There are over four million desperately poor people in that country, largely thanks to US interference.

Go democracy.

USA - please stop helping the rest of us run our countries.

Zensee, they probably would have been "desperately poor" with or without the U.S.
There's a lot to be said for isolationism.

Are you suggesting that the Nicaraguan people are too stupid to choose, in a democratic fashion, who shall govern their country?
You seem not to be aware of the sort of person Anastasio Samoza was...perhaps a little research would be in order ...isn't this the man who murdered his opponants when he invited them to a peace conference.

thompson, not at all....what I am saying is that the masses in any one country that lacks education and where most of the people are to young to remember, may not have all the information needed at election time. I am not supporting Somoza, I m just saying that Daniel Ortega is a murderous thug just as well, and not a "democratic" leader per se....overthrowing a dictatorship does not make the new leader a democrat automatically...case in point would be Castro after overthrowing Batista. I have read up on Somoza's murderous ways and his extreme nepotism and corruption, no need to re-read it....but perhaps you should brush up a bit on Mr. Ortega's past as well as his short stint in government from 1985-1990? My point is simple, both are bad, I am criticizing Ortega because Batista is not running in that presidential election (he is dead).

MasterKalif:
I am sorry I misunderstood you...it is clear now that you do not think the Nicaraguan people are stupid just ignorant and childish.  Is it really true that over half of the people in Nicaragua are under 25 years old?  I was there a few years ago and that was not the impression I got.
You mentioned Cuba and Castro as an example of how those who overthrow dictators are not necessarily democratic.  Cuba has more democracy today than it has had since Columbus got here.  The cubans in Cuba love Castro.  The only cubans who do not like him are the followers of Batista who live in the U.S.
Who exactly are these thousands of people Ortega has murdered....wer'nt they the same thugs the U.S. sent into that country to destroy Ortega?
BTW:  Did you know that Anastasio Samoza was a Colonel in the USMC?

Popeye:
No ...they are desperately poor because of U.S. policy...If you would read the book I sugested to you perhaps it would cause you to rethink your position on forign aid.
You and I agree on ending forign aid but for different reasons.  The only beneficiary of forign aid is U.S. business not the country to whom it is being "given"

Nicaragua's Ortega vows close U.S. ties

By TRACI CARL, Associated Press Writer1 hour, 17 minutes ago

Daniel Ortega returns to Nicaragua's presidency a shadow of the fiery revolutionary who in Cold War times vowed an endless fight against a U.S. government determined to overthrow him.

Balding, weakened by heart trouble and often appearing almost docile, he now preaches reconciliation and stability, and promises to maintain close ties with the U.S. and the veterans of the Contra army it trained and armed against him.

He has traded his wartime military fatigues for a white shirt and jeans. His guide, he says, is God, not Karl Marx.

"the cubans in Cuba love Castro".....IF that was true why would he put journalists and teachers in jail for signing a petetion asking for an elected Government?   That's democracy?  Being jailed for signing a petition?

How; for the love of God, did this go from Castro to to democracy.....
And by the way, Castro has done a damn fine job keeping Americans off his ass
Regardless of his shortcomings
