Find a pattern.

First time? Use very thin leather such as 16th of an inch.

Listen to the guy at the leather shop. You're gonna need tools, studs, backing, and such.

Start off with simplicity. Once you get the basics, you can think fancy for future corsets.

Well made corsets need to be custom made from scratch or well fitted from a standard patter and they are not for the beginning seamstress, in my opinion (I'm a seamstress). If you want to try something corest-like, go to a fabric store and look through the costume section of the pattern books. I don't recommend the period piece items for beginners...they are very exact.

However, if you feel you can make a fitted, period, from scratch corset, here's some places to start. Remember to make a trial corset from heavy canvas before you do the real thing.
Victorian Corset from scratch
Authentic Civil War Corset (Simplicity Pattern)
Georgian

I found all of the above simply seaching google for corset patterns.

Make practice ones out of somthing -other- than leather. Corsets are hard t make and leather is hard to work with. Doing both is -very- difficult. Make practice peices to get your pattern right, and get used to fitting things -before- you try it with leather.

Also, like Fangs said, go for garment-weight leather and use a lining layer of something sturdy like cotton duck.

Do keep in mind that most corsets are designed to be made of woven fabric - thin leather is going to have more stretch than the fabrics used for most corsetmaking, and how much will depend a *lot* on what leather you choose.

Keep also in mind that for sewing fabrics, more stitches per inch makes for a stronger seam.  When sewing leather, a high stitch per inch rate makes for perforated, weak leather.

Good luck - I suspect that you'll need it.

Also are you sure that your sewing machine can handle sewing not only the leather but the backing that will be needed as well. Most sewing machines can not do such a thing. Making a leather corset as your first garment is a recipe for disaster. Surprised noone has flat out said that yet.

Top marks for ambition!  I hope it turns out well.

Myself...I'm a firm believer in contracting something like this out.  [:D]
