Honestly, I have worked with disturbed and violent children....and with disturbed and violent adults. Yup there have been occasions where you have to get right into the middle of the mix.

Again... tell me how you handle those violent children ?    How do you take the scissors away from those children ?    You are the expert, yes ?   So tell me .. with all your wordly training .. how you disarm a 5 yoa mentally disturbed child lunging with scissors ?

And when you've gotten in the middle of the mix... you escaped unharmed how ?   how many others did it take to assist you ?

Well first of all....there was no lunging child with scissors as you say. If you look up the story you will find that the child had a piece of broken glass. At the moment he was tazed, he was not lunging at anyone...he was trying to cut his own thigh.

But regardless....glass, scissors, lunging or not...it doesn't really matter. I'm considerably larger than a 5 year old...my legs are far longer....and so are my arms. Most people can figure out that simply by placing a hand on top of a 5 year olds head their arms and legs become ineffective weapons as they can't reach your strike zones.

There were 7 adults present that day. You mean to tell me you can't see where one person could come from behind a child and wrap their arms around his...rendering their arms useless? Wrap a leg over theirs and now their legs are useless too. Another of the adults couldn't then take the glass from the child's hand? It's a common hold used to subdue an out of control, disturbed child. Do they fight against it and resist? Sure they do. Fortunately though, most adults are stronger and have more endurance than a small child. After a short time of being immobilized in that manner they tire and realize the situation is futile...and they stop.

Even if the adults would have simply said "Give that to me" and followed it up with an immediate grab their arm and physically wrestle it out of their hand....the danger of being cut would be minimal, unless at some point 5 year olds have become incredibly more fast and accurate than your average adult and no one sent me the memo. So....you get a cut....you're a big girl, you can take it. Put a band-aid on it....or get a stitch. At least you end up with a disarmed 5 year old that didn't have to be tazed.

If your job is to deal with the violent and disturbed, you have to assume there is some risk involved and sometimes, you might just get hurt. For many years I worked at an inner city, inpatient drug treatment program. Our clients were not white collar professionals who were tipping a few too many glasses or taking too many prescription meds. They were hard core street folk...primarily crack addicted. I worked second shift...the shift when most of the planned activities of the day were done and they were on "free time". At least two days a week I was the only staff member on duty to supervise 16. I didn't have the cops to fall back on if something went awry for the most part. Calling cops in was a complicated process because of confidentiality laws. (although I have to say cops came there regularly because they knew that "so and so" was there....only to be turned away at the door, which seemed to frustrate them greatly).

If something happened....and it often did....I had to deal with it. Most times without having to get physically involved. Weapons were usually not an issue because we conducted very thorough searches...but you would be amazed at what can be used for a weapon. On one occasion I had one client with a pot of freshly brewed coffee in one hand and another client pinned to the wall with the other. Frequently clients would get into scrapes with one another....something about having to deal with life drug free tends to make those addicted a bit short fused. It was my job to deal with it though. Did I take a few blows when I did have to jump in the middle? Sure I did. But it was a risk that I knew came with the position and one that I agreed to take when I signed on.

Just read your own posts and should understand why people don't get along with law enforcement.

You're arguing over proper classification of the crime. Does that really matter? The fact is some came in his house took his stuff, and the cops didn't do shit. And your answer is why didn't you call them up and complain? LOL. Isn't that their job. Why should you have to force them to do their job. I was burglarized when I was a kid and you know what they did nothing to. Stole my Nintendo, bastards. Cops came looked all grumpy that they were even called, and left.  LOL, I respect that.

Good grief.

Amen...they didn't do anything....I mean I would have even been satisfied if they told me come to the station and we will talk to you, or even if they called and told me "we have no leads we are trying as hard as we can"...but no. The thing is that I did call several times to speak to the "detective" in charge, who would never return my calls....all in all? I was left wondering why did we call the cops...was a waste of time really.
It is the worst when tieves break in like that, I didn't sleep for three days...and then with my roomate we had to call out to each other every time one of us got home, or we would be ready to attack with a baseball bat....seems funny now, but we were at wits end at the time. I am sorry they took your Nintendo, theft is theft.

Thanks, LOL, they stole other stuff to, but that was only thing they took of mine. What pissed me off was I used watch my sisters kids and her friends kids, and I hated it just to get to the money to buy the thing. 100 and something dollars which was more money than I had saved ever at the time. And the kicker is we know with 99% certainty who it was, and told them still nothing. I was about twelveish I guess not much a person can do to a guy that has been in prison about 4 times and was ripped, when you are twelve. Probably why the police didn't want to do anything.

Oh well, best to not think about it, it still pisses me off to this day.

Cops deserve our respect ... they have a very difficult job.

One of the reasons I think many of us struggle with this issue, is that the answer to any act of brutality, seems to be that it's only a few bad apples, followed by a thin blue line defending that apple.

If it's only a few ... alright then. So, what do we have to do to get rid of those few ... call a cop?
