Why am I not surprised. Desparate times call for desparate measures.

WHY am I not suprised? The Fish Stinks from the Head Down. Our Government has become corrupted. They know that young people aren't willing to die for a lie! When WWI and WWII happened People were drafted but willing to go because they knew it was about survival of the AMERICAN way of life.

Now there is no draft and so the only way they can get meat for the grinder is to lie!

DommeChains -> RE: Recruiters and the lies they tell (11/4/2006 6:46:10 AM)

Whenever I see a recruiting station I remember Goldie Hawn in Private Benjamin saying to a drill instructor  "...I joined the one with the condos..." when she was standing inspection.

Having been in the military myself you betcha they will tell you anything to get those numbers.  Never forget the nickname GI stands for government issue and means you belong to the military when you are active duty and they will put you and use however they chose.

This is not meant as a slam against the military but the primary function of an army is fighting.  Anyone who believes it to be something else is in for a rude awakening.

ZenrageTheKeeper -> RE: Recruiters and the lies they tell (11/4/2006 6:50:49 AM)

Now to help slumping recruitment numbers, the army has relaxed its standard of not letting in any white supremacists.

The next Timothy McVeigh is being trained as we speak.

Ava82 -> RE: Recruiters and the lies they tell (11/4/2006 6:52:58 AM)

There was a feature on the local news here a few years ago about them doing the same thing.  I'm sure you can catch recruiters all over the country doing it.

Zensee -> RE: Recruiters and the lies they tell (11/4/2006 7:05:48 AM)

I used to have a pair of boxer shorts that said "Join the Army. Travel to exotic lands,  meet new people and kill them." 0

Ummmm, Timothy McVeigh was able to enlist just fine under the old rules.  I think the change you are looking at is the one about pre-existing tattoos.  It includes "gang" symbols of most persuasions.

Recruiters lying more than politicians is certainly not new.  One of the cadence calls that stuck in my head from 20 years ago ran,
"Rainbow, rainbow (a new arrival still in civilian clothes) don't be blue, our recruiter screwed us too."

CrazyC -> RE: Recruiters and the lies they tell (11/4/2006 7:26:16 AM)

You know the saying, "there is nothing new under the sun." Well it is true. i remember when i enlisted they were promicing all sorts of gift and money for enlistment, and that was during "peace time." "Peace time" itself was a joke which many of my Army, and Marine friends have told me. i know my sisters who are both enlisting in the guard were told they would never have to worry about being in war. i almost choked on my coffee when they told me that. Reallity is...we are at war and that means they'll send anyone when it is your time.

KenDckey -> RE: Recruiters and the lies they tell (11/4/2006 7:50:43 AM)

I personally find this tactic repugnant and discraseful and believe that those individual recruiters should be brught up on Charges.   Not an Article 15 (non-juducial) but courts martial.   I also believe that they voided the ontract of those they enlisted and they should be given the choice of an honerable discharge or continued service.

That jody is a gem, it'll be around long after we're gone.  As for the article LotusSong posted the link to, sadly I can say the same thing about asshat recruiters   Near as I can tell, many if not most recruiters (especially Army recruiters) disregard proper conduct because of a belief far up in the ranks that the ends justify the means or simply not considering anyone from a middle class background or lower to be a worthwhile human being.  I could not disagree more.

Militaries have lied as it has suited them since the dawn of civilization.  The difference today is the hypocrisy of pretending to toe the line and the claims of operating openly and truthfully.  I joined knowing that I was just a sales figure to my recruiter, a walking ASVAB score.  Of course, I was also older than my first two TI's (Training Instructors) by three years.  Sadly, so were my knees and I spent four months in Basic instead of the six weeks it was supposed to take.  During that time I met many young men and women who should never have been cleared to be sent to a summer camp, much less the military.

I was an old man of 25 when I joined the Air Force, I knew the risks and what I was walking into a lot better than the 18 year old kids they target in high school.  I accept being injured in Basic, shit happens and I just had a dodgy knee that neither I nor the docs at the MEPS station could have known about without an Xray or MRI.  I do have some serious problems with what happened after I was injured and that is why I will never recommend anyone ever joining the military under any circumstance I can think of.  I got through Basic anyway when I was returned to training despite continuing to deteriorate and completed my enlistment but I should have had surgery at Wilford Hall or back home and been medically discharged from Basic.

There is a wide spectrum of good and bad when it comes to recruiters.  I believe most of it is bullshit that recruiters are made to do by those above them but they willingly execute it which makes them just as guilty.  I don't have much sympathy for the recruits who join under the mistaken impression that they can get away with acting irresponsibly, immaturely, stupid enough to pop positive on the drug test and other idiocy.  I do have a good deal of empathy for the people who are now permanently disabled when they should have been screened out by anyone with a brain and a pair of eyes.  I hope that someone has reserved a special spot in hell for the assholes who cleared the 18 to 19 year old kids who I had to get medical attention for when I found them in the latrine after attempting suicide or kids I met who will never walk again without crutches.  Allowing them through was callous negligence at best and evil at worst.

That being said, there are some of the finest examples of human beings I have ever met in the armed services are the saints who came back from retirement to volunteer as unpaid support staff after giving 20+ years to their country.  I learned more about service and sacrifice from a few years working alongside them than I could have imagined learning in the scene; I can honestly say I am a better man and a better dominant because of what I learned from their example.

Sincerely,

Joe

I thought everything my recruiter told me was a lie...turned out I was wrong.

Funny, I volunteered to go to Vietnam when I was in Q.M. "A" school in Newport, R.I. but I was put on a Fleet Oiler and sent to the Mediterainian and the Middle East with the Sixth Fleet instead.
The only thing my recruiter said was "sign here, here, here and here."
How I got in the Navy was one day I said to my father; "Dad, I was thinking about joining the Navy."
He said; "Get in the car."
I said; "Where we going?"
He said; "Get in the car and shut up!"
Fifteen minutes later we were at the Navy Recruiter's office in Medford, Mass.
It happenned that fast.

MasterKalif -> RE: Recruiters and the lies they tell (11/8/2006 7:29:41 PM)

Thats cool I go to college in Newport, RI popeye1250....in any case going back to the topic...I think it is sad that young people are being lied to in that way....because if they will be doing such a sacrifice and even die in the process, at least they should know what they are up against.[:(]
