the original window idea that He and Jobs had a chance to experience. Yes Jobs stoled the idea first but Gates stoled it from him. I agree the mack OS has been and will continue to be better then Windows. But unfortunate Due to Billions stolen by Gates We are all on P.C. Anyways you are right about before the net I remember the very fast 300 bods per sec Modem  That dazzled me at the time. Is US Robotics still around?? Ha actually my first build was the wonderful 386 Also had a apple IIe comodore 64 And a Atari ST. Geez those were the days. I like to see a so called tech today configure the setting that we had to back then and cross our fingers and pray the the other end match up correctly.

i agree with what Gauge replied to your post.

i save the option of formatting as a last resort.

Since owning my first computer in '99 , i have formatted a total of three times. Once on that first pc to upgrade from WinMe to Win 2000. The second was on this pc which i had custom built to my needs because my needs had outgrown the first. The third was when i upgraded from Win 2000 to XP on this PC.

i don't format. i repair, and fix. i refuse to format until i run out of options for fixing and repairing.
This is exactly how i have learned anything that i know about computers.
It works for me. Your mileage may vary.

i have a lot of programs installed that i NEED on my PC which support what i do online (html from scratch, web site design and site maintenance ... and graphic design). Each of those programs has a ton of settings, and plug ins, and preferences, and directory paths which i have no choice but to set up manually .... which takes a big chunk of my time to do. Then there are my firewall settings .... and my internet options. i also have a ton of URLs stored as bookmarks which i do know how to install manually ..... but again, it takes additional time to do that. Then i have a printer and a flatbed scanner ... each which require i download patches and updated drivers for ....... and i use a
wireless digipen/tablet/pad and mouse set ... software needs installing for that .... download new drivers for that too ............... etc ect ect...................
The last time i formatted it was MONTHS before my PC was set up exactly the way i need and want it to be.

Edited to add:
To answer your query .....You can fix the registry one of two ways :
1. Install and run a Registry Repair Program.
2. If you know how to, repair it manually.
(If there are any other ways .... they are beyond my knowledge.)

Status: offline 		System Mechanic is a registry cleaner, a temp internet file cleaner and will clean 0 lenght an duplicate files tho I never screw with the dup ones. It'll also back up your registry and has an undue feature case ya fuck up in the process of something.
