Spitfiregrrl -> gasoline mishaps... (11/7/2006 10:21:18 PM)

Ok this is majorly random. I just happened to be putting gas in my car when I was a tad bit intoxicated and it overflowed and spilled all over my clothes well...I stuck my clothes in my hamper now they all smell. So I washed them and to my dismay it did not take the gasoline out... but only made my wash machine smell. So what is the solution to this problem? I don't want to have to throw all my clothes out because of it. If anyone could give me a suggestion on this I would be very very happy. Thanks!

Is this a new kink?

No not at all, lol.   I guess maybe some people could think of it as a kink though. What do you think?

Dear OP.  Believe it or not, people swear by "Classic Coke" in the wash.  Also, apparently, vinegar.

BUT BE CAREFUL:  Dried gasoline is VERY flammable.  DO NOT PUT THESE CLOTHES IN THE DRYER IF THERE IS A HINT OF GASOLINE ON THEM.  You could blow it up, and cause a serious fire.  No joke.

What am I now?  Hints from effing Heloise?

E.

Thats exactly what my friend told me. Brilliant! Thank you for the advice. Right now I'm soaking them with dawn soap then getting some like orange glow stuff then vinegar. This a huge ordeal grrrrrrrrr. I love the smell of gasoline but not this much, lol. Yeah I heard not to put gasoline infested clothes in the dryer thanks for the warning.

I hope someone else was driving.

Hang them outside until the gasoline evaporates. Do not put them into a tight ball for fear of spontaneous combustion. No help on the washer, sorry.

If it were me, I'd throw them out if hanging them in the fresh air for a couple of days didn't do it.

Moloch -> RE: gasoline mishaps... (11/8/2006 3:22:38 PM)

Just wash it again it should come out, I managed to get gasoline all over my clothing more then once, just give it time to evaporate then wash it.

i once dated a woman who worked at a filling station (not the self-serve variety) and i always got heavily turned on when i caught her after work before her shower

there was something about the smell, and i'm sure there is a name for all this

There is hope for the washer, if you can get your hands on a bunch of methyl alcohol. I'm pretty sure one of the brands of "Dry gas" contains it, but that would be expensive. Methyl alcohol seems to supply like a "bridge" so water can dissolve in gas.

I would not recommend mixing the alcohol with anything like bleach or detergent. In fact is you can get a bunch of it, wash everything affected in it. In fact it would be good to throw some in during the spin cycle. This will make it spray on the walls of the outer tub. Afterwards run it a few times on full capacity, but empty, except maybe for the smelly clothes. I hope everything affected can stand hot water, it will work better.

You think you got it bad with gasoline ? try used transmission fluid. Motor oil is worse as well.

If you can't get your hands on copious amounts of methyl or vinegar, dry run the machine on high level full hot numerous times. It will clear eventually.

And let this be a lesson to you, get fuel on the way TO the bar. You could get busted if they see you doing this at a well lit gas station. My last DUI was $2,300 and that was a fantastic deal, the fix was in.

Thanks for the advice everyone. My clothes still smell like gasoline. So far I've tried vinegar and dish soap and some frebreeze odor remover. I'm persistent and will not give up in the persuit of getting the pesky gasoline out of my clothes. As for the driving while semi intoxicated. I know the consquences of my actions and am going to make some changes on that. So enough said on that. Thanks again!

slavejali -> RE: gasoline mishaps... (11/9/2006 3:42:33 AM)

Well, sorry but this is after the fact information...but you shoulda just hung the clothes out in the sun to allow the intial vapours to evaporate, then handwashed in strong detergent.....

Umm...perhaps you could try that process again.....or after hanging them out for awhile send all clothes off to dry-cleaner.

swtnsparkling -> RE: gasoline mishaps... (11/9/2006 3:51:00 AM)

Try washing them in Lestoil
usualy found in the floor cleaner section
and No I am not kidding

PPOTiger -> RE: gasoline mishaps... (11/9/2006 4:14:50 AM)

LMAO.......Sounds like something I would do.

Best solution I can think of is to throw them away and buy new ones................

Wishing  you luck.[:)]

pahunkboy -> RE: gasoline mishaps... (11/9/2006 4:44:12 AM)

I pumped gas for 7 years.  pump #4 would spill from time to time. you must be using a budget brand soap.

when i have had super dirty garments- ill hang on the clothes line for a week during rain. as a prewash.....
